What Seniors Stay? Who enters the portal? Who would you like to see enter the portal?

I’m hoping both Adimilola brothers stay or at least one of them. Can Bauer get another year? Do we think Avery Davis will stay? Do we want him to? Does Lenzy stay? He might do better elsewhere although with Meyer gone and Pyne back on the bench where he belongs maybe he could stay. Would like to see him return kicks and punts.

Not sure who will enter the portal?

Of course I hope Pyne enters the portal but he won’t and shouldn’t leave before he graduates. Even if Tommy goes.

The guys who should stay are Joseph, Hart, Justin Ademilola.

Only guy that I could see transferring is maybe Tyree, but I doubt it. But, like every year, guys will transfer in and out.

I feel there will be surprises for those leaving and those staying, that’s probably as speculative I can be.

Pyne I’m pretty sure graduates after this semester I’m pretty sure. He was an early enrollee I know that for a fact. I could have sworn someone said he was done after December

He can if he gets a medical redshirt for this year since he play at all and hasn’t used one

He was taken off scholarship after his injury - a medical hardship. Technically he can get a medical redshirt, and can play a seventh season, but it will not be at ND.

Jayson can't come back. He's run out of eligibility. He played in all four non-COVID years he's been here.

I could see Tyree moving on. I think a lot depends on how Price looks coming back and how big an impact Edwards and/or Love make immediately. I don't want to see him leave, but there's only so many reps and to this point, Diggs and Estime are too good to keep off the field, and if Price is back to 100%, he's going to be tough to keep off the field as well.

With Davis, I don't know if he can come back, much less if he wants to. He's in his 6th year, but he only lost 1 year to injury, and for that medical waiver, generally you need to have lost 2. He was lost too late into last year for it to count under the medical waiver. He may just decide to move on and try to make a roster. I don't think he's going to be drafted, even if he comes back in '23.

It'll be interesting to see what Bertrand and Marist do. I think it's very evident that the young guys are becoming a bigger part of the defense. Kollie, Sneed and Jr are emerging and you've got Drayk and Ausberry coming in too, and with ND playing a lot more 5 DB sets, the reps at LB are going to be slimmer than before. I could see one or both moving on if they end up losing their spot to one of those guys.

I think if Kristofic isn't one of the starting guards next year, he may look to move on.

Finally, I think this will be the last we see of Drew Pyne in a ND uniform. He was an EE, so he'll be graduating early and I just don't see him being a part of the QB competition between Buchner, the grad transfer and potentially Angeli. We know what we have in Pyne and it simply isn't good enough.

They are? Kollie played 0 snaps versus Clemson. Sneed has never played a non garbage time snap at LB. JR gets like 4 or 5 here and there in a game, some at OLB. Bertrand has played almost every snap he’s not injured or ejected from the game.

I’d love for them to blown past the seniors and live up to their significantly higher potential. But I don’t see them forcing a Marist or Bertrand to the portal quite yet. Would be a after spring discussion if at all IMO

Irish illustrated podcast discussed that Avery is done. Lenzy is most likely done. Justin A. May come back. Joseph, brown, hart have option to return, but may all be gone. They want Tyree to transition to slot role and they think he may stay. They seemed to think Pyne is actually not graduating this year despite being an EE

Marist and Bertrand have both really come on the last couple games. It would be in the best interest of the team if they returned and solidified the defensive front 7 next year. There will be a role for anybody deserving of one.

I wonder how much of his decision will be based on the QB they bring in via the portal and who the OC is.

I suspect Pyne will stay until he graduates, whenever that may be. Then - assuming he's been overtaken by a transfer, Buchner or Minchey - may transfer somewhere he can play.
Avery seems done. Same with Lenzy.
Tyree's an interesting case. So's Joseph. Could see Tyree transferring and Joseph hitting the draft, or both/either staying. Neither feels like they have reached their potential.
I don't know why Hart or Brown would go to the NFL at this point; both have things yet to prove and clear roles on our team next year (if anything, Brown could transfer). Same with Justin A.

From listening to II guys, it sounds like there’s a chance for Justin A but that Joseph & Hart are likely gone. Marist needs to come back as he only has one season of film under his belt & needs more. I think he was hoping for a breakout season & making the jump to the League but that’s not happening.

Hopefully, JD Bertrand, DJ Brown, Marist, Justin A all return. Does Bracy have another season?

Agreed on Brown but I could see Hart leaving regardless. The NFL will like his size but that doesn’t mean he gets drafted. O’Malley or Prister (I forget which) pointed out that he spend all last year as roommate w/ Kyle Hamilton and watched him prepare for the Draft. They added that he’s had shoulder issues, so if he returns only to re-injure his shoulder it could spell the end of his career.

I’d say the QB situation comes down to who the staff can bring in as a transfer and how they feel about Angeli. If the Transfer is more of a pocket passer and Angeli looks like he can be a legit #2, then Buchner probably needs to transfer. I’d just keep Pyne as an emergency guy. Problem with Buchner is you have to run a different offense with him. Would rather the starter and #2 have similar skill sets. Tyler seems like a great kid but I’ve seen nothing from him that suggests he can be a high level starter for an entire season.

Then what's the point of declaring for the draft? Come back next year and get better. He'll still be tall. I hear you on the shoulder issues but if he declares and doesn't get drafted, then gets hurt as a UDFA, that too could spell the end of his career. Or, maybe, he has his degree and feels like he's done what he's going to do in college. OK.

Will be curious to see what the post-season draft projections are for Hart. Feels like he has had a good but not quite great year. Big night for him coming Saturday. I'd love to see him back next year, even if our young corners might have more upside, as he seems like a leader. This might be one where a good NIL package makes the difference.

Hart has had in moments, but has been inconsistent. Both tackling and in coverage. His length is amazing, but he's no longer a unicorn in that regard. Each year, there are many taller CBs that are entering the draft, so it's not like some team will draft him high because of his traits alone.

I don't think he's done much to warrant more than a late round selection. He's an average athlete at the position, and doesn't make many plays on the football. He's jumped out filling on run support on the edge, but his tackling in space has been an issue for him the past two seasons.

I'm with you. I would love to see him return. You can never have too many proven CBs on your roster. Morrison & Mickey are great building blocks to have at your disposal for the next two to three years, but they can't be our only options moving forward into 2023. Lewis is there as well, but he's lost about 80% of his snaps this year since the third or fourth game, and I don't believe the staff views him as an every down player. Yes, he has two picks... but snap counts always tell the truth.

In terms of soon-to-be 5th and 6th year seniors, I'd want to bring back the following players:

Justin Ademilola
Zeke Correll
Andrew Kristofic
Howard Cross
NaNa Osafo-Mensah
Marist Liufau
Cam Hart
