I'm not trying to make excuses for this team or the coaching staff - But... this team (right now) on offense is loaded with sophomores. I get that they should be seasoned/coached enough to be playing better but, they are still young.

I do not see any 'heart' in this team especially on offense. Defense is actually playing decent but I agree with some that it is Jekyll/Hyde and the Red-Zone needs tightening up.

When Pyne threw that ball low in the Second Half (?) to Styles (?) I believe near the goal line, there was not even any effort to go down and get the ball. Just a light jog as if it wasn't even thrown his way. I guess because of the year the Irish are having, little things like that can get up in a fan's craw.

Pyne is getting hammered on here after being thrust into a position where Buchner should be - that's on the coaches for not having Pyne coached correctly. Angeli is not in for a reason - and then we question, or have to believe that the coaches know better and even that is questioned after watching Rees calling some of the most questionable plays and MF allowing them.

a.) Is this a rebuilding year and we (as fans) are blind to that?
b.) Is this a bad team?
c.) Is this just a young and learning team?
d.) Is the coaching staff in over their heads?

Special teams won that game yesterday - period.

I saw that too and had to stop myself from yelling at my screen for him to dive.

To me, it doesn't reflect well on Stuckey. Not only did Styles, who was supposed to be a good receiver, not dive for that ball, he let one go straight through his hands too. And on top of that, despite Pyne often having days to sit in the pocket and find an open receiver, you never see our guys work their way open after their initial route. That legitimately could be a driving force for our offense. A strong run game forcing teams to keep more linebackers on the field and a TE that needs to be double covered should mean there are a lot of 1 on 1 match ups for receivers. Teams can't play off coverage because Pyne will take the free access throws and they shouldn't be able to play press man because we should be able to have receivers that work their way open with all the time the OL gives Pyne.

Why not all four?

- It's a rebuilding year. I think we underestimated that and assumed all the question marks would turn into plus signs. Some have, others haven't.

- I don't think we're a "bad" team per se, we're pretty talented beyond QB/WR. But as others point out this team doesn't really display the traits of a winning team either. There's no swagger, minimal fire, too many careless mistakes, when we need to make a big play on defense, we often don't. Losing often begets more losing and I think we're seeing a bit of that too.

- Yes. Especially on offense this team is really young. They will (hopefully) learn and get better.

- Yep. First-time head coach. So much turnover of assistants. Again hopefully they learn and improve (and find a new OC next year) but it'll take a little time.

The way things are shaping up, they'll get to six wins and then they'll have one game left and it's USC.

Agree on Angeli, they need to find ways to get him on the field. Both so he's got a little experience if Pyne gets hurt and to get a little more sense of what you have with him for next year. Direct snaps to the tight end and handoffs up the middle ain't it.
Right there with you.

We all know how valuable a bowl game is with the extra practices. Pyne SHOULD beat BC and Navy. Then maybe we’ll see proper changes.

Then again, wtf do I know.

Defense gives up too many chunk and explosive plays. Other than the few of those a game they are prone to, solid effort for the most part. Linebackers get washed out on those big runs.
Offensively, I’m glad to see Pyne take some deeper shots. He’s missed a few big plays by not putting some air underneath it to give our guys a chance. There are opportunities there, we need to capitalize. Styles with a few inexplicable drops, one really bad yesterday. Seems this team is a couple of plays away each game from being a good team. Still frustrating to watch. Go Irish!

The defense is low-key not very good. Look up its RZ stats this season...

Some combination of 1-3 + e.) Marcus Freeman is a first time HC and his starting QB went down for the year in week 2.

I hate to say it but I almost wish both games are over at half time so we can let them see what Angeli has
I think that wish will be granted sooner or later. On paper, ND should beat SU, Navy & BC. I won’t be shocked if they only win one of those and finish 5-7.

This is the one smart thing Tommy did yesterday. Every team should have an option like this instead of sacrificing your QB for a 3rd/4th and inches sneak play.

While I agree pyne has been hot garbage, substituting a qb with a freshman qb and comparing a running back and wr are completely different
Right. Go look what All Everything true freshman Cade Culubnik (Sp?) did yesterday for Clemson. He basically ran read option and threw some high percentage passes that still almost got picked.

If that’s the case he’s reducing his market value.

I cannot believe that Freeman and Rees didn't bring in a transfer quarterback.

They completely failed every kid on this roster by not doing so. This team has zero chance in competing with most programs this season due to the complete black hole at just one position. Yes the roster is flawed, but is VASTLY superior to every team we've played so far besides OSU.

I truly believe just a competent quarterback has us at 6-1 and maybe 7-0.

BK/ Tommy left the cabinets bare in critical positions. The reasons for this teams struggles are because of the lack of recruiting. Marcus is doing what he can with this team and the defense is putting the team in position to win every game. Like people have said if we had Coan we are 5-1. Unfortunately it’s gonna take 2 years at minimum to fix this but it may be too late.

Yes to all four.

We assumed the coaches could coach these players in to being good and that hasn’t happened.

This team is bad. There is 0 attention to detail. No one giving an all out effort. Players making the same mistake over and over and goes for the coaches too.

Yes the DB’s are getting a lot of time, the WR’s are getting a lot of time.

Our coaching for their experience overall is just not that good.

Mason/McCoullgh have been good.
Hard to tell about Stuckey. But you can’t make chicken salad out of chicken shit. He gets somewhat of a pass.

Everyone else has been blah. I understand this is Freeman’s first year and I though he would do better with the resources he had. (I expected to much from him obviously) And I am ok being wrong here. But to me it doesn’t look like he is learning. That’s what worries me.

A transfer quarterback would've made this a great spring board season. They would've finished 10-3 or 9-4 at worst, recruiting would be sky high, critical positions would still be wide open for freshman to come in a contribute, and most importantly: no one would be questioning Freeman's ability to be a head coach.

Instead the program is in shambles.

I think the only overall improvement that I've seen is the OL but that is minimal.

Postgame Thoughts:
1) I have never seen so much negativity after a win.
2) My beef with Pyne is his height and I saw this in the B&G game this year. He is under 6ft. while our starting OL are over 6ft.: Fisher 6'6'', Lugg 6'7'', Correll 6'3'', Patterson 6'5'', and Alt 6'8''. I really think he is missing guys because he cannot see over our OL.
3) Not only is Mayer the best TE in college football he is ND's Mr. Reliable receiver. Not all of Pyne's throws are spot on, but he makes an effort to catch the ball. None of our other WR's make an effort like Mayer does. Single coverage, double coverage, I don't care the coverage throw Mayer the ball until I see another WR willing to step up.
4) I feel bad for Estime and his fumbling.
5) I roll with Diggs as our #1 RB he had a quiet solid game yesterday.
6) #FreeColzie# when in the hell is Colzie going to see the field?
7) Foskey- hell of a game.
8) Defense still gave up too many big plays.
9) Our LB position is the same as our WR position. I want to see the youth get more PT at our LB position. Our veteran guys are not stepping up.
10) Brandon Joseph is not going to get an opportunity every time to return a punt, but whenever he does I'd like to see an effort instead of a fair catch.

Go Irish!!

A lot of talk on the board about the QB/getting a QB transfer. If Jack Coan had another year left I would've kept him (I don't care if Buchner or Pyne would've transferred). The Buchner injury happened at a bad time in the season. As far as starting Angeli over Pyne I would've pulled Pyne out last week vs. Stanford. Pyne looked good vs UNC and BYU and Cal was his first start after the Buchner injury.

The negativity is the 4 FGs (1 missed) which were attainable TDs.. that equates to a 19 point difference which I will give them one FG (dropped TD by Mayer), so a 16 point difference. Which would have made the final 60-21.... not to mention 0 points in the third qtr. I don't want to be negative towards kids, UNLV played their butt's off... but it was a lack-luster performance by the Irish - at home.

I don't know - with his size and speed, with an accurate QB he could/would be a dynamic player...
Just about every decent P5 team has one receiver similar to him, and the good ones have several based on what he has shown so far. He isnt exactly running away from people either.

IDK about that one.
You think SU has more talent from top to bottom than ND? I’m not saying ND will win the only team they looked to be inferior to on paper was OSU. When they actually played the games, another result ensued due to myriad of things.
