I gotta say...this doesn't seem like a supper huge deal. I know it all sounds bad but the police trump up charges using assaulting an officer all the time. I would put money on it getting dropped. Maybe the cops were giving Tommy the business and that's what got Carlo fired up. Just the fact that they used pepper spray seems like overkill.

you seem to have a very ignorant view of police work then. Attitudes like that will only get you in my more trouble when it is unnecessary.

Is that a threat?

Several of my family members are cops. I'm familiar with how their departments are run.

You don't think police departments respond to the desires of their constituencies? The permanent residents of South Bend are increasingly alienated from the wealthy and entitled student body at ND. There's probably no way to verify it, but I'd be willing to bet all my vBucks that townie parties don't get raided nearly as often as off-campus student parties.

You don't think police departments are sensitive to the kinds of citations which generate the most revenue? Ever been dinged by a speed trap in a small town?

I'm thinking the same thing. I mean they only blew .11 and .12, I find it hard to imigine they were too out of control? Pepper Spray seems like overkill on a 19 year kid who is suspected of drinking at a party.

Mike Floyd also was arrested 2 times prior to his DUI and was on probation!

Has Tommy been arrested before? Is he on probation?

SERIOUSLY PEOPLE!

Also, not to mention Mike Floyd could have KILLED people drinking and driving.

But he didn't...

If Tommy is thrown off the team fine, but don't kick him out of the university... Everyone makes mistakes, especially in college when they are drinking.

I don't agree with wooly, lax, ironman and others opioions but i do agree with them that this is about more then football. And if you even look at it in the football way this still puts a bad vibe in the locker room

The football locker rooms I've been in, both High School and College, would have sided with Tommy and Carlo. They would have seen this as a situation where they bust their a$$, and then get harassed by the local cops for having a few drinks. The bad vibe is between Notre Dame and the local police. This is even going to make it worse. Most of the alumni are going to side with ND.

You're right, that would seem to be difficult to prove either way, hence not a convincing arguement. Half my high school baseball team got suspended/kicked off the team from a party bust. I remember parties getting broken up all the time back then. I went to HS in the building at the corner of Angela and US 31, soon to be relocated. I would agree that it seems like from what folks are posting that enforcement has become more stringent though. Don't forget that there's likley going to be a complaint from a fellow citizen to contact law enforcement to the scene of party for whatever reason too, not just the police cruising looking for parties. I'm sure that happens occasionally, but most would logically occur as the result of a noise complaint or something like that.

Agreed. Residents are probably more likely to call in a noise complaint against an off-campus student party than against neighbors they know and have a relationship with. I think it's more likely the result of acrimony by the residents of SB toward the University than it is SBPD simply having it out for students.

Either way, the phenomenon is real, and it's root cause is the poor relations between SB's local populace and the University. Hopefully ND's recent efforts toward rehabilitating SB will improve things, but I'm not optimistic.

Here's another example: You rarely see a black ND athlete get busted off campus in South Bend for drinking. I believe that's because the black athletes go to the black bars- or to parties on the near northwest side- and the cops stay away from harassing those places because they know it is not as safe as busting the white kids in their rental houses. They want the easy bust, and unfortunately ND students keep giving it to them.

To be clear, I think this has more to do with the acrimony of the locals toward ND kids than it does with the SBPD having it out for students. On that sir, I would tend to agree with you. That was my point as well, it is the trigger that illicits the call to police in the first place, which once police and students interact peope get angry at each other, and it snowballs down the hill from there.

I'm going to disagree with you here:

The area where the bust occurred has become pretty gentrified. It is being filled with ND professors and wealthy families, most of whom have an affinity to ND and its students. So, you've got upper middle class families in close proximity to students. The students are loud. The parents want to put their kids to bed. They call the police.

The big difference is that up until around 1990, the police would break up the party without arresting anybody. Today, they bust them.

So all of them do?

There are FARRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
more cops that do good things (save lives, lock up bad guys) and do their job, than those that don't.

Again, I get the frustration. When I was 21 in college, I didn't like them either...but then, something magical happened...

I GREW UP

I am not a huge fan of the prorities of the South Bend PD either, but if the report in this video are accurate, then it appears to be Rees' fault and the officer's actions don't sound surprising.

MIDDAY UPDATE: Notre Dame players arrested -- southbendtribune.com

Looks like a cameo by John Goodman.

Stay classy Goodman.

I also enjoyed the footage of a box of ziplock bags and the dog. That's embarrassing that news station would run that.

That reporter is not very good.

Difference between good boys and bad boys- are that the bad boys get caught.

Two things.

In my time following ND football, I have seen and heard a lot of stories about cops acting... lets say.. 'over zealously' regarding ND kids at keggers. It's a little much and leads me to think that there must be some kind of breakdown with messaging coming from ND faculty to the police.

Second, if it's true that Tommy had to be dragged down and fought back while being arrested, I could totally understand if that was the end of his tenure on the team.

It's part of what makes ND different, we don't tolerate Irish football players kicking cops and being arrested for battery. It sucks, I may not be a fan of Tommy as a QB but I am a fan of his as a person.

Postscript: I think it's a little funny that Tommy tried to run away... his escapability didn't serve him too well in this instance either huh?

What did goodman do? Video blocked at my school.

The lady that was reporting "at the scene" knocked on his door and he pretty much blew off every question she asked, and at one point said he didn't know why he was even being interviewed. He ended it by saying he had to call his coach to get clearance to conduct an interview and shut the door.

He got interviewed by a reporter who knocked on his door, the door of the house where the party was. Seemed disgusted by the whole thing: The bust. The media. Said he was going to call Kelly. Shut the door.

Goodman did nothing wrong.

He was polite and said he didn't want to do the interview, reporter acted like a douche and kept on asking the questions. He said 'have a nice day' and closed the door.

"Stay classy Goodman"? Get a grip.

I've personally talked to some cops in SB, and they told me that they do hate the Notre Dame students. It's nothing new for local cops to go after students at the big universities but talking to these cops, they really did despise ND students.

I've never actually been pepper sprayed, but I can pretty much guarantee that if it does happen to me, well, I'm going to yell and gyrate-- police and bystanders be damned.
