NY loaded the bases in the first inning and didn't score.

In the bottom of the first A's slammed 3 doubles of Severino for 4 runs. Severino didn't finish 3 innings. Earliest exit for the former NY ace.

Sanchez went deep in the 7th to avoid a shutout. Yanks had 5 hits.

Final A's 8-2

Updated for tonight's #23 by Torres

Updated for tonight's #23 by Torres

Per NY Post

Before this season the Yankees had never had two rookies reach 15 homers in the same season. Now, Miguel Andujar has 23 and Gleyber Torres 23.

That has helped them accumulate 58 rookie homers in all as a team. The team record is 60 set last year when Aaron Judge accounted for 52 of them. The major league record is 112 by the 2006 Marlins. Both the 2017 Yankees and the 2006 Marlins were managed by Joe Girardi.

Romine makes own wild-card case with big HR in Yankees win
By George A. King III September 9, 2018

SEATTLE — Austin Romine helped the Yankees inch closer to the AL wild-card game Saturday night that many believe he should be the starting catcher in over Gary Sanchez.

Romine’s opposite-field solo homer to right field off Nick Vincent with the score tied in the seventh inning helped lift the Yankees to a 4-2 win over the Mariners in front of 38,733 at Safeco Field.

The victory kept the Yankees 3 ½ games ahead of the A’s in the chase for the top wild-card spot that guarantees the winner of playing the one-and-done contest at home.

Coupled with the Red Sox losing to the Astros, the Yankees moved to 7 ½ games of the AL East leaders with 20 to play, which means something to those who believe in miracles.

Gleyber Torres, who went 2-for-3, drove in the final run with a sacrifice fly to right in the ninth that scored Tyler Wade with an insurance run.

Zach Britton worked a clean seventh and David Robertson struck out three in the eighth on a cut fastball, slider and curveball.

Dellin Betances gave up a leadoff double to Mitch Haniger in the ninth before striking out Jean Segura. Betances then hit Robinson Cano in the left foot and forced Cano out of the game.

That brought Nelson Cruz (34 homers) to the plate and he walked to load the bases for Denard Span. Betances got ahead, 1-2 and struck Span out with a 98-mph fastball. Kyle Seager was next and he struck out on a 1-2 slider. It was Betances’third save.

The cry for Romine over Sanchez in the wild-card game is real because Romine is the better defender, and in a game with such finality it would be crushing to lose due to a passed ball or a wild pitch that isn’t blocked. Entering Saturday’s action, Sanchez was tied for the MLB lead in passed balls with 13 and was behind the plate for 37 wild pitches.

After two subpar starts in which Lance Lynn gave up nine earned runs and 16 hits in 9 ¹/₃ innings the right-hander limited the Mariners to two runs and three hits in six innings and is 2-2 in eight games (seven starts) with the Yankees.

Andrew McCutchen opened the game with a home run off Felix Hernandez who left in fifth inning with a tight right hamstring. Giancarlo Stanton, who has one hit in the last 28 at-bats, drove a run in with a sacrifice fly in fifth that gave the Yankees a 2-1 lead.

The Mariners went 0-for-2 with runners in scoring position in the first inning when they failed to score. Four frames later Dee Gordon, the No. 9 hitter, dropped a two-out, opposite-field single into shallow left field that scored former Yankee prospect Ben Gamel from second and tied the score, 2-2.

With Haniger at the plate, Gordon attempted to swipe second and was thrown out by Romine to end the inning.

Hernandez left the game in the fifth inning with what looked like a leg injury after walking McCutchen with Brett Gardner on second and no outs. Gardner opened the inning with a four-pitch walk.

Right-hander Shawn Armstrong replaced Hernandez and watched Gardner and McCutchen advance a base each when catcher Mike Zunino was charged with a passed ball with Stanton at the plate.

Stanton, who was in a 3-for-27 slide, lofted a fly to right that plated Gardner for a 2-1 lead and advanced McCutchen to third. Aaron Hicks smoked a liner to the left side that was caught by shortstop Jean Segura and doubled off McCutchen for the inning’s final out.

Zunino started the game hitting .189 and 18 homers, tied the score, 1-1, with a towering solo home run to center field leading off the third inning against Lynn.

Hernandez’ fourth pitch of the game was tucked inside the left-field foul pole by McCutchen. It was McCutchen’s second homer as a Yankee and second in as many games.

Stanton and Andujar back to back doubles gave NY a 1-0 lead in the first. CC got the first 2 batters out in the bottom of the inning and the M's hit 4 consecutive singles for 2-1 lead.

CC's given up 5 singles and a BB on 39 pitches though 2 innings.

CC did his job but the offense and bullpen didn't do theirs. NY loaded the bases on 3 consecutive singles with no outs and ended up with one run via a base on balls to McCutchen to tie the game. Stayed tied until Betances came in to pitch the 8th. Walked the leadoff hitter on 4 pitches. Hanigar promptly stole second. Advanced to third on a sac and scored on a ball hit to short. Throw home was wide right. Ball game.

Happ has been a great get by Cashman. Got his 6th win tonight in 8 starts. Scattered 6 hits over 6 innings allowing no runs and dropping ERA to 2.70.

Yankee bats came alive, 11 hits, a 6 run inning and back to back to back RBI doubles by the meat of the order. A booming HR by Sanchez, 1 of his 3 hits.

Anybody want the AL Wild Card?

Anybody want the AL Wild Card?

Yanks lost 2 nights in a row to the lowly Twins. NY didn't lose tonight as they didn't play. The A's played the Orioles and lost losing a 1/2 game to NY and now down 2 in the Loss Column.

NY opens a 3 game set at home with Toronto Friday. Tanaka is up next, then CC on Saturday, and Lynn Sunday. The A's will be at Tampa. Tuesday Happ faces BoSox at the Stadium. Severino on Wednesday and Tanaka Thursday. Baltimore is up next with 3 games at the Stadium. Then NY goes to Tampa for 3 games and then on to Fenway for the last 3.

With 6 games against the BoSox I suspect NY lost it in Minnesota. They had a cushion and gave it away.

The lack of Judge and Gregorius is the excuse for the lack of offense but the blame goes around.

Hicks 1 for 20 (.050)
McCutchen 5 for 33 (.152) since being acquired.
Stanton 5 for 42 (.119)
Sanchez 6 for 35 (.171)

Last 7 Games
Hicks 3 for 25, 0 HRs
McCutchen 4 for 20, 2 Hrs
Stanton 3 for 25, 0 HRs
Sanchez 5 for 24, 2 HRs

Judge coming back isn't going to fix those bats.

CC lasted 50 pitches, didn't make it through the 3rd trailing 5-0

Yanks battled back with 4 HRs including a Andujar grand slam but Kanhle gave up 3 more runs and NY scored no more. Final Jays 8 NY 8.

Oakland was kind enough to lose as well. NY Wild Card Lead stays at 1.5.

Lynn pitches tomorrow.

Judge did not play today.

Chapman worked out in the bullpen. May be back next week.

Sheffield may be promoted to the big club. Scranton finished their season.

Lynn pitched his best in over a month allowing 1 run through 5. Robertson allowed only a BB through 2 innings of shutout ball. Then Betances gave away the store allowing 5 hits to 6 consecutive batters and gaining BS #3 and Loss #6. NY had a total of 6 hits as Judge's place on the bench did not impact the decision.

Oakland apparently playing for the BoSox to open the back door lost again to keep the Wild Card at 1.5.

Horrible defense in the 9th but a win is a win.

Horrible defense in the 3rd as well when Sanchez's MLB Leading 14th Passed Ball lead to Boston's first unearned run.

Solid pitching by Happ negating an even better performance by Evoldi.

Walker's 3 run HR was one of NY's 3 hits.

Judge played and went 0-4, a 112 mph line drive out, a K, a groundout, and a drive to the Warning Track in left.

Price v Severino next.

NY up 3 games in the Loss Column for WC.

Yanks only have 12 games left with 5 of those being against the Sox who will be resting players and 3 vs baseball worst team in the O's...should be sitting pretty good in terms of hosting the WC game.

Congrats to the BoSox on 3rd straight AL East Title

Congrats to the BoSox on 3rd straight AL East Title

Loss the lead to Stanton's grand slam, then scored 7 unanswered runs to defeat NY 11-6. Big night for Betts at the place, probably locking up AL MVP.

Meanwhile A's closed to 1.5 games laying 21 runs on the Angels.

Voit HR makes him 12th Yankee with at least 10 HRs for the season, a MLB record.

Stanton's GS HR was the Yankees 247th, setting a new Team record.

Sabathia got the win pitching 6 good innings, allowing 2 runs on 6 hits leaving with a 4 run lead. He whiffed 5 leaving him 19 short of the 3,000 K Club.

Bull Pen wasn't as sharp. Loaisiga gave up 2 runs while getting 1 out. Cole gave up 3 while get 1 out. Roberson gave up 1 run while getting 1 out but got a Hold. Betances got Save #4.

Hicks and Gregorius both homered. Judge had a double and an RBI, the first since his return.

NY clinched a Playoff Spot yesterday. Today they lost to Baltimore and may have lost Gregorius for the season and playoffs with cartiladge damage to his wrist.

Oakland currently trails the Twins 5-1 in the 7th.

Yankees have 7 games remaining, 4 with Tampa, 3 with BoSox
