At least 31 dead in Va. Tech shooting rampage
Gunman shot people in a dorm, second building; suspect among dead

BLACKSBURG, Va. - A gunman opened fire in a dorm and classroom at a college in Virginia on Monday, killing at least 30 people in the deadliest campus shooting in U.S. history. The gunman also was killed, and more than a dozen other people were injured.

“Today the university was struck with a tragedy that we consider of monumental proportions,” said Charles Steger, president of Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in Blacksburg, in southwest Virginia. “The university is shocked and indeed horrified.”

The shootings spread panic and confusion at the college, which is popularly known as Virginia Tech. Witnesses reporting students jumping out the windows of a classroom building to escape the gunfire.

Authorities that the gunman killed himself after he shot nearly 50 people at two locations on campus. Twenty-one were confirmed dead, NBC News reported. At least 28 others were injured, at least four of whom were in critical condition, NBC affiliate WSLS-TV in nearby Roanoke reported, quoting local hospital officials.

The name of the gunman, whom witnesses described as a young Asian man wearing a maroon cap and a black leather jacket, was not released. It was not known if he was a student.

The man did not appear to be shooting at random, NBC News’ Pete Williams reported, quoting federal law enforcement officials. He appeared to have specifically targeted the two locations, a co-ed dormitory and a classroom in an engineering building.

Officials told Williams that they were investigating reports that the gunman may have chained the doors of the classroom closed so his victims could not escape.

No terrorism evidence
The university reported shootings at opposite sides of the 2,600-acre campus, beginning at 7:15 a.m. ET at West Ambler Johnston, a co-ed residence hall that houses 895 people.

The campus was under lockdown, with students asked to stay indoors and away from the windows, when authorities got word of gunfire about two hours later at Norris Hall, an engineering building.

Some but not all of the dead were students. One student was killed in the dorm, and the others were killed in the classroom, said Virginia Tech Police Chief W.R. Flinchum.

FBI spokesman Richard Kolko in Washington said there was no immediate evidence to suggest it was a terrorist attack, “but all avenues will be explored.”

Law enforcement officials said the gunman carried two weapons, a 9-mm handgun and a 22-caliber gun, Williams reported.

Until Monday, the deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history was in Killeen, Texas, in 1991, when George Hennard drove his pickup into a Luby’s Cafeteria and shot 23 people to death, then himself.

I am from Central Texas, about 45minutes from Killeen Texas where the other mass shooting took place. I remember when that one happened, I was 12 or so, but man...it really is a needless way for people to die. This is a Tragedy, and Ron Zook is a cockwad!

People are already bringing up the concealed carry law question. I know it was on school grounds which would have negated your ability to carry, but makes you wonder what might have been avoided if there was a "good guy" packing today. :-(

I thought the same thing. I wish more people had concealed weapons. It seems like the bad guys always have one, and the victims don't. I certainly see both sides of the argument on this one, but why is always good people who are left defenseless?

Thanx man, hard to joke on a thread as serious as this. It's just in my nature. If you believe in God, I think ya'll should say a prayer for the families and departed. Worst massacre in history?? Damn!

this is pretty bad. all over the radio and news, all they have is stories from eye witnesses and family members of the departed. Its depressing. say a prayer for those who passed and a prayer that the injured heal 100%

Not quite. It's the worst school shooting in history, but not the worst school massacre. The worst school massacre in history happened back in 1927 and didn't even involve a gun.

Quoting from this story today from the Scripps-Howard news wire, with a tip o' the hat to Tara Servatius who mentioned it tonight on 1110 WBT out of Charlotte, NC...

The massacre at Virginia Tech University Monday ranks as the worst such mass college killing in American history. But it is not the deadliest rampage at a U.S. school.

That terrible distinction belongs to the horror that befell the Bath Consolidated School in Bath Township, Mich. nearly 80 years ago.

On May 18, 1927, school board member Andrew Kehoe went on a rampage apparently triggered by his anger over a property tax that had been levied to build the school. Blaming the tax for pushing his farm into foreclosure, Kehoe killed his wife and torched his farm buildings. He turned next to the school building, where he had surreptitiously hidden dynamite over several weeks, and detonated the explosives.

When rescuers arrived, Kehoe drove to the school and detonated a firebomb he had with him in his car, killing himself and the school superintendent. Most of the 43 others killed in the bombings were children.

Incredible. We're so used to thinking that stuff like this is unique to today, but evil has always been with us, and always will be.

Words fail.

Eternal rest grant unto them O God, and let perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace.

Interesting point. I recently got a visit from a couple of Jehovah's Witnesses who make the same kind of claim--that things are getting worse. I contested this point, however. I just don't know.

As someone that shoots expert with a handgun i'm amazed, but not in a good way. You would expect this type of body count from someone sporting a M4 or sometype of submachine gun. I know they're rumors floating of excutions style shooting but that would explain the unbelievable accuracy this guy presented. The reason I bring this up is that I listned to a cd called Bullet Proof Mind, which is geared to LE and Military fighting units, understanding why so much violence exsists today and what happens when you encounter it. It really makes sense, not why it happened but how it happend, you guys should check it out. Bless every victim and thier families as this is a pain I don't ever want to feel nor would I wish.

I hope the media doesn't run with the 'ban the guns' agenda because of this episode. It is about personal responsibility rather than guns, or types thereof. It could have been a revolver with the amount of time this guy had. I heard someone say that they should limit how much should go into clips. Does that mean he just needs to grab an extra clip when he goes out to kill people. Stupid, just stupid.

If you want to kill mass amounts of people, you don't need guns to do so. Leave it to the PC crowd to limit every freedom there is except freedom of speech and privacy (and you know why privacy is protected).

Well, in Virginia it's their choice. Virginia allows concealed weapons for those of good standing.

He was patient. If you listen to his shots he only fired fast at close range. Otherwise he was patient and accurate. He was not nervous or scared...that made him really deadly.
