I would not mind picking this kid up because he has GREAT hands but I just think he would get lost in our depth chart at WR. Maybe a PR/KR guy but not sure.

Roby would be used like Wes Walker from New England. I agree that Roby would have his work cut out for him with all those talented WR at ND.

Roby should announce this morning. If i hear any updates i will be sure to let you all know

To be honest, I think it is a wasted scholarship with this kid. Obviously Manti isn't worried about being separated from his long-time friend and I don't see how he would ever contribute on the field. Next year's class is supposed to be amazing (the three verbal commits already made attest to that), and the crop of talent that is supposed to be in the midwest alone makes me feel that we should save every scholarship we have for the next class. Not only do we have Tate and Floyd, but you have Evans coming in, Walker and Goodman have 4 years of eligibility, and we already have a commit from Daniel Smith. And Weis has already extended offers to Kyle Prater and Tai-ler Jones, far better WR recruits than Toma.

I am sure Toma would be a welcomed asset to the Irish, but he just isn't needed. Now if Toma was a 6'4, 245-lb. DE with edge pass-rushing skills, I would say welcome. Nonetheless, this class is great without him.

i agree what a waste, leave it alone and lets concentrate on the next class.

my question to all of you is this!!!!

You say what a waste on Toma.
What if it is 2-3-09 and Manti called Charlie and said I will be IRISH if you Give my buddy Toma a free ride.

is it a waste then?

we are not going to get 20 5 star kids next year.

Remember that if Manti takes his mission after next season he essentially has to recommit to the IRISH. wouldnt it be nice to have Toma there (his best bud.) to keep him at Notre Dame after that 1 or 2 year mission.

we only took 17 this year and only have a handful comming back for 5th years. give the kid a free ride.

so again is it a waste if Manti said toma needs a roster spot and i will come to south bend?

If Manti called on 2/3 with that kind of ultimatum, then he wouldn't be the type of excellent person that by all accounts he is. That said, Toma is not necessarily a wasted roster spot. He may be a David Grimes type that would be useful. He might also serve to strengthen a Hawaiian pipeline for future recruiting classes. This doesn't have the same feel as offering somebody's mother a staff job with the university.

Just food for thought. According to rivals he has the same rating as W. Tate and actually runs a faster 40 time. Half the people on here were saying lets throw Tate an offer because we could use that type of athlete, but this guy who is a natural WR not a project like Tate would have been is a wasted scholarship. I just don't get it.

Just gives some people a chance to piss and moan.

If offering a scholarship to Toma was what was needed to get Te'o, than it was worth it. Even if Toma never contributes on the field. I really believe the Te'o signing is bigger than it seems. Looking back years ahead, it may be the move that puts Charlie on the map, that establishes his 'brand' on the program. Who knows, it may open the flood gates for other 4, and 5 star recruits in the following years.

with all that being said...he won't see the field ever. Maybe special teams if he's lucky. We had all Americans riding the pine at WR, plus we just added another all American. If he was a 2 for 1 then yes I'm glad he's here, other then that again i say what a waste.

i said that when UCLA offered him after Hillard committed. I figured they were gonna offer Manti's entire HS team.

I know what you are saying, but we have Floyd, Tate, Kamara, Walker, West, Parris, Goodman, Evans, etc. It's not like it's thin at WR.

So, in a couple of years some of these players will be done (possibly even Floyd if elects to leave after his junior yr.). Toma is a 3 star, has very good speed and evidently has great hands. There's no guarantee that the Irish will land a bunch of top rated WR's the next 2 years. Give the kid a chance. If the Irish would have inked 20 kids already this year, I wouldn't have agreed with his signing. But since they had only 17 signed thus far, there's room for another without deterring from next year's class.

It's always good to have warm bodies. Competition breeds character.

It would be funny to look back, if Toma develops into an offensive stud, and Te'o disappoints.

So basically what your saying is we have 2 stud WR, a guy that had a huge drop off and disappointed his Soph. year, two guys that probably won't see time, two "redshirt"frosh that we have no idea how they will actually turn out at the college level, and a frosh yet to step on campus. Yeah we have a dearth of proven talent at WR. I don't think this is a waste at all, on paper his numbers look ok, he was invited to the Under-Armour game and led the state in receiving.

I agree he is a Joey Getherall type receiver...he won the best hands competion for WR at the Under Armor game. I think he is one of those kids that will be a 3-4 WR his senior year but will contribute eventually. Plus he is a great excuse for Teo to come back after his mission which is what is key here!

I never said he was a waste, I have no problem offering him one bit. I was replying to the statement that we were thin without Floyd. There are plenty of WRs that can and should step up. Toma might be a Barry Gallup, or maybe a Grimes-type...who knows.

Has anyone looked into Toma's history as a DB????? That could be the missing link to this offer when you look at the huge lack of depth we have there

Michael Crabtree was a 2 star recruit. Obviously Toma doesn't have the same height/weight as Crab but you never know what he can develop into.
