Quick question

Phil comes in and the game is too fast for him and isn't making good reads and we go 7-5, how happy are you then?
You see the part about it being the right long-term move? If PJ comes in a provides even the SLIGHTEST semblance of progression between games 1 and 12 then we'll already know it was an upgrade at the position.

I'd be okay with Phil coming in and going 7-5, ND is not winning a championship next year. So let Phil get reps, and he should be firing on all cylinders by his Sophomore and Junior season... Maybe he will develop like Brady Quinn. If BW is the starter next year, we still don't make the playoffs but may win a game or 2 more. I'd punt those games in an effort to get PJ going.

Completely self destructed. Our defensive backs aren't good. Interception and fumble back to back were awful. And this team cannot get 3rd and 3's to save our lives.
I always try to support these kids and program, but this is more frustrating than last year for me. To be rolling and have the bottom fall out has been tough to watch.
I don't know what should happen next. We've got misplaced parts all over the roster. I think they did a fair job of plugging and playing into new systems, but the bottom has fallen out. And I'm going to go ahead and call out HH. Yes he develops some great offensive linemen, but as a unit, we've been completely inadequate against the better teams on our schedule. I'm at a loss.

I don’t think Kelly should announce the number one QB in spring ball and make BW win it under the pressure. If he schitts the bed in the BG game and Book clearly outplays him AGAIN then Book gets to keep it. Tired of also all the excuses for Adams. If he is truly nicked up than say so. Dexter has got to be taken off the schitt list. He got the ball 3x last night and looked a lot better than Josh. Next time someone on ND enters the Heisman discussion for a minute F’n ignore it! Any of those joke 33 truckin hats left? He built up some gaudy numbers on wide open holes and races to the goal line. I like him but if he doesn’t have it game to game give Dex a friggn shot. Like giving Cam the ball when Folsten was available. We have elite receivers and with an average QB we should be able to exploit other teams. Not sure I’m loving the RTDB anymore.

Julian Love hasn’t always been perfect in coverage but he has been our most consistent DB in coverage and in tackling. I see him moving to safety next year. We’ll have good depth at DB but not great starters. I like Todd Lyght but doesn’t look like he has coached these guys up. Crawford has also gone downhill along with Coleman. Morgan has made some plays at LB but overall has underachieved IMO. I think Coney has passed him up and definitely has figured out he is a badass. Hopefully our SC program can continue to buff these guys out. Who comes back for a fifth year..

Every assistant coach has come through here praising Kelly’s preparation/organization of running a team. He apparently scripts and runs practices incredibly well, etc.

Where he’s always fallen short in my eyes is the emotional side. Just watch any locker room speech. It falls flat. It’s hollow. He doesn’t have it. And his teams don’t have it. His teams don’t play with it when it matters most, and he never seems to make the inspired call during a game to generate it. A 4th down call. A fake FG or punt. A punt block. A trick play.

This was a very Weis-ian season, and he’s shown himself to be too similar.

Yea, even though, as a coach, you love him, you can't be this kid's buddy. As a coach you gotta put these kids through situations that force the issue sometimes. It is scary because some fall apart....but the team/program can't wait much longer. He is way too easily rattled, and he loses all of his touch and mechanics in games, and his decision making in high-pressure game situations....he is becoming Charles Barkley standing over a T-shot...he needs to fix himself. The only thing a coach can do to help his to expose him to situations that test those coping skills as frequently as possible and be relentless in doing it. He either folds up like a cheap suit or he faces down his demons.

Postgame Thoughts:
Kelly and ND are damned if they do and damned if they don't.

If ND loses the whole f'ing fanbase becomes negative. If ND wins its they could've done this or that better.

I remember when Wimbush was getting praise and now our own fans are jumping off the bandwagon and throwing him under the bus. I have not been all that impressed with him all year.

I've said he sucks at throwing all year, every game besides the WF game, and taken heat for it. I think he's been consistently bad all year. There's a lot more proof that he's bad than that he's good.

Some people just don't have it. You see Wimbush in and he's hoping not to screw up. You see Book come in with minimal reps, less experience, and it's like he jumps on a horse and says giddee-up. Not saying he's awesome, but he's not shaky glass like Wimbush.

I agree Wimbush's passing game has been mediocre the whole season. He's missed open guys, underthrown, overthrown, etc. We basically had the same WR group as last year. Wimbush will need to have the biggest offseason improvement IMO.

I have been impressed with Book ever since the spring game and I saw more of him. He has a nice rollout pass. I don't think he can be a starter at Notre Dame.

We aren’t winning a championship anytime soon. We couldn’t beat Bama,Auburn,Oklahoma after last night Ohio State, Penn state the list could go on and on.

He hasn’t thrown the ball worth a shit all year and if you go back and read you will see a lot of people said that.

Yeah I've seen criticism, but also posters sticking up for him.

I've said all year and watched that I do not like him running the ball, he doesn't tuck the ball all the time.

Wimbush played like a true freshman this year.....

Is 2017 the worst safety play you've ever seen at ND?

No. 2007 and 2016 were worse. I agree with some of the other posters saying it's in big part due to bad recruiting over multiple cycles. No team is going to trot out a true sophomore and a converted corner (both of whom were developmental players coming out of high school) at the safety position and be that good at that position. Given the overall youth of the d they overachieved this season. Depending on who comes back next year the defense could be really good or take a step backwards.

I feel like eating Jersey Mike's, for some reason... and buying a car.

A sub above!!!

The honey mustard cheese steak is lit.

So as an epilogue, I did go to Jersey Mike's, today. I tried the chipotle chicken cheese steak. It was pretty good.

I think Quizno's actually makes a better sandwich. Earl of Sandwich was good, too. Best sub on Oahu can be found at Storto's, in Haleiwa.

Damn you, ABC.

It has been bad for quite some time, but it's not fair because ND has had such a tough time recruiting the position.

Not fair? I don’t hear Stanford saying that as they pull in 4 & 5 star DBs like Buncom, Reid & Meeks.

First jersey Mike's is the absolute best for me-2nd-these guys gave me a great ride this year and playing with what the have really over achieved (job well done) 3rd they just looked out of gas and I'll give em a pass after Miami/Marines and then the trip to Palo Alto. One thing I would like to see change is that every year no matter what Notre Dame has to go out there for the last game and play a super bowl game against a really good opponent no one else even considers that in their scheduling. I seriously doubt if any of the 4 playoff teams could win all 3 of those games. The Irish have backed themselves into a hole with this type of scheduling. Southern Cal/Stanford on the road is a tough way to finish every single year. Play em for sure but change the dates. No excuses we got beat but when you ask these guys to run that gauntlet every single year you risk these upsets-yes upset-Stanford is good but they don't beat a Notre Dame team this year win a little more gas in the tank.

Honestly shocked at how this team crumbled. They fell apart on a national stage to a rival in the biggest possible way. INT, fumble, INT, game over.

Didn't read everything, so I may be repeating a few things.

1. IIRC this is the fifth year in a row we have lost the last game of the season game (not counting bowl games). Having USC or Stanford as the opponent, doesn't help, but we should be splitting these games with them.
2. Something was definitely wrong with Adams the last three games of the season. He didn't look anything like the RB we saw the first 2/3rd's of the season.
3. I think the hiring of Long was a mistake. His selection of plays and the timing of when he calls them is terrible.
4. Wimbush is holding the ball way too long. Is this because our receivers can't get open or he doesn't trust himself? With a season under his belt, he should be much better next year.
5. The Miami game took us mentally out of the rest of the season.
6. I wouldn't mind having Shaw as the HC. Like him or loathe him, he gets his team ready to play. They answered every one of our scores and took advantage of the TO's. That's the sign of a mentally tough team.
7. Normally I would be happy with 1 9-3 season after going 4-8, but the way the season finished makes 9-3 feel more like 6-6 or 7-5.
8. Give the improvement, I would be for giving BK one more season. Given the way it finished, I wouldn't mind a change. Flip a coin.

Play calling has been atrocious and painfully predictable at times.

I sat scratching my head the last three games. Long looks good as long as the team can run the ball. Once the run game is stuffed, his calls were questionable at best. Third and 3-5 yards and you still insist on running between the tackles. How about a roll out with a RP option? Maybe a quick slant? I'm beginning to think the Long hire was a mistake.

I don't think there's any point the Long hire was a mistake up to this point. He's getting exposed for sure. Doesn't help that he has a QB he can't rely on.

2. I know Adams had an ACL in his JR of HS that he seemed to recover fully from. He wasted no time becoming a weapon on offense when injuries struck in 2015. Even amid a turd of a season last year, Adams put up big numbers and broke some big runs vs some good defenses. Either he is too banged up to be a factor or he has worn all the tread off his tires. I have to think it’s the former unless there’s some additional injury history I’m not aware of. Think back to the season finales in 2015 & 2016. He excelled in both of them and broke off some huge runs while racking up 168 yds @ Stanford and
180 yds @ SC. Keep in mind, he only had as many as 20 carries once in each season. He only hit 20 twice this season w/ 27 vs NCST & 20 in another game. Hopefully he can rest up for the bowl. If not & he’s no better then he should forego the bowl and let Dexter, Tony & Deon get the carries.

3. I’m not ready to say Long was a mistake. If the players, namely the QB, can’t execute the plays he calls, how can we properly judge Long? Look at the RPO vs Stanford...BW should’ve clearly opted to hit Stepherson with the quick pass to the boundary. Instead, he hands the ball off to Adams despite four defenders closing in.

4. I think most ND fans have concluded that Wimbush’s problem is between his ears. When local & national media declare that Brandon can make every pass in practice, what other conclusion is there to draw after 12 games in 2017 & three seasons at ND? My cynical side tells me the fanbase will be filled with hope as BW has a month to work on getting better. Then, I’m afraid, the doubt creeps back in as the opposing D brings pressure. I predict an open QB comp in the Spring.

6. Shaw would never come to ND IMO. In fact, as a Stanford alum & former player, I doubt he ever leaves for another college gig. His next stop, if anym will be the NFL...which I would love to see ASAP.
