One-dimensional teams are not legit on offense.
Clemson yes, but we lost and our defensive line and OL got MANHANDLED the majority of the the game.
So basically, the game would be a toss up, but considering how porous ND has been defensively at times, particularly early in the last two games, yeah, I would say that UM deserves to be ranked ahead of ND. It likely does not matter in the long run, but right now, they ARE playing better than ND...ever so slightly.
What game did you watch? I don't think either of our lines got MANHANDLED. The offense in particular was at a tremendous schematic disadvantage. THE ND STAFF let Clemson load the box with as many as 9 men and didn't even make adjustments, (like they did yesterday when Navy tried the same thing.)
Yes the Clemson defensive line was great, and they won their share of battles. But I think it is pretty clear that the disadvantage in South Carolina was more the six inches between the coaches ears!
And as far as figuring out what the selection committee will or won't do; what happened to the preponderance of evidence we saw last year that the committee isn't going to reward blow-out wins with weak schedules? These top dog teams are going to have a tough time adjusting to actually having to play somebody to actually make it to the playoffs. I personally expect schizophrenic, bi-polar team behaviors.
This may manifest itself in wilder poll results, particularly the coaches poll.
And it may result in one team playing like world-beaters one week, and someone's bitches the next.
It all should be interesting! Especially for schools with the talent, that are used to not playing anyone!
Northwestern will lose more, I have no doubt. They barely beat Ball State, ffs. How does setting up noon games against opponents from the west coast not apply to the defense? These guys were playing football when many of them would ordinarily still be sleeping. You don't think that has an effect on how those teams play? Yeah, they're playing well, but it's also inflated by what how the schedule is set up.
I agree, but the converse has been true for west coast teams for
years! If anything advances in medicine and technology have helped the transition either direction. But in the old days more than one time zone was brutal, for sure!
There is a vast difference between being a legitimately well-coached, disciplined team like ND was under Lou and a legitimately explosive offense. That was also 27 years ago, or eons ago.
The simple fact is that Michigan and ND have both played fairly soft schedules, but Michigan has a defense that IS playing MUCH better than ND is.
I mean, Texas, GT and Navy are NOT good wins, and Clemson is only a good loss if they win the ACC, period.
