Orioles fans are starting to come out of the woodworks. Getting annoying

I am a Braves fan but live in MD so i watch the O's all the time and kinda surprised they are doing this well actually. Alot of their stats say they shouldn't be this good. But Now you know how all baseball feels about the Yankees and Red Sox.

Yankees found their bats to 13-3. 14 hits, Jeter had 2 includling a HR to close to 4 hits behind Willie Mays for 10th place. Granderson had 3 hits including a HR to break his slump but Swisher was 0-4 continuing his slump.

Joba got the win in relief and knocked 1.20 runs off his hefty ERA to 7.50. Joba's ERA qualifies him to start for NY as Yankee starters in September have a 6.61 ERA.

Tex reinjured his calf Saturday and may be gone. MRI Monday.

Pettite making progress.

Yanks and O's off Monday. Kuroda pitches against Lester Tuesday in Boston to open a 4 game series.

The O's and TB play a 3 game set starting Tuesday.

One hit shy of tying Willie Mays on the AllTime Hit List, Jeter injured an ankle trying to outrun a 4-6-3 double play. He lunged for 1st base with an extended right foot, was beaten by the throw for the 3rd out. He limping after crossing the bag and was removed from the game.

So after Wednesday's 5-4 road victory over the Boston Red Sox, Jeter met media members with an expected answer: He'll be in the lineup Thursday.

"It's really not a thing," Jeter told reporters. "They just said, 'Put ice on it (and) come back tomorrow.' "

Oakland nipped the O's 3-2 keeping NY and Baltimore in a First Place Tie in the AL East.

However in the WildCard Race Oakland picked another game in the loss column over both NY and Baltimore with LA, TB, and Det still in contention.


Oakland was 2 more games with Balt then goes to Det for 3 then to NY for 3. They came determine the outcome of the WC team. Of course after NY they play 4 in Texas, 3 in Seattle, and 3 at home against Texas. So they could also knock Texas out of a Divison Championship.

Shields threw a 2 hitter against Texas in his last start. He's 6-1, 1.90 ERA over last 8 starts.

Nova hasn't pitched since going on DL 8/21 with a shoulder injury. Prior to that he allowed 28 runs in 29.1 innings.

Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter enters Saturday's game against the Rays with 197 hits this season. He's 38 years old. When he reaches 200 -- and he will, barring some kind of awful slump or an extended injury absence -- he'll become only the fifth player in major-league history to accrue 200 hits in his age-38 season or later.

In fact, Jeter entered Friday leading the majors in hits. If he holds that lead, he'll be the first player to ever lead the majors in his age-38 season or later in a season that wasn't shortened by a strike -- this is defined as a player who turned 38 by June 30 of that season. Paul Molitor led the AL in hits in 1996, but not the entire major leagues. Check it out (reference: Baseball-Reference.com play index):

Considering the Yankees have 18 games left, it's pretty reasonable to believe Jeter will end up with more than 208 hits, so he'll have the second-most hits in a season for a player 38-plus years old. A run at Molitor's 225 is a tall order, but 28 hits in 18 games is obviously possible.

Regardless, this is pretty impressive work from the 38-year-old captain.

N.B.

At his .323 season average he'd get about 25 more hits or 223.

At his 2nd half average around .360, he'd get 2 or 3 more hits, say 225.

His career best is 219 in '99.


One other note, Jeter has a lifetime BA of .313 at SS but .330 when at DH.


None of these scenarios get him enough hits to pass Eddie Collins for 9th Place on the All-Time Hit List. He needs 29 hits to tie Collins and 30 to pass him. Five more hits past that and he moves ahead of Paul Molitor for 8th Place.

Collins, Molitor and Honus Wagner, 3,430 hits, would all be reachable in '13 for Jeter, 3,285, if he didn't get another hit this season.

Hughes has started 30 games averaging 6 inning/start and a 1 HR every 5-1/3 innings.

Vasquez has only started 4 games, pitching a total of 20 innings, allowing 19 hits, walking 15, and striking out 8.
