Maybe 1/3 in footprint, but not in importance. I looked at the history of the building to get some extra perspective because I honestly didn't know what the East Wing's function was aside from being an office for the First Lady (But not so much in modern times). It was nicknamed Siberia apparently because it's so far removed from the politics of the Oval Office and the West Wing. Aside from the First Lady offices that were mentioned it also has the emergency bunker under it, and it has the family theatre where Clinton watched the Super Bowl and Nixon watched The Sting. That's pretty much it. Considering they've said the First Lady offices will be rebuild in the new facility, we're not really losing anything of importance. I assume the bunker will remain or may even get updated as part of this.
It's not about that stuff and I think many are all for improving the WH. And hell, if it needed a better ballroom (or in fact, a proper one), then so be it. As GATTACA! stated it's how went about it like a Dictator and with no regard for Architectural aesthetic.
And more importantly, why does a President even need a new I'm sure heavily fortified bunker (although I'm sure there are many highly-secured hiding spots for an American President for sure in existence) at the White House implying he's such a bad President (let's just say Dictator) that he needs to have something like this in place to protect himself. Can you imagine Ronald Reagan feeling that he needed a bunker in place as a President because he's afraid to be attacked by his own people, but that's what this implies for DJT.
