If we say he was overrated and using NFL bust as partial backup, how do we reconcile that most of the guys he was throwing to were also busts in the NFL? Does that make them overrated? And if they are overrated, does that make Matt less overrated?
Matt looked great handing off to Reggie Bush and throwing to Dwayne Jarrett while a great defense backed him up. Lots of possessions, easy stats while playing mostly teams with far less talent. It was a different story when the scales were balanced in the NFL. Matt was overrated, and his ego is still cashing checks. There ain't a humble bone in his body. The whole thing just makes me laugh though, if Matt was a good boy he probably wouldn't have spoken about the whole ordeal and left USC looking rosey.

Look I hate USC as much as anyone here, and sure…they had historically talented rosters. But, to act like Matt Leinart was just a serviceable QB and that he was easily replaceable on those teams is absurd. He led those teams. He made the throws. He made that throw to Jarrett in ‘05. He led that drive. You can definitely argue that Wooden misplayed the throw in coverage, but on 4th&9 he hit Jarrett in stride to save the game and their season.

Let’s not let our fandom color how great a QB he was.

Whatever you think of Matt Leinart's ego or his abilities as a quarterback, his number was retired for reasons, and retiring a number is basically the biggest honor a team can bestow on a player. You don't undo that for some wide receiver who - odds are these days - won't even be on the team by junior year. There are 90-something other numbers the kid can choose from.

Yeah, but he can't even gain a half yard running without help. ;)

What happens when Deion's next star transfer QB wants to take his son's retired number?

I always thought that Leinart's career was due to one of the cleanest pocket's any QB has ever had. I never saw that dude under pressure. Thought when T Laws sacked him that it was over. But to his credit, he rallied to make the 4th and 9 throw. Maybe we shouldn't have run a double safety blitz.

I don’t think it was even a good throw. Blown coverage and horrible angles made that play.

I don't think it was a blown coverage. I think it was the call. They played everything tight and were looking to end the game there. High risk scenario as you are vulnerable to the big boundary receiver winning a one-on-one, which is exactly what happened. It looks like a blown coverage because there was no over the top safety help. I don't think it was a difficult throw to make, but it was basically perfect. I don't even think Jarrett had to stutter or slow down. Considering the importance of the situation, hell of a throw.

He was overrated AF anyway. JV QB's could've led that team to a natty.

If Leinart is overrated, following this logic, Brady Quinn is even moreso.
I don't think Quinn was drafted 10th overall.

Leinart was an idiot who tried to lose. He took off lumbering towards the end zone with no timeouts. He also fumbled the ball. Leinart gets saved as the mistakes cancelled each other out.

Leinart tried again as he looked at nothing and nobody except Jarret when the ball was snapped. He also mostly looked at Jarret they first lined up. The mistake was Weis not calling any of his 3 timeouts before that play and reminding them to keep it in front of them. If Jarret is tackled at midfield with about 90 seconds left, then an SC with no timeouts is still an underdog.

Wooden could have blocked it with his helmet if he had turned. But the free safety had moved away from that side of the field and took himself out of the play.

In short, Leinhart was a good but not great qb who could not have been higher than the third best in the 2005 season.

The number of times this has replayed in my mind... It's my Buckner moment.

Leinart can suck it.

Na, Brady was better. He had less to work with. He certainly didn't have a Heisman winning RB taking the pressure off him and Lendale White was no slouch either. Brady had some pretty good receivers, Shark was probably better than Jarrett, but I feel like USC certainly had a deeper group overall. Defense? USC definitely better at most positions other than Safety. Brady did more with less. I think Brady had the longer NFL career too, he just got stuck on a couple shitty teams like the Browns.

You can just see Chad's greasy, corny finger prints all over USC. Good luck with that stuff my dude.

Feel like Chad is similar to BK in that while he certainly elevated ND recruiting and outreach, he most def had a ceiling. Running around in a leprechaun costume will only get you so far.

The reason why Marcus was like, "Nah man, we're good- byeeee."

Bitch ass.
