We are loaded with talent finally in the O-Line pipeline. That plus a really good O-Line coach and a S&C program that builds strength while shucking fat, means the old days when Notre Dame just confidently re-loaded there every year, and a consistent stream of bigs traipsed to the pros, are back.
Even if Cave, Golic, ZMart, AND Watt all leave after this year, adding five to replace four is an improvement. That following year line-up should look like Lombard and NMart anchoring, with Hegarty in the middle. Hopefully we won't REALLY have to replace ZMart AND Watt both, but if we do, we'll have Prestwood and Ronnie Stanley and Mark Harrell coming, if Hanratty, Heggie, or Carrico don't rise up, which one or more could. That's nine vets, plus this class' Five Fingers of Doom as frosh. O-Line coaches don't like to waste eligibility of Frosh linemen, but Montelus could be an exception ... or Bivin, or Elmer. [I'm leaving the taller slimmer guys out for a year of getting muscle-mean].
My actual bet for the year after next is Prestwood/ Watt/ Hegarty/ NMart/ Lombard ... not bad for losing two NFLers in Cave and ZMart.
In another year after that, Montelus, Stanley, Elmer et al will be battling it out for Lombard's and Watt's old jobs as they go to the League. And so it will go for as far as we can see. IF we stick with Kelly and Hiestand.
