Honestly it's really sad what has happened to them in the past ten years plus... in reality they should be one of our cleaner rivals... the school is up their academically and they do NOT have a history of this crap... like it or not Bo would not have allowed this garbage.

to me it's sad because cureently we have Navy (duh) and Stanford as the only rivals we can fully respect...

There is no way Dick Rod would shoot himself in the foot by putting harder sanctions on his program. He's feeling the fire under him due to the last two seasons, and he needs every advantage he can get. I'd like to see the NCAA slap them around a little bit.

130 hours sounds like a lot, but does anyone know what that breaks down to over the course of 2 years?

Let's see, two years, August through December (if they make a bowl, since losing teams can now play bowl games). About a month in the spring.

Roughly 23 week days per month.
Six months a year.
Six months, 23 days per month, equals 138 days a year.
Multiply that by two years equals 276 days a year.

.47 hours per day are cut. Just over 28 minutes and 15 seconds per day.

That is, if amount they have to practice are right (probably not).

Even Navy has had their problems with player discipline.

I love the idea of self imposed sanctions that allow you to avoid other discipline. Can we implement this in other aspects of society.

"Your Honor, I know I was doing 110mph in a school zone, but, in lieu of fines and other discipline, I am going to self impose that I only can listen to jazz fusion or Mexican talk radio while in the car and I am also going to spend 10 hours alone in my room while I think about what I have done."

Seriously! This is laughable. If they violated an NCAA regulation, they should be punished. End of story.

When I was a kid, a friend of mine shoplifted some candy bars from a local store. The cop that brought my friend home, arranged with the kid's parents to take care of the discipline. My dad said if it was me that did something like that he would let the law handle it accordingly AND he would punish me too. There was no either or situation. Needless to say, I never shoplifted! NCAA should handle these situations no matter what.

Self imposed...pffft!

I think that the NCAA limit is 20 hours per week of practice. So, in reality, they are losing just over 3 weeks of practice, per year. I know that doesn't sound like much, but when you consider that most people are of the opinion that their team should always take any bowl game it can get, due to the extra few weeks of practice time, it's not insignificant.

Still not harsh enough! They broke the rules and SHOULD be hit with a harsh penalty, incluing loss of some scholarships and recruiting restrictions! Cheatin' asses!

The NCAA has a history of adding on a little to self-imposed sanctions like at FSU and at Alabama. That said they don't really add much of anything significant on top of the University's decision, so this is probably all that is going to come of it. I see the most happening is taking away a couple of scholarships which I would see as completely reasonable.

I think the most ridiculous thing about this is the fact that Brandon and RichRod said that no competitive was gained which is ludicrous in itself. Why would you do it if no competitive advantage was gained? If there is extra practice and coaches having more interaction or evaluation time with players that gives a competitive advantage. Yes I realize that other schools do it to and don't get caught but they do it because it is an ADVANTAGE. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous. These guys are a joke and really are a disgrace to UofM's history. End of rant.

Every single in the country has had issues with that... that is the ONLY case where "It happens in every school" is actually relevant... but what has been goping on with UM the past 15 or so(in BBall too) is sad to me, they are supposed to be better than this

I'm not arguing for the self imposed sanctions being enough. I was merely pointing out that they were about as significant, in terms of practice time, as missing a bowl game. I do think that Michigan's 130 years of major infraction free football ought to count for something. If it were my decision, I would probably offer them a choice:

All of your self imposed sanctions, PLUS:

A.) Loss of 3 scholarships for 5 years
OR
B.) Loss of 5 scholarships for 3 years

No you don't. Otherwise, you wouldn't be sticking up for the cheatin' assholes! They (Dick Rod and his 'henchmen') knew what they were doing when they were skating the issue of breaking the RULES set by the NCAA and they need to penalized a helluva lot more than their little charade of trying to appear being tough on themselves! What they are recommending for themselves couldn't even be considered a 'slap on the wrist'!

If UM wanted to really punish itself for their football transgressions, they would have come out and said "You know, we're sorry for sucking SOOO bad the last few years. Never mind any rules we may have broken, the fact we put an unwatchable product on the field dressed in maize and blue has led us to stop playing football altogether. Thank you all for coming, we're now going to focus on our women's basketball team."

I'm not sure if this is old news, but I read today that 5 Star recruit, Demar Dorsey would not be granted admission into Michigan due to academic concerns. Just another major blow to RichRod

Maybe then he'll consider USC. Oh wait, they haven't got room for him due to scholarship allotments.

Damn. Maybe he'll walk on.
