Yankees prospect Gleyber Torres continues to dominate in Arizona Fall League - CBSSports.com

In the second week of AFL play, Torres hit .667 with a double, a home run, three walks and two stolen bases. Overall, Torres boasts a line of .391/.517/.739 with two homers in seven games for the Scottsdale Scorpions and more walks than strikeouts.

Based on his age-adjusted regular-season performance, Torres was already in line to be a consensus top 10 overall prospect heading into 2017. His AFL bestowals have only cemented his status. Be excited, Yankees fans.

Yanks had two long balls but also scored tonight with small ball.

Real small ball.

In the 7th they scored a run on a walk, sandwiched in between 3 hit batsmen. No hit, no error, no ball put into play.

I was at the game tonight. Thought they would play poorly due to the late game last night but they just dominated.

Such a fun Yankee team to watch!

It's like watching the 1995 Yankees.

Prior to 95 the Yankees were just plain bad.

Then In 95 the core group started to come together. Yankees made the playoffs and then they were on their way to greatness.

In recent years the Yankees have not been horrible like the late eighties and early nineties; Yankees have been an average team.

But with this group of players I feel a core group number two coming together to take us Yankees fans on another run .

Yeah, a bunch of young guys and some wily veterans sprinkled in the line-up. Fun to watch, no doubt.

April World Series Champs

May's as well!

May's in the book and the AL East leaders are +3 in the loss column over the Sox who replaced the skidding Birds.

Judge leads the majors in HRs.

Gardner 11 HRs has surpassed his total from last year in less than two months.

Yanks strike out every 4th AB. NY pitchers striking out opponents more often.

Pitching still questionable but some bright spots. CC won back to back games for first time since last June. The kid hasn't given up an HR in 4 games, a career record. Chapman's missed 35 games and still on DL. Bullpen doing well in his absence.

Bird's missed most of the season on DL.

Season's still young but "The Franchise" is doing much better that expected.

After dropping the first game of the three game series, NY outscored Boston 17-1 in the next two with solid pitching and a strong offense. Yanks had 3 HRs between Gardner and Sanchez (2). Judge didn't have one but had 3 hits to raise his BA to .330.

The AP notes:
Judge's line-drive single up the middle in the sixth registered an exit velocity of 120 mph off the bat - the hardest-hit ball in the majors this season, according to MLB's Statcast. The 6-foot-7, 282-pound rookie holds the top three spots on that list.

NY has a 4 game in the Loss Column over both Boston and Baltimore as they open a series against the O's.

Pinstripe Power

I actually have a old VHS tape somewhere called Pinstripe Power. It was done about the Yankees the year Maris & Mantle made their run at Ruth.

Back in the late 80's my wife worked at a firm that created and distributed specialty VHS tapes. The Yankees were one of their customers. She gets a phone call from a guy at the Yankees asking why the amount of their check was so low. She was explaining that they had deducted the production costs as per the contract. She comes home and tells me she's spoken to this guy, he's not happy and was yelling at her because he thought their check would be much higher. Knowing I'm a Yankee fan, she then asks, "Do you know a guy named George Steinbrenner?" I replied, "You don't?". I explain who it was and she replies, "Now I know why the owner said tho send any call from the Yankees directly to him". lol

I looked up the Exit Velocity Stats. In addition to owning the Top 3, Judge owns 7 of Top 15, 9 of Top 25, 12 of Top 35, and 13 of Top 42. He doesn't show up in the remaining 58 slots of the Top 100.

His 13 Rockets range from 114.9 to 119.8 and break down into 5 Singles, 3 Doubles, 3 HRs, 1 Field Out, and 1 Double Play. One of the Singles went 330 feet.

Yanks whipped Baltimore 8-2 last night with 3 HRs and more solid pitching.

NY has 3 game win streak over Boston and Baltimore by combined score of 25-3.

Chapman thinks he'll be back in a week. Bird still rehabbing in AAA.

Orioles Hoping Mercy Rule Invoked!

Orioles Hoping Mercy Rule Invoked!

Tillman started from Baltimore and got the first two batters out ... then Judge put one out for a MLB Leading 19th Homer.

... and then the dam burst!
Holiday singled
Castro doubled
Sanchez singled in 2 runs
Gregorius homered for 2 more
Headley walked on 4 pitches
After a WP sent Headley to second, Carter singled him in.
Gardner hit into a FC to end the punishment for the moment.

In the Second,Tillman got the first batter out then gave up back to back walks before Castro hit a 3 run HR.
Tillman got an early shower after allowing 9 runs in one and one third.

Hicks opened the 4th with a walk, Judge singled, then Holliday hit a 3 run HR.

Meanwhile Severino hasn't allowed a runner through 4 innings while striking out 5.

12-0 NY though 4.

WATCH: Yankees' Aaron Judge breaks another Statcast record with rocket home run - CBSSports.com

by Mike Axisa

Saturday night, the Yankees thoroughly dominated the Orioles (NYY 16, BAL 3) for their fourth consecutive win. New York is 36-23 on the season, and their plus-104 run differential is tied with the Astros for the best in baseball.

The Yankees scored their first run of the night the same way they've scored many runs this season: with an Aaron Judge home run. He ripped a missile into the left field seats for a solo home run against Chris Tillman in the first inning. The ball left his bat at 121.1 mph. It was the hardest hit home run since Statcast was introduced in 2015.

(There's a video at the link above.)

The home run was No. 19 of the season for Judge, which leads MLB. He also had a single and a double, which raised his overall season batting line to .332/.439/.678 (191 OPS+). Judge has been a one-man wrecking crew.

Here are the top five exit velocities this season:
Aaron Judge, Yankees: 121.1 mph home run on June 10
Aaron Judge, Yankees: 119.8 mph single on June 8
Aaron Judge, Yankees: 119.4 mph home run on April 28
Aaron Judge, Yankees: 119.0 mph double on May 5
Giancarlo Stanton, Marlins: 118.7 mph double on May 2

It's debatable whether Statcast is good for baseball or bad for baseball. Me? I like watching massive home runs and rockets off the bat. Those are fun and I am pro-fun. Judge is a gift from the exit velocity gods.

It continues ... Hicks hits 2 run double, then Judge hits 2 run HR, #21. 14-3

Judge 4-4, .344, 21 HR 47 RBI

At the moment I believe that puts Judge in the Triple Crown Lead depending upon what a couple of others due today.

It's early 60 games into the season but ... Judge is on pace for a 57 HR 127 RBI season ... as a Rookie.

Makes it interesting.

The Yankees are in first place and it's not only because of Judge and the offense - CBSSports.com

The Yankees have also been one of the top run prevention teams in baseball this season
Mike Axisa 7h ago

The @Yankees scored at least 5 runs in the 1st inning of consecutive games for the first time since a DH on 8/25/1939. (via @EliasSports)

Overall, the Yankees are now 37-23 this season and have a four-game lead in the AL East. Their plus-115 run differential is the best in baseball. Even better than the Astros (plus-98). That's not surprisingly considering New York has scored the most runs (353) and allowed the second fewest (238) this season.
That second number is a surprising. The runs allowed. Only the Dodgers (219) have allowed fewer runs than the Yankees this season. Here are the top run prevention teams on a per game basis:

1. Dodgers: 3.42 runs allowed per game
2. Diamondbacks: 3.91
3. Astros: 3.94
4. Yankees: 3.97
5. Rockies: 4.18

... it wasn't until Sunday, their 60th game of the season, that the Yankees used a sixth starter. The Yankees, Cardinals, and Braves were the only teams in baseball that had used only five starters this season heading into the weekend. The Braves used a sixth starter for the first time Saturday, during a doubleheader, which means the Cardinals are now the only team in baseball to use just five starters in 2017.The Dodgers being at the top isn't a shocker given their pitching depth and pitcher friendly home ballpark. The other four teams all play in hitter's parks though, especially the Rockies, and both the Astros and Yankees play in the American League, so their pitchers don't get to face the other team's pitcher. They have to face a DH.

The AL rookie WAR leaderboard, per FanGraphs:
Aaron Judge, Yankees: +3.9 WAR
Jordan Montgomery, Yankees: +1.4 WAR
Ben Gamel, Mariners: +1.3 WAR
Mitch Haniger, Mariners: +1.3 WAR
Guillermo Heredia, Mariners: +0.7 WAR
(Aside: How about that Mariners rookie class? Also, the Yankees drafted Gamel and traded him to Seattle in a minor deal last summer. So the top three AL rookies in WAR right now were originally drafted by New York.)

rotation numbers for the Yankees' five main starting pitchers (Chad Green got the one-time spot start Sunday):

Pitcher GS IP ERA ERA+ WHIP K/BB WAR
Montgomery 11 63 1/3 3.55 125 1.23 2.65 +1.4
Pineda 12 71 2/3 3.39 131 1.13 4.41 +1.0
Sabathia 12 71 1/3 3.66 121 1.26 2.52 +1.0
Severino 12 75 1/3 2.75 161 1.02 4.67 +1.9
Tanaka 12 66 6.55 68 1.50 3.22 +0.1

Results Of Monday's MLB Draft

Results Of Monday's MLB Draft

16 team logo Yankees
The Pick: RHP Clarke Schmidt, South Carolina. Through nine starts, Schmidt looked like a top 10 pick. He was 4-2 with a 1.34 ERA and 70 strikeouts against 18 walks in 60 ⅓ innings. He works up into the high-90s with movement on his fastball and teams it with a very good slider and a change. Of course, he injured his elbow after those nine starts and has had Tommy John surgery. So there's some risk here and he won't be helping the ballclub for a few years. There's huge upside, though.

Where the Hell Did Aaron Judge Come From?
With a league-leading 21 home runs, the 25-year-old rookie is hitting the ball harder than anyone we’ve ever measured

So, how did this happen?
Judge was a first-round pick, but a late first-rounder, 32nd overall out of Fresno State in 2013. He was long a top-100 prospect, but never a top-10 prospect. He was flat-out bad in 95 plate appearances last year: .179/.263/.345. And if the Yankees thought he was going to do this, they wouldn’t have floated him in trade discussions.

...

Good Article!
