There is a lot of debate about how good the SEC really is in 2010. They get a lot of credit for playing each other, but what does that really prove? Most assume they are the best, so I broke down their out of conference performance to see.
Overall, the SEC was 41-9 (82%) out of conference. And that sounds pretty impressive.
However, only 40% of those games were against bowl eligible teams. In those games they were 14-6 (70%), which isn't too bad but not elite. Consider ND was 58.3% for reference.
They were 27-3 (90%) against the others with loses to Wake Forest, Jacksonville St, and Colorado. ND was (100%)
Of the bowl teams they played, 5 of them are in the BCS top 25: Oregon, West Virginia, Central Florida, Florida St, and Texas A&M.
In these 5 games, they were 2-3 (2-4 if you want to count Connecticut as a BCS team). The wins were #17 Texas A&M [Arkansas] and #22 West Viginia [LSU]. So by current rankings, their premier win was against the #17 team. However, at that time, A&M was mediocre and hadn't found their QB who was a WR at the time.
I don't know what you all think, but I think they are good, but no better than some other conferences. I'm not impressed with any of their wins.
And as I type, FSU is controlling S. Carolina, so that could be another bowl/top 25 loss if the second half holds.
I think betting against the SEC is a good play this year. Even Oregon over Auburn. The inital line was Oregon by 3, but the public moved the line to Auburn by 2 or so. This is just because so many people have bought into the SEC being great, you may be able to make some money going the other way.
