Admittedly, this game could be tough if we struggle to get some rhythm offensively.

How can you tell when the Boilermakers are going to run the football? The running back leaves the huddle with tears in his eyes.

Lafayette (IN) -- Boilermakers football practice was delayed nearly two hours today after a player reported finding an unknown white powdery substance on the practice field. Head coach Hope immediately suspended practice while police and federal investigators were called to investigate. After a complete analysis, FBI forensic experts determined that the white substance unknown to players was the goal line. Practice was resumed after special agents decided the team was unlikely to encounter the substance again.

I agree, a lot of people seem to think that last year's close win means we're a lot closer in skill and that this year's game will be tight.

If we had a healthy Clausen and Allen, we would have won by 21 last year. I don't think Purdue is terrible, because most teams can't lose their All-American QB and 1st string HB and win a road game like that.

But we're just flat out better.

Unless we have one of those games where we fumble a few time and throw two or more interceptions, we should have a comfortable lead going into the 4th.

Without Bolden, I imagine they'll get awfully pass-happy in that offense of theirs...especially since Purdue hasn't effectively run the ball against Notre Dame since 1962.....or let's just say in a long time.

So we'll have to shoot ourselves in the foot and Marve will have to play his best game of his college career. When is the last time he played a game? Yeah, he may be talented, but I doubt this game is close.

43-19 ND.

I say 27-20 Notre Dame with Purdue scoring a very late touchdown to make it a 7 point win. I wouldn't predict a lot of points for QB going into his first career start, even if he is as awesome as Dayne.

September 4th will feel like Christmas. Hopefully I can get a parking pass and get up there extra early.

Notre Dame has got this in the bag! Kelly will want to pull out a lot of tricks. 38-17

The week before Michigan? I really don't think so. Of course, there's always the "beginning of an era" mentality and that could translate to a little more risk.

This will be my first game in the student section! I've been waiting for it for a long time, and I'm glad it's against Purdue because I know so many of their fans. After going to last year's game at Purdue and getting crap from their fans just for the game being close, I can't wait to send that team home crying.

Notre Dame wins 34-14... and 7 of the 14 comes late and meaninglessly

I'll say Notre Dame wins 23-16. Purdue usually plays a close game, and I don't expect this one to be any different.

"Getting crap?"

Your team won.

You simply smile and say, "Congratulations, your guys played a great game. It probably ranks as one of Purdue's best all time losses."

Wait for it to sink in then ask politely, "Are you going to print up tee shirts saying, 'We lost close to a 6-6 ND team"?

Or note politely, "Your coaches probably want to memorial that great loss by putting the score on the team rings."

There's always,

"Did you know only one team has lost more times to Notre Dame than Purdue?"

or, "Don't feel too bad about the loss, Purdue has already lost more times to Notre Dame than any other opponent in your entire history."

So many possibilities.

I think this game is close. Purdue is actually in my 10 teams to watch out for in 2010. I know it sounds crazy but ya never know. Anyway Irish win 30-28 with Purdue missing a last second field goal.

uh, Weis is no longer the coach. this team will be prepared and finally play with emotion instead of acting lifeless like they did under Jabba. i look for ND to execute and destroy Purdue 42-10. thanks for coming robert marve.

I'll be at the game. Great to be able to witness the first game in the Kelly era.

I have no idea who wins, or what the score will be. I figure that's why both teams show up to play the game. I hope ND shows up hungry and loaded for bear.

Purdue is going to struggle without Bolden. Just like Michigan is going to have to rely on running the ball, Purdue will have to rely on throwing the ball.

Anyone that confident that Marve is going to light it up?

I'm not.

Some are concerned about how the team will play early, but I think it will be a lot like the beginning of the Weis era, in that it will take opposing teams a while to adjust to the new Irish offense.

Bottle up Kerrigan, exploit their secondary. Irish by at least 21.

He's good. But I'm worried about that monster wide receiver, Keith Smith. God, that guy is a beast.

Who is the coach?

Who is the coach?

Guys, some of you are acting as if CW is still the coach. The team WILL be in better condition than Purdue for the first time in many years. They will have better talent at running back, wide out (close but we have Floyd), tightend and the interior line spots. We also have better talent in the secondary, and I am optomistic that they will cover and tackle better than last year. We also have better linebackers although Purdue's linebackers are solid. Purdue probably has better offensive tackles and a more proven defensive line. The QB position is a toss up in my opinion with neither starting having significant experience.

Because ND is in much better condition than before, the cover teams should be better. They can't be coached any worse than they were. We will make field goals like last year with two very good FG kickers on the team.

1st Quarter - ND's defense comes out strong and shuts down the first two Boiler drives. The offense scores twice, beating the Purdue secondary with catch and runs after fine returns by Riddick and the punt returner (not sure who that will be as of now.)

2nd Quarter - Purdue settles in and stops the third ND drive short. FG. Purdue gets a field goal of their own on a short field drive due to a turnover or good return. No other scoring as both defenses have settled in well.

3rd Quarter - BK proves he is no CW by adjusting to the success the Purdue front 7 had in the second quarter. The lack of a consistent pass rush also hurts ND. Both teams score a TD, but the Irish get another field goal late in the quarter.

4th Quarter - ND puts the game away with a defensive TD. The offense goes a little more conservative but runs the ball well as the better conditioning of their linemen, especially the interior guys, takes over. Add a FG for the Irish. Purdue gets a late TD to finish the scoring.

Final Score - 30-17 Irish

I would love to see us blow them out of the water. I will be there, head up to Grand Rapids to throw a retirement party for my dad (no "special" brownies will be there, NDOM), and back to ND for the scUM game.

That said, I am having a hard time remembering an offensively sound 1st game of the season from our boys. We are always extremely rusty offensively in game 1. The only season opener I can recall throwing a lot of points on the board for in the last 20 years is against Kansas in '99? Was still an ugly game until a touchdown that would not have been a touchdown with instant replay (WR let go of the ball before crossing the goal line), and then the floodgates opened up.

Hopefully new coach, new rules, but to expect the offense to click from game 1 is not our M.O. I'll still be mildly optimistic.
