Apologies if a TJ thread already exists (couldn't find one). Anyways, he gone. Being hired as DPGC/DBs coach at Texas:

Looks like our boy Freeman's 1st order of business will be to fill the safeties coach role. What do we know about likely candidates? How is Cinci's guy?

Cooks will almost certainly have consideration. Steeples name has been tossed around but that’s just speculation

A defensive staff of Freeman, Mickens, Steeples, Elston would be insane on the recruiting trail. Could prob say the same thing about Cooks though. Hard to imagine this not being the best recruiting staff we've had on the defensive side of the ball in a couple decades.

COMPLETELY forgot he was on the staff as an analyst. Wouldn't mind this at all.

Agree -- early Diaco days were pretty good, but this can be epic. VERY excited about this. Stars are aligning for a 2023 and/or 2024 run if they can put together a strong 2021 defensive class and stay the current course on offense.

Cooks is from the Dallas area and should be a great recruiter of Texas talent. Too much talent here for ND not to be in the game for some, and they have no problem leaving the state (see OSU, Alabama, OU, Stanford, etc.).

Georgia is the new Texas if we’re going to target in part based of recruiting prowess/links. More elite recruits per recruit

No doubt ND having success in GA, and that's awesome as it, too, is talent rich. Just frustrating living here in metro Dallas seeing out of state programs snatching the best recruits. Partly due to weakness of UT since Mack was run off, but also things changed when TAMU opted for SEC...those schools flew in like buzzards on roadkill. Just hope if Cooks remains he can establish some momentum here. Ever notice how many NFL QBs played HS ball in Texas?

Robert Steeples. He was being considered for the CB spot that Mickens eventually took. Former NFL cornerback who has coached some top level St. Louis talent including Jordan Johnson and Jakailin Johnson out of De Smet Jesuit High School where he is the HC. This year they already have eight kids committed to play D1 football.

Cooks to me will be the frontrunner. He's already on staff. If he jives with Freeman, that would be my guess.

Didn't he take De Smet from like 2-?? to like 2x-2 or something like that?

I think he's very intriguing, but it would be a good jump.

He could also you would think be a easy first call for Elston if Elston goes the route of Purdue.

Wasn’t Cooks our TE and ST coach a few years ago?

Can't imagine a scenario where he takes an assistant coach position at Purdue over ND, given the choice of course.
