Tanaka Shutouts TB on 3 hits.

The night after Severino got rough up for 11 hits by TB including a pair of HRs and a pair of doubles Tanka allowed 3 hits (one double), walked 1, and struck out 9.

He threw 105 pitches and joins Severino as the only Yankees with CG Shutouts this season.

Yankees looking for Gleyber Torres to return Wednesday
By George A. King III July 24, 2018 | 7:47pm

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — When Gary Sanchez went on the DL on Tuesday for the second time this season with a right groin problem, the catcher wasn’t contributing at the plate or behind it before and after the first DL stint.

The Yankees hope that rookie second baseman Gleyber Torres picks up where he left off when he landed on the DL on July 5 with a right hip problem that kept him out of the All-Star Game.

In 63 games, Torres is hitting .294 with 15 homers, 42 RBIs, a .350 on-base percentage and a .905 OPS. He was the DH for Tampa (Single-A) Tuesday night and was expected back in the Yankees’ lineup for Wednesday’s matinee game against the Rays at Tropicana Field.

“Hopefully he will be in the lineup (Wednesday),’’ manager Aaron Boone said of Torres, who was 3-for-7 in two minor league games going into Tuesday’s game.

“He has had good at-bats the last couple of days. I watched a handful of his at-bats and he is getting out of the box well. He is chomping at the bit and we are really excited to get him back.’’

Since Torres went on the shelf the Yankees were 7-7 heading into Tuesday night’s game against the Rays. Brandon Drury, Neil Walker and Tyler Wade handed second base in Torres’ absence. Drury started at second Tuesday night.

Boone said he wasn’t sure if the Yankees would send a pitcher or a position player out to make room for Torres. Right-handed reliever Giovanny Gallegos would be a candidate if it’s a pitcher. Wade and Drury have been up and down this year, and one could be on the move again.

...

Stanton had nine hits in the last nine at-bats in the last two games at Tropicana Field entering Tuesday night’s action. The last Yankee to do that was Lou Piniella at Kansas City’s Kauffman Stadium, from Sept. 3, 1982 to May 3, 1983.

MLB trade: Yankees get J.A. Happ in three-player deal with Blue Jays
Happ might be the best starter moved this month

R.J. Anderson & Mike Axisa 6h ago

The New York Yankees have landed the rotation help they've been trying to acquire since the offseason.

The Yankees and Blue Jays have announced a trade sending veteran southpaw J.A. Happ to New York. Third baseman Brandon Drury and outfield prospect Billy McKinney lead to Toronto.

Yankees PR Dept.

@YankeesPR
OFFICIAL: The Yankees have acquired LHP J.A. Happ from the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for INF Brandon Drury and OF Billy McKinney.
3:10 PM - Jul 26, 2018

Happ, 35, is widely believed to be the best starting pitcher who will be moved before the deadline. A free agent at season's end, thus far this season he's posted a 4.18 ERA (101 ERA+) and 3.71 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 20 starts. He's scuffled recently, allowing at least five runs in three of his last four outings.

Nonetheless, the Yankees are banking on Happ's recent track record as an above-average starter. From 2015-17, Happ accumulated a 3.43 ERA (122 ERA+) and 3.02 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Earlier this year, he made his first career All-Star Game. New York's rotation depth chart looks something now that the trade is finalized:

Luis Severino
Masahiro Tanaka
CC Sabathia
J.A. Happ
Sonny Gray
Jordan Montgomery (out for the season with Tommy John surgery)
Luis Cessa
Domingo German

Cessa and German had be filling in as the fifth starter since Montgomery went down in May. Happ now takes over that rotation spot and, if nothing else, figures to provide more innings and a little more consistency. The Yankees had been hoping to shake loose a true impact starter with multiple years of control prior to the deadline -- Jacob deGrom would've been ideal -- but that pitcher just is not available.

As for the Blue Jays, they have started their trade deadline sell-off. Happ is on his way to New York and Seung-Hwan Oh was traded to the Rockies on Thursday as well. Others like Tyler Clippard, Marco Estrada, Aaron Loup, and John Axford could be on the move before the July 31st non-waiver trade deadline as well.

Drury, 25, went from the Diamondbacks to the Yankees in a spring training trade and was the team's Opening Day third baseman. He landed on the disabled list with migraines and blurry vision shortly thereafter and rookie Miguel Andujar seized the third base job. Drury's spent his time at Triple-A and on the MLB bench since.

So far this season Drury has hit .176/.263/.275 with one home run in 18 MLB games and .294/.403/447 with five home runs in 55 Triple-A games. He is a third baseman by trade but does have experience at first and second bases, as well as left field. With Josh Donaldson still sidelined, Toronto could slot him in as their regular third baseman for the time being.

McKinney, 23, is well-traveled former first round pick. He went from the Athletics to the Cubs in the Jeff Samardzija trade and from the Cubs to the Yankees in the Aroldis Chapman trade. Now he goes to the Blue Jays. McKinney is hitting .230/.294/.502 with 13 home runs in 54 Triple-A games so far this season. He went 1 for 4 in two MLB games earlier this year.

The Yankees have now added Happ and Zach Britton to fortify their pitching staff, though they might not be done with their deadline shopping. Gary Sanchez is on the disabled list and could be out until September. The Yankees could scour the market for a catcher to help fill-in while Sanchez out.

Judge will miss at least 3 weeks with broken wrist suffered in Yankees win
By Dan Martin July 26, 2018 | 10:27pm

The Yankees got a victory over the Royals, a solid start from Sonny Gray and picked up veteran lefty J.A. Happ on Thursday, but what was shaping up as a good day took a turn when Aaron Judge had to leave the 7-2 win after being plunked in the right wrist.

Judge, who was the Yankees’ DH, initially stayed in the game after getting drilled by a Jakob Junis 93 mph fastball in the first inning. He subsequently scored the Yankees’ first run, then reached on an infield single in the third, but left in the fourth for a pinch hitter.

Judge headed to New York Presbyterian Hospital for an MRI exam after being seen by team physician Dr. Chris Ahmad. Judge was replaced by Miguel Andujar as the DH. After the game, the Yankees announced the right fielder broke his wrist and will be out at least three weeks.

Tonight OF Aaron Judge sustained a chip fracture of the right wrist (ulnar styloid bone). No surgery has been recommended. The Yankees approximate a 3-week time period before Judge can swing a bat in a game situation.

Yankees use that international money to land stud Cuban teen
By Post Sports Desk July 29, 2018 | 7:15pm

This helps explain why the Yankees hoarded all that international signing bonus money.

The Yankees signed Osiel Rodriguez, a 16-year-old pitching prospect out of Cuba, for $600,000 on Sunday.

The Yankees had made trades Saturday and Sunday to accrue the rights to spend more money on the international market — gaining $2.5 million with trades of relievers Chasen Shreve, Giovanny Gallegos and Caleb Frare — with Rodriguez apparently being part of that plan.

Baseball America ranked Rodriguez as the No. 1 pitcher in the international market and No. 5 prospect overall. The right-hander reportedly has a fastball that touches 96 mph as a still-developing teenager.

Yankees trade another relief prospect to White Sox
By Post Sports Desk July 29, 2018 | 11:49am

The Yankees are clearing space.

Caleb Frare, a lefty relief pitcher in Triple-A, was dealt to the White Sox on Sunday, two days before the trade deadline, for $1.5 million in international signing money, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed.

Between this trade and Saturday’s, which sent Chasen Shreve and Giovanny Gallegos to St. Louis, the Yankees have accrued $2.5 million to allocate to international signings.

Frare, who spent all but one game this season at Double-A Trenton, notched a 0.81 ERA with 58 strikeouts in 44 2/3 innings this year between the two levels. The Yankees would have had to put the 25-year-old on the 40-man roster this offseason or else risk losing him in the Rule 5 draft. By getting international signing money now, the Yankees guarantee they don’t lose him for nothing.

Yankees trade Chasen Shreve to the Cardinals
By Dan Martin July 29, 2018 | 12:15am

The Yankees added to their bullpen earlier in the week when they picked up Zach Britton from Baltimore and Saturday they lost a reliever when they traded another lefty, Chasen Shreve, to St. Louis.

The trade of Shreve opens a spot on the roster for Sunday’s starter, J.A. Happ, who arrived Saturday after being acquired from Toronto. In exchange for the 28-year-old Shreve and right-hander Giovanny Gallegos, the Yankees received first baseman Luke Voit and international bonus pool money.

Voit, 27, was 2-for-11 with a homer in eight games with the Cardinals this season and spent most of the year with Triple-A Memphis. The 26-year-old Gallegos pitched in 20 games for the Yankees over the past two seasons and was at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

“I knew we had to make a move,’’ an emotional Shreve said after the Yankees split a doubleheader against the Royals on Saturday in The Bronx. “I just didn’t know what it was gonna be. I had prepared myself for it. I love it here. I’ve been here four years and it’s gonna suck to leave.”

Shreve pitched an inning and gave up a run in the first game of the doubleheader, a 10-5 loss.

It was the first time he had been scored upon since July 7, as he rebounded from a tough first two months of the season. Heading into Saturday, Shreve had allowed just two runs in his previous 11 outings over 11 innings for a 1.64 ERA.

And he picked up a key save last Saturday after Aroldis Chapman imploded against the Mets while trying to protect a four-run lead. Shreve entered with the bases loaded, no one out and the Yankees up by two runs. Shreve got a double play and a comebacker to let the Yankees escape with a victory.

The Yankees’ bullpen now consists of a pair of southpaws — Chapman and Britton — as well as Dellin Betances, A.J. Cole, Chad Green, Jonathan Holder, David Robertson and Adam Warren.

Shreve pitched in 40 games for the Yankees this season. He came to the Yankees prior to the 2015 season, when they sent former prospect Manny Banuelos to Atlanta for Shreve and David Carpenter. Shreve appeared in 180 games for the Yankees, although he was not on the postseason roster last year.

“I’ll have a good opportunity over there,’’ Shreve said of St. Louis. “But I’m gonna miss these guys.”

Yankees trade Adam Warren to Mariners
By Post Sports Desk July 30, 2018 | 6:13pm

The Yankees fortifying their bullpen with Zach Britton has led to some casualties.

The Yankees dealt righty reliever Adam Warren to the Mariners on Monday, a day before the trade deadline, The Post’s Joel Sherman confirmed. The Yankees will be receiving international signing bonus money — which they have been hoarding — in return. Whether any players would be coming from Seattle was not immediately known.

Warren, in his second go-round with the Yankees, had a 2.70 ERA in 30 innings this year, though he had a tough month of July, allowing six runs in 10 innings.

Now busy Yankees trade for Lance Lynn
By Post Sports Desk July 30, 2018 | 7:25pm

The Yankees couldn’t get an ace. So they’re getting multiple rotation options.

A few days after acquiring J.A. Happ, the Yankees traded for Minnesota’s Lance Lynn on Monday, adding more depth to a rotation that already includes Luis Severino, Masahiro Tanaka, CC Sabathia and Sonny Gray. Going to the Twins will be minor league first baseman Tyler Austin and 19-year-old pitching prospect Luis Rijo.

Lynn, a 31-year-old right-hander, is 7-8 with a 5.10 ERA on the year, but he’s been better of late. In his past four starts, the longtime Cardinal went 2-2 with a 3.68 ERA.

Just hours before, the Yankees flipped Adam Warren to Seattle for international signing bonus money.

MLB trade deadline: Yankees land Lance Lynn from Twins in exchange for Tyler Austin and minor leaguer
The Yankees have again reportedly moved to fortify their pitching staff

Dayn Perry 2m ago

The Yankees have acquired right-handed starter Lance Lynn from the Twins in exchange for first baseman/outfielder Tyler Austin, minor-league right-hander Luis Rijo, and cash.

Lynn, 31, has pitched to a 5.10 ERA and a 1.61 K/BB ratio in 20 starts this season. Those are poor numbers, but Lynn's been generally much better since a disastrous April. As well, he has long history of plus run-prevention (career ERA+ of 114 entering 2018). Lynn is in his walk year and is owed the balance of a $12 million salary for this season. Some details on the money side:

Joel Sherman

@Joelsherman1
Lynn owed about $4.3M. Hear #Twins will pay about $2M of that. Between offset and dealing Warren and $1.18M-ish left on his deal, #Yankees stayed about neutral in salary in this day's work.
6:32 PM - Jul 30, 2018

As Sherman notes, the Yankees were able to offset almost all of this salary intake by trading Adam Warren to the Mariners earlier on Monday. That's important since the Yankees badly want to reset their luxury-tax status this year and are right up against the line.

The Yankees are barreling their way toward a 100-win season, but in part because they trail the Red Sox in the AL East standings (and are thus in line to play in the wild-card "knockout" round), Brian Cashman has been busy reinforcing the pitching staff. In addition to Lynn, the Yankees in recent days have swung trades for starter J.A. Happ and lefty reliever Zach Britton.

As for Lynn's role, Jon Heyman reports it could be as a swingman in the Bronx:

Jon Heyman

@JonHeyman
Lynn seems to fit as pen plus starting insurance. surprise get for yanks.

6:23 PM - Jul 30, 2018

On the Minnesota side of things, the 26-year-old Austin gives them some pop (.459 SLG, 15 home runs in 85 big-league games) and the ability to man first and the outfield corners. Rijo, 19, was signed by the Yankees out of Venezuela as an undrafted free agent in 2015. Across parts of three minor-league seasons, he's pitched to a 2.80 ERA with 117 strikeouts in 125 1/3 innings while working primarily as a starter. This season, Rijo has risen to the Single-A level.

Holder came to pitch the 4th and looked like 50 shades of Gray. Faced 7 batters, walked the first on 5 pitches, a double, Benintendi reached on a FC to Holder that did not result in an out, a 3 run HR, double, single, double.

6 runs, 5 hits, 1 BB, no outs. Fortunately he only faced 7 batters.

Green relieved Holder and continued batting practice, got 2 outs, then a double and a pair of singles drove in 2 more runs.

Cessa promoted today from Scranton got the 3rd out. Boston scored 8.

Gregorius 3 run HR in the 1st, Hicks solo HR in the 2nd, and Gregorius again in the 5th with nobody on scored the Yankee runs, 10-5.
