I know I've said it before in this thread but I just can't help but laugh at the imagined reaction and outcry from the masses if Notre Dame proposed changing the rivalry in the 2000s when Carroll's teams were bending them over and going in dry for ten years

F'm.......The only reason they are willing to talk again is because they have more wiggle room now. No matter how they tried to spin it, the only people buying that the divorce was ND's fault is USC and it's fans. The national media also called out USC and Riley. I hated to see the game end, but if we don't play them again, I'm fine with that. ND will survive.

This makes the most sense to me. USC didn’t want to just play “earlier in the season”. They want it to be week 0. They also don’t want to travel to South Bend, so they don’t care if it’s in Mexico City. But to ND, it’s not a continuation of the series unless it’s a home and home.

What still boggles my mind is the sheer stupidity of the SC folks telling ND that they want the game in Mexico so USC can sell the tv rights to Netflix. The Big Ten heard about this and reminded Troy that they sold their home games and soul for money already. All to go 8-4

Exactly, 100%. He especially has a thing about hating on ND. Honestly, when watching the YouTube videos about anything ND related, he always looks completely uninterested. I cannot wait to see how he reacts to ND dominating every week.

This whole USC thing has been comedy watching their athletic department keep changing their story.

First it was "We want to play ND earlier and they refuse to do that." Then it came out that we actually agreed to that as long as we could keep the game midseason for a couple of years since our early season games were already set for the near future.

Then it was "well actually we want to play ND earlier NOW and they refuse to do that." And then it came out that no, actually, we were open to talking about that, we just had to pay a bunch of money to cancel other games but we were considering it.

Well USC couldn't have that, so then suddenly it was "Well we offered week 0 in mexico city and ND refused!" But then oops, they hadn't actually gotten a waiver from the NCAA to allow that, and the ~9 month lead time was way too short to plan an international game.

Then finally they admitted to being the ones to back out of the series, but "only because of the ND playoff clause that we totally just found out about." And then it comes out that every athletic department in the country had known about it for 6 months.

They wanted this game gone. Cohen and Riley had been talking about it for over a year. They got what they wanted. Now their alumni and donors are pissed, they're the laughing stock of the CFB world, and they had to float this story to that LA Times mouthpiece they totally don't pay to put out USC fluff pieces to try and save face before crawling back to us to reschedule the series. Bunch of clowns.

Yup. Add in that the "Riley runs away from tough opponents" didn't even start with us. That was the word on why he chose SC over heading to the SEC with either Oklahoma or LSU. Then one of the first things he tried to do when he got to SC was cancel the LSU game (he failed).

I'll give their PR credit (and Riley specifically) in one respect: They got everyone in the media to parrot a non-existent claim that ND's position was "anytime, anywhere". In reality, MF said in a presser that he'd play the series at any time in the season. The "anywhere" part was something that Riley put out there months later to mock ND because SC was losing the PR campaign so badly. It immediately stuck out to me because I know that keeping it a home and home series is important to ND.

The collective delusion I continue to see from SC fans online needs to be studied. Saying ND ran from the rivalry makes no sense in any world. The rivalry we’ve dominated for the last 15 years? Why would we try to “duck” a team whose teeth we regularly kick in?

Just the lamest, most self-aggrandizing and delusional fanbase imaginable.
