The defense wasn't great but it only gave up 16 points. And 3 of those were given up on a FG after the offense turned the ball over again and the defense was backed up.

The offense couldn't sustain a drive longer than 3 minutes 45 seconds, I believe. The defense can't carry the entire team when the offense does nothing.

You have a track star and a freshmen who blew the top off the defense in his 2 plays on the field. There is enough talent at WR on this team to take some deep shots. Soften the defense, draw a penalty, fight for 50/50 ball, whatever. Pyne has some of that Book hesitation in him. Wtf do you have to lose?
Let me be clear that this isn’t a Tommy apologist post. He called an awful friggin game.

But, those two plays were a result of scheming Tobias 1:1 on a safety.

I’m pretty sure the curls/corner misfire was a line check as well.

So, Tommy called an absolute ass game but those two shots to Tobias were schemed open. Can be critical as hell (and should be after last night) but also give credit where it’s due.

This is what kills me—he calls some great plays and even games he just refuses to do so consistently. We have the talent to physically dominate over 90% of the time but just…don’t.

he just refuses to do so consistently.

He called like 3 straight TD passes on the second drive of the game. None of the 4, 5 times Pyne sat in the pocket for 3 seconds is the play call to do that and then force it to Mayer.

Rees the QB Coach and therefore responsible for Pyne was about 100x worse then Rees the play caller last night.

Totally agree—not even touching on the effectiveness of his other roles that you deftly pointed out there.

Just realized, we’ve gotten “good Pyne” (relative) where Allegiant Stadium, Soldier Field and @ UNC?

Marshall, Cal, Stanford, Cincinnati….

Can we lend any credence to how the team prepares for road games vs home games? I feel as if rigidness of road game prep with hard deadlines to have certain things accomplished, and being removed from distractions seems to be good for this team... That's all an assumption, but the home prep doesn't seem to generate the same return. Too much time for the mad scientist (Rees) to come up with some super complicated gameplan that falls flat with the players.

Did ND try the slow mesh concept early on? I seem to remember a play or two where it looked like they tried that.

Seems like “good Pyne” is more a product of DC’s who don’t play press coverage to take away the short passing game and fail to double team Mayer.

Stat line:
Estime Diggs 17 Carrie’s for 114 yards, over 6 YPC

Tyree Lenzy and Thomas 10 Carries for 17 yards.

Tommy is an idiot and Marcus was overrated as a DC. Great image like Kamala Harris with good image until we get to see her regularly and similar shitty results.

Who can we get now to take over the offense? Marcus needs to nut up as his dwindling reputation is hanging by a thread like his job. He needs to step up and can Tommy now and make an executive decision. Would that hurt or help our recruiting?

So many talking heads out there not close to the program have hailed Tommy as some sort of wunderkind but reality is he just sucks. I will say he received no help from the Oline or QBs against Marshall and Pyne F’d him against Stanford. If Pyne plays a halfway decent game we win by a couple of scores and Tommy only takes a little heat. This team has no true leader it can follow. If Tommy didn’t chew Drew’s ass out again then he should be canned. Time for a bold move. Start Angeli, no one will blame them for giving him a shot.

I wish I could get some space between my love for ND football and life. Can’t wait for Xmas so we can lower our expectations going into next season. Feels like 2016 all over again. Might be worse. None of those losses rivaled either of our two as home favorites this season.

Freeman sucks! He can’t even fake coaching.

Estime and Diggs averaged over 6 YPC so RTDB!
I don't think the problem yesterday was running the ball. I think it was have absolutely zero passing game. Offenses should gave balance. ND ran the ball pretty well in the second half but as soon as a TFL happened, the drive was in serious jeopardy.

Worse yet, Pyne had a great pocket most of the night. I think the WR corp is pretty mediocre and the play designs are worse. I don't want to sound like everyone's angry uncle yelling out the to the field for what play to run, but jesus lord almighty this team doesn't even run slant routes. Tommy is out there coaching Offenses 301 and needs to run Offense 101.

Didn't get to watch live (all day meeting.) Just now watched first quarter seeing something different from what I'd read.
I'll not criticize the Defense, as although the first Stanford drive was hurtful, D stopped them with only 9 points thereafter.
So, to the first quarter offense.

I was surprised (after the negative words on IE) that our actual three first quarter drives don't show bad play by either drew Pyne, nor in general the OLine, nor even the play-calling. As follows:

Drive One: This drive was stopped quickly and simply by (of all people,) Patterson. He starts us off with a motion penalty and then gets his communication with Zeke Correll wrong so that he's standing there blocking no one while Zeke blocks the guy who should be his, and the guy Zeke should be blocking is unabated to Pyne/RB straight up the middle. The other three OLine are blocking their three guys just fine. We are now seriously behind the sticks and have to punt.

Drive Two: Play one has no one in the receiving corps getting open, despite the OLine giving time, and Pyne makes the correct choice of a throwaway. Another play has Stanford OVERTLY loading 8 in the box vs only 6 ND blockers. ALL blockers do OK. Play is still stuffed by the extra guys. (ideally there should be a passing checkoff here.) Drive ending play has the OLine working fine, and Pyne surveying the field looking at Mayer. Mayer seems to run his route lazier than usual, counting on just shedding the defender off him without worrying about separation. Mayer however hesitates just after he shrugs off the DB and Pyne doesn't expect the quit-route, and puts the ball perfectly where Mayer should be. Incomplete and we punt.

Drive Three: really weirdass sequence of things. Really BS holding call on Mayer. Then TE and Flanked WR both on line-of-scrimmage to bring back a TD to Mayer. Pyne hits WR in the hands for a score except the guy bungles it terribly by not even getting his second hand up (which was not impeded by DB.) Pyne misses a pass --- in my opinion the only one to criticize about in the 1st quarter. The fourth down play is stopped by a great edge contain which Mayer could not dominate, and insufficient athleticism by the WR sweeping to hurdle Mayer's legs which would have allowed the timing to still work. There was also earlier an overt 9 in the box vs ND at one point when we had 3 TEs in. Two of the TEs don't help the line of scrimmage, but also, while Lugg and Fisher do their jobs, some strange pulling cross-blocking get Correll and the other two lineman tangled up to the point that Alt even gets pushed down (by Correll I think --- play was a design mess.) <--- that didn't look like OLine incompetence, but rather a screwy play design vs a defense emphasizing speed and edge slashing rather than power stuffing.

IN THE FIRST QUARTER ONLY the offense's on field problems were not Pyne's nor generally Rees' from what I see on tape --- sure there were a couple of plays were Drew should have had a check-off to a pass or an option, and those could have been mental errors by Drew on field or Tommy on planning. There were a LOT of good calls which worked or should have worked. The OLine played well except for three plays all involving Patterson, but one probably caused by design rather than execution (Correll looked clumsy to me on that one). TEs caused most of the trouble (blocking, Mayer's faux-hold and his hesitation route) and the WRs were their usual incompetent crew (dropped TD, essentially never open, poor sweep run.) Whether the young TE or the flanked WR was the guilty party on the TD call-back play is not known by me. Had the TE stepped one pace back, he would have nearly touching Mayer(?) as twins in that location, something I haven't seen in the slot. (so maybe it was the WR.)

Anyway, the 1st quarter drives tell a slightly different story from most of the IE commentary I've glanced at. Doubtless the later 3 quarters will get more in line with IE sentiments. If I watch them, I'll comment again FWIW.
That is great analysis. Please watch and report on the other three. Glad you didn’t have to sit thru it in real time.

Diggs - 4.2 Yards Before Contact per carry - 2.1 Yards After Contact per carry

Tyree - 3.2 YBC/carry - 1.1 YAC/carry

Estime - 3.00 YBC/carry - 2.5 YAC/carry

I said last week I was wrong on Diggs and he just needed to shake off the rust. Yards Before Contact is usually a gauge of the OL play. But if we assume OL play over 8 carries was even, Diggs definitely finds the creases best of the 3.

Diggs was the preferable RB for what their defense was giving us. There are going to be other times Tyree will be higher in these numbers and times Estime is.

Grahambo called it. It’s time to absolutely dump NBC. I was at the game last night, and the only reprieve was not having to listen to those two assholes. I’d rather be forced to listen to that bullshit song Sweet Caroline for 10 hours straight than their dumbass commentary.
I’m pretty sure we didn’t even get a replay of the Chris Smith holding call.

Slept like shit last night because of this game lol
Definitely sorry for some of the bad energy in my posts last night.
I don't understand how ND beats the teams they did and lose to Stanford. I can't wrap my head around this.
It looked like the offensive philosophy went against its strengths last night. I don't understand the philosophy.
The lack of tackling and discipline on defense was uber frustrating. I thought that was the strength of the team.
I'm confused and dumbfounded with the inconsistency of this team. I just don't get it.

NBC and the ND administration deserve each other.

Each only values the football program as a way to make money.

Neither care enough to do what is necessary to put together the best possible product for the fans.

Trying to keep a level head here - it’s unlikely we have QB play this bad again under Rees / Freeman. Pyne is the back up QB for a reason and Buchner is incredibly raw. Think it’s fair to think about how much a Coan-level transfer and + Kevin Austin returning solves things. We are potentially 6-0 in that case.

Freeman / Rees not taking a transfer WR is inexcusable really.
Oh man that is way too much.
If you want to personally tell off the players who wanted Freeman, then be realistic about what the alternative was. Saban and Meyer were never options.

WTF does that mean?
why was Urban Meyer not an option????? Lol

Completely agree. Im just frustrated with what seems to be some hesitation to throw the ball by Pyne. First was a complete miss. It happens. Second was a dime. Now you’ve shown the ability to throw vertical and have the ability to do it. Hopefully we go back to it to open up the underneath that is so congested. Tommy actually has some great calls throughout games. The execution is just a bit off.

Lip service. Hey did you know some ND students helped ban some African woman who stole money from ever coming to the US?

When your football program hasn't done shit in in 28 years, you have to talk about other things.

We should never gripe about the defense when it only gives up 16 points (Other teams have people who can play, and Stanford obviously has some. 16 points is a very low number and it shouldn't have to be said.) Our analysis should concentrate elsewhere for the loss. (which most folks here do.)

One other thing that I notice about Golden's defense: Sometimes early in the game the opponents move down the field. This happened often to Bud Foster, Virginia Tech's legendary great DC for so many years with Beamer. But as my ex-VT brother (who played way back with Beamer) would say: Foster will figure it out --- and the clamps would increasingly come down, and VT would win. I believe that our current DC is a similar DC to Foster --- you can't really predict the opponents' first few series. See what they've really got, then out-plan them from then on.

1. He told us to get bent not once but twice.
2. He's radioactive now.
Yep that was under a former AD and before Kelly turned the program around.

Some program - perhaps Auburn will hire Meyer and he will win while we are stuck.

Don’t let football ruin your sleep.

The inconsistency boils down to a short, 3* QB who doesn’t have elite athleticism (Kyler Murray).

Plenty of talent on the team and moving into the future but QB is the one position that has alluded ND in recent memory. They cannot miss this off-season.
