Gray and Bullpen Shutout Baltimore

Gray and Bullpen Shutout Baltimore

Sonny Gray with his last chance start made the most of shutting down the O's for 6 inning on 3 hits, a walk, and 8 Ks. His best outing since June 6th when he shut out Toronto for 8 innings on 2 hits and 8 Ks.

Unlike the past two games the Yankee offense opened up with 14 hits, 3 HRs, including Bird's Grand Slam. In the 2nd inning Bundy struck out Bird with 11 pitches with Bird fouling off 5 of them. In the 3rd inning Bundy and Bird had another marathon at bat with Bird hitting the 9th pitch into the stands. Romine and Wade hit the other HRs. The light hitting Wade was 3-5 adding 56 points to his BA. Stanton was 4-5 with 2 RBI's.

Sox won their 9th in a row to maintain their 3.5 game lead.

I dont know if anyone listens to "The Short Porch" podcast (done by the BarStool guys i believe), but the host "Hubbs" has a source who broke the Giancarlo Stanton news before it happened, and is now saying that Manny Machado to the Yanks is VERYYYY close to happening.

Obviously this is no guarantee, but would be AMAZING! HAHA. Their belief is that Justus Sheffield may or may not be in play, along with some other prospects. They do NOT believe Andujar will be involved, as he would possibly be in play in a separate trade for a Starting Pitcher, somewhere down the line. Origionally i was not in favor of giving Andujar up, but as they put it, "Andujar's CEILING , that he may or may not reach, is not even what Manny Machado is right now!"

Just wanted to drop that info, take with a grain of salt of course, but I had to as I am AMPED at the thought of Manny coming over

(as a side note, Manny Machado HATESSS the Red Sox...... BRING HIM ON OVER!)

Rollercoaster Gray? Next outing could possibly be a complete opposite of last night's game (if he continues as he had been doing this yr.). Ugh, I wish he would become the type of pitcher that Yankees thought they were getting.

Last night Severino was mortal but Kluber was forced to pitch extra innings due to the Tribe's terrible bullpen allowing the NY to prevail. Tonight German was worse and Bieber survived a long outing as the Tribe's bullpen gave up a couple of runs but held on for the win.

Meanwhile Sox win streak ended leaving them still 3.5 games ahead.

Tonight was 75th time NY and Boston have played on the same day this season and only the sixth time they both lost.

I'm not sure a comparison to a rollercoaster is fair to rollercoasters. They tend to give you your money's worth.

And what type of pitcher did the Yankees think they were getting?

His best year was 14-7 with a 2.73 ERA which followed a 14-10 season with a 3.08 ERA. He averaged 213 innings in those seasons in '14 and '15. The next year he was 5-11, 5.69 and his innings almost halved. He's never regained the form of those 2 early seasons of his career.

Since the '15 season he's 21-30 with his WHIP exploding from 1.082 in '15 to 1.496 in '16. He lowered his WHIP back down some the next 2 years but this year he's at 1.511, a career worse.

For his last 30 games (OAK and NY) he's averaged 5 innings/outing with a 5.46 ERA and 1.51 WHIP.

Yanks win on Romine's "Inside The Park Little League Home Run". Two bagger turned into a run on two consecutive errors in the same at bat. Robertson gets win #7, Chapman Save #26. Gregorius 3 run HR.

Clippard thinks he's still with the Yankees with a bottom of the 9th Blown Save #5, allowing Sox to tie it up. Bogaert's GS in the 10th wins it 6-2.

Sox still lead by 3.5

MVP goes to Cleveland right fielder Brandon Guyer. If he doesn’t play another out this year, that will only help the Indians. Runner up for the MVP, home plate umpire. Yankees pitchers had a Buick of a strike zone, Tribe did not. Horrible strike zone got the Tribe to swing at garbage outside of what they would consider a strike.

Trade Rumblings: Angels, Yanks, Eovaldi, Mets, Odorizzi, Astros, Iglesias
By Connor Byrne | July 14, 2018 at 4:59pm CDT
The Angels, one game over .500 and 10 out of a playoff spot, could elect to sell at the July 31 non-waiver trade deadline. If that happens, they may have logical trade partners in the Yankees, Jon Morosi of MLB.com observes. The Yankees have been scouting the Angels, per Morosi, who writes that New York “would have interest” in left-handers Tyler Skaggs and Andrew Heaney if were they to become available. Further, there are likely Yankees prospects who would pique the Angels’ interest, given that Halos general manager Billy Eppler had a prominent role in the Bombers’ front office not long ago.

While it’s unclear if either Skaggs or Heaney will hit the block, Rays righty Nathan Eovaldi will likely end up on the move in the next couple weeks. The Yankees, with whom he pitched from 2015-16, have “closely” watched Eovaldi of late, as have the Brewers and Braves (among others), Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports. Eovaldi’s most recent start was a nightmare, as he allowed eight earned runs on nine hits and two walks in 2 2/3 innings against Minnesota on Friday. In the process, his season ERA climbed from 3.35 to 4.59 (with a 4.45 FIP) over 51 innings.

Eovaldi strikes me as more of what NY already has. This article says there a whole lot more:

https://www.fangraphs.com/blogs/nathan-eovaldi-might-be-the-best-starter-on-the-market/

Lots of graphs, clips, and stats to make the point why Eovaldi should be the target.

Seriously doubt Skaggs over Heaney get moved... that would imply a complete rebuild aside from adding a few pieces and hoping you stay healthy for once

Subway Series

Subway Series

Yanks and Mets open 3 game series in the Bronx tonight. Mets could put a crimp in Yanks plans to close the gap with BoSox. Pitching matchups definitely favor the Mets.

German Sent Down

German Sent Down

In the first inning German gave up a walk and 3 doubles. After the game he was sent down to the minors for much needed work. Warren wasn't much better. He relieved German with a 1.85 ERA and after 2 innings left with a 2.49 ERA.

Yankees pounded out 14 hits but only 2 extra base hits, doubles, and were 2-13 with RISP.

Sox win 1-0, NY drops 5.5 back.

Gray On A Win Streak!

Gray On A Win Streak!

Two in a row, 5.1 innings, 2 ER on 3 hits.

Bullpen held them until Chapman arrived in the 9th to put the game away.

1st batter BB on 6 pitches
2nd batter Infield single on 1-0 count
3rd batter & 4th batter BBs on 4 pitches each plating a run, 7-4
5th batter HBP on 3-0 count for another run, 7-5

Exit Chapman without getting an out.
Shreve came in and another run scored on 4-3 DP, 7-6
Game ended on a comebacker to Shreve.

Boone blew it off as Chapman was rusty. Chapman threw 19 pitches to 5 batters, 16 were outside the strike zone. Rusty? 11 balls in a row! Hit a batter on a 3-0 count! The Tinman could have done better.

Anyone think the Yanks are going to make a pitching acquisition before the deadline?

Sanchez being ripped after his lack of hustle yesterday.

First for the passed ball that rolled down to the 3rd base coaches box while Sanchez trotted after the ball Bauers who had advanced to 3rd from 2nd kept on running beating Sanchez's belated throw to Severino covering home.

Sanchez also trotted down the first base line on the last out of the game. He apparently thought the out would be made at 2nd but the runner beat the throw. He sped up then but it was too late. He was thrown out at first to end the game denying the tying run from scoring.

Mike Axisa, CBSSports, speculated that Sanchez may have re-injured his groin on the passed ball except that Sanchez played 8 more innings. Post game Sanchez was contrite about the lack of hustle and did not mention any new injury.

Sanchez returned over the weekend after missing three weeks with a groin injury
Mike Axisa 3h ago

The last 24 hours have gone from bad to worse for Yankees catcher Gary Sanchez.

Monday night, Sanchez was involved in two plays that, if nothing else, looked awful to those watching. First he took his time chasing down a passed ball, allowing a runner to score from second base. Then he didn't run out the game-ending ground out with the bases loaded and the Yankees down a run. It didn't look good and Sanchez got skewered for it.

Turns out Sanchez's lack of mobility Monday night may have been caused by an injury. Or re-aggravation of an injury, to be exact. The Yankees have placed Sanchez on the 10-day DL with an aggravation of a recent groin injury, the team announced. An MRI confirmed the injury. The club has not yet revealed a timetable for his return.

Per Mike Axisa Rumor Mill

Yankees close to acquiring Britton
The New York Yankees are reportedly nearing a deal to acquire Baltimore Orioles reliever Zach Britton in exchange for three players, per MASN's Roch Kubatko:

Roch Kubatko

@masnRoch
Back to Britton: Source says 3 players coming back to #orioles for Britton, but not finished yet. Moving toward completion

7:30 PM - Jul 24, 2018
Britton, 30, has been limited to 16 appearances this season due to an Achilles injury. In those games, he's posted a 3.45 ERA and 1.30 strikeout-to-walk ratio. He has seen his velocity improve recently, and has held the opposition to three hits in his last eight appearances -- though he's also walked four and struck out just six.

There's no word yet on who the Orioles will be receiving, though it's worth noting that Yankees prospect Dillon Tate was scratched from his start.
