These are Michigan fans, GITF. I was physically assaulted several times during my last trip to Ann Arbor. Leo's lucky to be alive.

I will never go to Ann Arbor again in my life unless it's to watch the big house burn the ground. I got hit with full beer cans, had glass bottles thrown at us, beer sprayed at us, it's a war zone there. Those people are d!cks.

I'm glad they aren't all dicks.

I applaud the ones who stepped up to help.

Luckily, he was in the hospital and monitored during that 4th quarter. But in all seriousness, he's lucky to be in the UM hospital. It is a fantastic hospital/med school with more than a few ND alums.

I've been to the "Big House" multiple times and have never had a bit of trouble with Michigan fans. Don't get me wrong, I hate Michigan football and MSU for that matter, but they have always been nice fans to me and my family. In most fan bases you have a percentage of jerks.

Yep because several idiots are the entire fanbase.... If you sat by the student section then you were asking for it because the students get drunk every game just like every other school.

Go to columbus for a game. I got in a physical altercation with some asswhipe messing with my family. I've been to that sh!thole several times and had morons try to start stuff with me or my group. You can hold a grudge once things happen to you multiple times.

It was our first night game and everyone was pretty rowdy. Every school has idiots. You had one bad experience. Get over it.

Maybe "at least we're not as bad as Suckeye fans" makes you feel better, but I'd be embarrassed if an opposing fan was assaulted at a ND game. I've never read about anything remotely close to that happening at ND.

Yeah, doesn't mesh with my experience, either. I attended the game, walked with and through the students to the game and back through campus with the students after the game. Everyone was very cordial. I only saw two real azzholes the entire time, one a drunk Michigan fan hamming it up for an ESPN camera crew and the other a Notre Dame fan who spent 75% of his time with his back to the field taunting the Michigan fans in the section behind him.

My brother has attended games across the country and said it was the second most friendly crowd to visitors he had seen, second only to Texas where fans stopped him after the game (a UT loss) and thanked him for coming to Austin.

We were sitting about 15 seats away from the man who had the heart attack, saw the whole thing.

Find an article or even a blog comment about someone who was physically assaulted at an ND game. In the 7 years I was on campus between 2002-2009, and the 2 years since I graduated, I've never read or heard about that happening at our games.

ND is universally recognized as one of the most hospitable places for fans of opposing teams. I've experienced first hand, and heard more accounts than I can remember, how your trashy drunken fan base assaults opposing fans.

But hey... your fans and OSU fans do it, so everyone must do it, right?

I grew up outside of ann arbor and have been back for multiple games. I have had full beer cans thrown at me at almost every game. The majority of fans are ok but there is a huge minority that are just bad people.

Is that how the rules for holding a grudge work? Thanks for clearing that up. If you want to keep posting here, I suggest you tone down the attitude I've been noticing in your posts since the game.

I don't think she was at the night game. She is also a mother of two young children. I sure as hell hope they weren't there.

I agree with Whiskey on that point. ND fans are really good. I go to games every year (Home and away) and I've never seen a ND fan become aggressive and attack anyone. Most ND fans, in my experience, are very good natured. Not to mention highly intelligent..hehe

I'm sorry I'm not giddy that my family has been harassed a number of times in columbus. This is a sensitive topic.

As for all of you guys. I have NEVER seen anything happen to any opposing fans except one time, a guy was wearing an ohio jersey and everyone was booing him. I have my own tailgate, I don't park at the golf course. The golf course is where the major drunkards go. As for inside the stadium, once again, student sections are like that. The East side of the stadium is where you will meet some of the nicest people. Usually older alums are around there. The West side of the Stadium is where I sit, Section 23 on the 50yd line, row 45. Very rare I see an opposing fan there. The South endzone is a mix between opposing fans and Michigan fans: that's the rough section other than the student section.

Maybe when The Big House expands in a few years to the upper-deck in the South endzone (yes, there are plans being drawn up, confirmed by my friend who works as stadium usher. Dave Brandon told him during the annual usher's meeting) you guys will have better experiences. The upper deck is where the opposing fans would be relocated (also confirmed by AD Brandon).

I am a recent graduate and never saw anyone assaulted at an ND game. Not even close. We had many opposing fans sneak into the student section and they all enjoyed their time there. At most, there's some good-natured ribbing and at most a glare. On the other hand, I was in Michigan's student section for one quarter and had two full cups of some soft drink thrown at me. While I don't claim that Michigan is the only place that does this crap, as another poster said, one assault is one too many. The example set by ND and Nebraska fans should be emulated by all (most SEC schools are also surprisingly hospitable - I've been to Sanford and the Razorbacks). And this story proves not all Michigan fans are dbags. Just 90% of them.

To be fair, MSU is even worse. Mostly because their students get even more retarded than the Michigan students. They don't restrict themselves to throwing beer cans and the occasional punch. They engage in full-out brawls. However, during the games, opposing fans are put in a separate section, cutting down on assaults.

Really? That wasn't my first "attack" in Ann Arbor. I'm pretty sure I've been to the 'shoe and never had a full can of beer thrown at me, never had a ND fan hit me with anything, I've been to happy valley and never was accosted by a PENN ST fan. The only bad experience I've ever had was at Michigan. Every michigan fan says the same thing "you should go to colombus!!!" No face it, the Michigan fan base consists heavily of douchebags. If you don't like it stay on your own board.

Thanks for sticking up for me guys I appreciate it, but honestly, U of M is the ONLY place I have ever encountered anything like this, and I wasn't by the student section. I also wasn't at the night game. I won't ever go back to Ann Arbor, although I did only go once for a ND/Mich game the others I tagged along with friends, one was OSU and one was IL.

If by that you mean showing up wearing a Navy Blue ND hoodie and green beads, and walking to our seats and then leaving before the 2nd qtr and my friend needing 3 stitches above his eyebrow, then yeah, I guess we do.

Did this happen outside or inside the stadium?

I believe you, but you've had at least three posters in this thread confirm that they were physically assaulted while attending a UM game in Ann Arbor. I appreciate that you want to defend your school, and that your anecdotal evidence conflicts with what you're reading here, but we're not lying.

My first and only trip to Ann Arbor was in 2003. We got blown out 38-0. On my walk back to the student bus, (1) I took an empty beer bottle to the head; (2) a full beer can hit me in the shoulder; and (3) a solo cup of beer soaked my ND jersey. I could write it off as a fluke if I didn't constantly hear similar stories from other ND fans.

As for inside the stadium, once again, student sections are like that.

ND's isn't. There were fans from opposing teams in our student section all the time. They're always treated respectfully.

Just as you're inclined to defend your school when you read a post like this, I don't appreciate you painting ND with the same brush, and trying to dismiss our experiences as if it happens everywhere. ND's not like that, and it doesn't happen at our game.

More importantly, I think most of the posters here would be embarrassed, and would apologize if something like that ever happened to an opposing fan. You came here, to our board, and told us to "get over it".

Unless you are in the student section for every single football game, and ask every single opposing fan if anything happened to them like that, you don't know for sure.

BCSorBust confirmed that he'd had a similar experience. All five of my sophomore year roommates can confirm my story, because they got hit just like I did. I've never been back since, nor will I ever return, so that's all I can offer from first-hand experience. I can tell you that a lot of fellow students went to UM for their first road game (early in season, close drive, etc.) and never return after that.

You and Wolverine1997 are mostly polite, and you can express coherent thoughts on a message board, so I have no doubt you're well removed from whatever element is assaulting opposing fans. But it definitely happens.

That's the funny thing about anecdotal evidence. You've got two other posters corroborating my experience (quite closely in fact) in this thread, while you and MGoBlue are disputing it because you've never seen it.

I should point out that that wasn't your initial argument. You basically said it happens at every school, and that we should get over it.

There's no way to prove it definitively without conducting a study that none of us has the time, means, or motivation to conduct.
