Does anyone buy beer direct from a local brewery? I'm thinking of getting a growler once per weekend but not sure how it will hold up. Will it stay fresh?

I am jealous that you can already buy Founders Harvest as it hasn't made it here yet.

Soon enough my friend. And no pumpkin beers! But I still have quite a few...

I usually try to drink growlers within a couple days and it's fine. If you're talking about buying it Friday after work and finishing it before you go back to work Monday I'd say you're good. Just my opinion.

Just had a lovely Saturday trip to the beer store and I got out of there for 53 bucks. Here's what I got...

Stone Vertical Epic 22oz (Encore Series 08/08/08)
6 pack Stone Enjoy By
1 Green Flash West Coast IPA
1 Shorts Black Cherry Porter
1 Alaskan BC Hopethermia DIPA
1 Stone Delicious
1 North Peak Hoodoo
1 Founders Harvest Ale
1 Lion Stout
1 Bells Expedition Stout
1 Bells Special Double Cream Stout

Anyone had this stuff? Says it's made in Sri Lanka. Kind of surprised me.

I love growlers.
If they fill it like most places you should drink within a few days of buying and you should finish it within 24 hours of opening it.

Now if they purge it with CO2 and counter pressure fill it, it can last much longer just like a canned or bottled beer but this method more expensive and thus more rare. You still have about the same amount of time to drink it (24 hours) after opening.

Sorry if this is choppy as I am on my phone.

Had the IPA sampler at Yardhouse last night, it included:

- Green Flash Jibe
- Lost Coast Sharkinator
- Yardhouse House IPA
- Sierra Nevada Hop Hunter
- Alpine Duet
- Knees Deep Hoptologist

Have to say the Alpine was my favorite and I didn't really care for the Green Flash.

Nice. I will say that that is Green Flash's worst IPA (it is a session IPA).

I had Alpine Hoppy Birthday and Nelson the past two days. I'm going back to get more Nelson. I enjoyed Hoppy Birthday, but Nelson is the fucking truth.

It was by far one of the worst I've had, ever. The house IPA wasn't very impressive either. I did like the Sierra Nevada also.

I thought Hop Hunter was alright, but it pales in comparison to SN's Torpedo.

Truth

I like Hoppy Birthday and it is probably my favorite IPA under 6% abv but it can't compare to either Nelson or Duet. I really hope that they start distributing Pure Hoppiness and Exponential Hoppiness as well.

Duet was the one of the three i declined to pick up the other day, because it was already an expensive day and I knew I'd be back. I might get 3 bottles between Nelson and Duet. Will they last long? I'm not sure if I want to drink them right away if I don't need to do so.

They should last as long as any other IPA which is to say that best within 30 days of bottling, good within 60 days, and ok up to 90 days. A little past 90 days isn't horrible but the hops really start to fade after the 90 day mark (really the hops start fading earlier than that but by 3 months or so it generally is very noticeable). The general rule with IPAs is that they are meant to be drank soon after purchasing.

As to your particular beers since Alpine just started distributing I would guess that they are pretty fresh, a week or two (or even three or four) probably won't kill them.

Thanks. I picked up a 4 pack of Narwhal from SN. Is this the sort of thing I should try to age? Or is that unnecessary?

Speaking of Alpine, some Hoppy Birthday for me. First half of the 22oz bottle will be from an IPA glass while the second half will go into a tulip glass.

Narwhal can definitely age but it is also very good right after purchase. Aging will most likely change it some (in a good way especially if done properly at cellar temperature and away from light). So if you want age some (I think the longest I have aged Narwhal is about 1 year) do it, if you want to drink it right now, do it. There really is no wrong answer, the key is how long you can avoid drinking it. I have never had a high ABV stout become bad with proper aging (though a few times I preferred it fresh over the aged version) it just brings out different notes. Also some beers really need aging to reach their full potential (Gouden Carolus Cuvee Van De Keizer Blue comes to mind).

I really like my IPA glass for IPAs.

I suppose the problem is I won't have it at cellar temperature. My options are somewhat limited to slightly below room temp and a fridge haha.

Just opened it and I am not disappointed! Thanks for a great suggestion, I highly recommend this one!

That and Enjoy By are the two best new beers I've tried in well over a year... They're also very similar overall... Those mosaic hoops tho, so good. Very glad you enjoyed, I figured everyone would but you know...

So much truth.

I always have a worry that someone won't enjoy one of the beers that I recommend.
