The two aren’t remotely the same
Both were/are worthy of significant punishment. NCAA has proven to be toothless without compliance. Just compare UNC to the Frozen 5. Compliance is everything and Michigan has already made it clear they're circling the wagons.

I do wonder if the B1G was working behind the scenes trying to find a punishment that on the surface seems light but something that won’t be reversed by a last minute suit.

I'll say this until I'm blue in the face but a really big difference between this and all the usual academic/recruiting/sweeping-crimes-under-the-rug sort of NCAA investigations is that in this case, other prominent NCAA member schools were directly victimized on the field of play.

They're going to demand justice and they have just as much standing with the B1G/NCAA as Michigan does. That's why the Big Ten moved as fast as it did. And it's why the NCAA will have to respond in a serious way, eventually.

This is the equivalent of zero punishment. I hope they don't think this will suffice.

The need to follow it up with postseason ban, lost scholarships, and vacated wins (at minimum)

It is not the equivalent of zero punishment. If this is the end of it, it will be disappointing, but not having a head coach on the sideline does matter, especially when big decisions have to be made during a game. Even something as simple as dividing responsibilities becomes more complicated.

There weren't going to be vacated wins and postseason bans until the NCAA completes its investigation and sends out a notice of allegations. That won't happen until the end of the season. This whole thing is actually moving exceedingly fast as far as these things go.

We all know this is not going to amount to a hill of beans.

There are a small number of people on this board who keep repeating this thought as a defense mechanism against disappointment even though the actual developments have already disproven this thought.

When has a conference suspended a coach in-season for the remainder of the season?

When has punishment ever been levied within weeks of allegations?

There is a major NCAA investigation ongoing. This action does not preclude further action from the Big 10 as more evidence comes to light. This is already a big deal.

I’m assuming this is the starting point since it’s just the Big 10 and not the NCAA. This is the most rapid response we’ve ever seen for cheating in CFB history.
LSU Basketball cheated on a wire and it took over🇲2 years

Can’t help but feel the NCAA played a part in this suspension

Reading that letter and the timeline... Michigan is well and truly fucked. They clearly are digging their heels in to get through the season when everyone expected them to be "proactive" in policing themselves. That's not going to play well.

They are so cooked. This is a situation where they know they’re fucked no matter what they do so the President/AD are like “well might as well try to make the most out of this season before the hammer comes down.” It’s the politically savvy move for them to appease fans and the BoT.
