Just a thought to consider IMO. This is why our willingness to abandon Ukraine bothers me so much:
IMO, If Ukraine loses, Taiwan is not the worry, that is a forgone conclusion.
The real countries at risk become:
In the East: South Korea and Japan
In Europe: Poland, Baltics(Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia)
If US citizens can't stomach a proxy war involving only money/weapons to fight for the little guy, of course we obviously can't stomach a real war.
Taiwan is gone If we are being realistic. That is more certain than Ukraine. If I understand correctly there are even a large amount of Taiwanese that want it so there doesnt even need to be a use of force by China.
However, our lack of fortitude to stand up for Ukraine sets a real worry in South Korea and Japan.
Korea was essentially a Chinese vassal state for millenia. China has been at an off war with Japan forever and has been waiting for revenge from ww2.
Our lack of support for Ukraine is a litmus test showing that we would never consider actually fighting for our allies if we cant even provide financial support to Ukraine. I mean do you actually think Americans would die for Koreans??
But at least, if we didnt bail on Ukraine, it would give the implication that we may support our allies. Now, due to our actions in Ukraine, any potential threat of US intervention is dead.
Just putting that thought out there. I assume the same people saying we need to bail on Ukraine would say we don't need to protect S. Korea/Japan. However, IMO, our actions will seal their fate. In time, don't be surprised if China retakes Korea and Japan gets conquered. We have proven we won't stand up to help and the threat is off the table.
I certainly wouldnt want to fight either, but I don't get why we are basically announcing to the world that America has no stomach to stand up for anyone. The whole point was to establish the perception. Now its gone.
