For those of you that understand some of this shit from a defensive standpoint—how plausible is it that they’re being taught to STAY engaged in order to free up the linebackers to “make plays.” We used to coach our tackles, especially, to do this at times in a three-front defense.

It’s a possibility but haven’t seen that taught in a long time

You can’t let a dangerous team playing at home hang around. Arky’s defense sucks but that offense can hurt you.

It's bad scheme ends are so concerned with QB run they are doubling play side dt and the end isn't coming down to fill center is getting to the second level taking on backer

I believe its more of an issue if no one being comfortable with what they're asked to do and they don't really understand their jobs/roles, causing them to play slow and indecisive

That’s what I’m saying, especially with “defensive holding” being a penalty in modern CFB. I’m just trying to reconcile what I’m watching with what they might even be trying to accomplish.

If Washington is being schematically told by Ash to have his line play a certain way, it isn’t on him.

They just rush straight ahead trying to play react defense instead of stunting and crashing the pocket like last year.
They ruled by controlled chaos and are now passive as heck.

Here's a fun way to watch the game: put score alerts on your phone. Watch the game when the offense is on the field and switch the channel when the defense comes on. The alert from the defense allowing another score will let you know when to switch back to watch the offense.

This is what happens when you don’t hire outside your coaching tree. Freeman could have found someone that was a DC within the last decade. What happened to “challenge everything”?

I haven’t been watching closely enough to have a sense of whether or not they’ve been succeeding at this but yeah, a lot of the time the job of a defensive lineman-especially if you’re worried about a mobile qb-is to control gaps rather than beat the o lineman and get pressure. That can involve staying engaged with the o linemen.

I guess the problem is if you’re trading pressure for LOS control you want to actually get the benefits of that control, and usually the other team running all over you is an indication you’re not getting that.
