Thanks guys...last several comments helped. If anyone could pick apart some of the lineplay [O-line] that would help a lot too. Ex. who was Lynch beating? Who Nix? Who Ishaq? Did any O-line guy stand out?

In no way am I disrespecting your opinion, I just disagree. If you told me that Nix could require a double team, or get 5-7 yards in the backfield for even half the snaps he's on the field, I would take it every day of the week. If the DL can push the line of scrimmage back 3-5 yards on every snap, we win. That's been one of the biggest problems in recent years with our defense. The guy is a stud. I think he played well today. I like what I saw on the field from him and I think he looks a lot better as far as his conditioning. Just my opinion. Mike Frank and other mods (ISD) were also very impressed by what they saw from him today.

Ok. I will say I watch as a coach of this exact defense. That is why I am so critical. Second of all any time a line is 5-7 yards deep and still engaged he is causing problems.

Lynch beat just about every one of them...he made Trevor Robinson look silly with a swim move, then crushed Hendrix

Those are the guys that gave me nightmares as a coach.

Give me a superior athlete, and I will coach him down to average.

I know, right??

You hate to take away a strong suit, but look at an athlete like Vick... While his scrambling surely made him household name, it wasn't until this past year that he REALLY killed it, and its because he LEARNED to stay in the pocket, read defenses, and use BOTH of those to THEN use his scrambling ability.

Now before anyone goes all crazy, I am not even coming close to comparing Vick with Golsen. I am merely pointing out a likeness in sytles..

My overall opinion:

Hendrix was very impressive. His arm strength and quick release are NFL caliber. He needs to work on his read and some other things but he is impressive. He also looked very good on the zone read plays.

Golson is GOING to be a stud. He is a very exciting player but raw. Cannon is an understatement when describing his arm strength.

Cierre Wood looked very good today. Hit the holes when they were there and was patient when he needed to be. I think he is going to have a special season if he can stay healthy.

Alex Welch continues to be forgotten by many. He is a stud TE in this system. very good hands and very athletic. He and Eifert will be the one, two punch in my opinion, while Koyack sits a year.

Aaron Lynch- better than I expected. Say what you want to about not over reacting and so on.... but the kid is a talent that we havent seen on the field in South Bend in awhile.

Ishaq is FAST off the ball. His pursuit is really impressive. Needs to add some strength. Glad he made it in for the spring.

Danny Spond and Kendall Moore are going to contribute this year. Moore is fast but relies to much on his speed and takes lousy angles.

Lo Wood and Bennett Jackson are impressive to me.

All in all, the defense was better but that should have been expected. There was no Michael Floyd and the timing off the offense was not amazing. Conditions played a factor im sure.

Im also eager to see the tempo at which this offense operates this year. Im also interested to see which one of these in-coming freshman will step up at WR. I think TJ, Floyd and Riddick are there but the rest is wide open.

** I also want to point out that Bruce Heggie looked pretty good. I have been fairly critical of Heggie and the late offer he recieved from this staff, but he looked pretty good.**

Dever, Martin, and Cave all did well. TRob had one bad play against Lynch, but overall I think he did OK.. Dever had a great block on the Riddck reverse, and coming from an offensive lineman, making flush contact on a little CB at full speed is tough to do.

I watched a little bit of Nichols and he seemed to hold his own.

Didn't watch too much of the backup line though, so somebody else would have to chime in.

ND-W-R: this is the sort of thing which tells me a lot. If Cave and the Tackles played generally well [and they are supposed to be the heart of the O, since TRob has disappointed a bit even in his own admission], then Lynch having such a big game means to me that Lynch is just as for real as we hoped and that the studs on the O-line are still a strength.

I have had an unpopular opinion for a long time that several of our youngsters are going to start eventually this season, maybe even at the beginning. Lynch and Nix are two likely ones, although I believe that Tuitt is going to blow everyone away even more. Thank goodness Danny Spond is as good as I hoped, but Ben Counsell is coming too. And most unpopular, Hendrix, or maybe even Golson, takes the QB position by mid-season or earlier. Why?

I listen very carefully to everything that Kelly says. He cannot wait to get "his" system's QB on the field. And he cannot stop himself from wowing about the elite defenders coming in. This is even while he doesn't want to pump them up too much. And well...there are a lot of other reasons. All this is optimism, because I believe that we're VERY good whether the newbies would play or not. But I smell something BIG coming.

one word, YES! Brindza is going to be bombing the ball for us, on the rare occasion we have to punt!

Out of all the Recievers I thought Toma did the best beside that one drop over the middle which might have been caused by Lynch getting his hands in the way of the ball when it was released from the QB thus messing up Toma's timing. Also, maybe I'm wrong here but I though Lombard did pretty good as well. Also to chime in on delt1147 and Irish Man3's discussion about Nix, I would say you are both right in a way. If Nix can get 5-7 yards deep in the backfield and severely disrupt the play, it is a good thing. However, if he goes that deep and makes a huge open hole in the middle of the defense without disrupting the play it can be bad since that means he overpenatrated. Just like when a D-end runs in the backfield and totally misses a running back and therefore leaves a gaping hole for the running back to run through

He looked great w/ his kicks. Still think he needs a little more hang time on the punts.

liked both young guys running ability, but unfortunately golson has the "run first" problem that others like OSUs pryor have had

i guess my problem (mayock also said it on the telecast) is that he drops the ball and "flinches" for no reason, but kelly can fix that, i hope Golson can redshirt then be in the competition next year after Crist

Stock Up:

Everett Golson - He was awesome today. Great zip and he made some beautiful throws. He'll play down the road, so all of his freshman problems (tucking the ball without pressure) will have some time to be ironed out.

Aaron Lynch - He was everywhere. The crowd loved him.

Alex Welch - He was excellent today.

Stock Down:

Dayne Crist - He was awful today. If he's supposed to be far and away our best QB, we're in some trouble. He's throwing long outs in the dirt with consistency (yet again).

Stock Leveled:

Tommy Rees - He was better than Crist, but not by much. His interception was an atrocious throw.

Hendrix I think cracks the 2 deep after what I saw today.
Golson is gonna be special kept his eyes down field even while on the move you could tell it was his first time not being one of the fastest on the field in game situations.
Lynch there's nothing to say that hasn't been said except he made all those plays today on talent wait til the skill set is at college levels.
Nix played well remember there were no blitzes today as Kelly pointed out to Golson.

Up:

Hendrix, Golson, and Welch on offense.

Lynch, Nix, Spond, Collinsworth on defense

Level:

Crist and Rees-elements affected both, but i think they'll be fine and it'll be a fine competition to watch in the fall.

Cierre-showed signs of what makes him special, but i'd still like to see him get down hill a little quicker at times.

Down:

Gray-i can see what the coaches are saying, he needs to run more physical and be Robert Hughes.

Massa-may be a lil premature on this one, but he looked very uncomfortable out there...i'm hoping he can get things going and contribute somewhere down the line.

Crist-same as last year...inconsistent. Rees-still looks like a back up. Hendrix and Golson look very promising and I'd like to see what they can do this yr. I'd say start Hendrix and Golson as the number 2 or vice versa. The defense will be very good this yr. Love Lynch and Nix.

you cannot put two guys in who have not won a game and have limited to no experience in the offense over two guys that know how to get the job done...i have a lot of confidence in Dayne and Rees and would be comfortable with either of them in there, especially if they have Floyd out there to throw to.

Cierre Wood on the #NotreDame offense: "Once we get clicking, it's just going to be, 'How much do you (opponents) want to lose by?'"

"I told Lynch that if he keeps his attitude and everything like that in check that he should be the next Justin Tuck coming out of here," junior running back Cierre Wood said, referring to the former Irish standout who's become a Pro Bowl defensive lineman in the NFL. "If he just keeps working hard, coming to practice positive and getting his work done, he's going to be really good."

#NotreDame RB Cierre Wood's thoughts on fellow RB Jonas Gray: "If I had Jonas' body, I would win the Heisman."

Speaking of Cierre Wood, he looked very fast today and played pretty well in limited action.
