Love seeing Councell as number one on that list. Just made my day. Kid will be a stud for sure and it's about time the recruiting services notice just how good he is.

My question is why none of their rankings/star ratings have changed. If they publish an article saying that Ben Councell is underrated and was the top surprise, why don't they upgrade him to a 4 star? It just seems stupid. They're also high on Lynch's performance and yet his rank has remained constant (correct me if I'm wrong here). It's nice to see the article but I don't know why they haven't made the adjustments that such observations should warrant.

They haven't done their second round of updates yet. Should be soon

Thanks, Terry. I had assumed that the rankings were fluid rather than just updated a few times a year. I think that targeting a player like Ben Councell says a lot about our staff's ability to assess talent. They went after him before he got any attention. I suspect (and this may be wishful thinking) that a number of our other low-profile recruits would out-perform expectations if given the chance.

Kelly and his staff know what they're looking for and they don't seem to care what the recruiting services say about the players they are bringing in. Articles like this give me reason to believe that their method will bear fruit.

All I have to say is it's about time, and although I don't give a whole lot of attention to the * ratings it will be nice to see ND get the credit they deserve once the ratings are updated.

Rivals Showing ND Love

ND Love? Or just recognizing 3 guys that came on strong?

Lynch and Wiliams were both highly regarded and had widespread attention before the All Star games . Counsell wasn't.

The first two were also recruited big time.

I'm not sure calling Counsell even a regional prospect before the Bowl games is justifed. Half his offers were from Carolina schools. He didn't get offers from the stronger ACC teams like VT, FSU, MIA, or BC. Got a couple of SEC offers but not a bunch. His furthest offers from home were ARK, WVU, and ND. He was a "find".

Once again the national scope of Notre Dame football will come to view for the entire college football world. I'm not saying they will play in the last BCS game but I am saying that all these kids needed was a reason to believe Notre Dame could come back. The power and pull of an excellant Notre Dame program is too much to overlook coupled with the education they can receive. Now we can 'go' and see what damage they can do. The way Kelly got these guys to finish was all these kids needed to turn their eyes to South Bend and the Fighting Irish of Notre Dame. A tip of the hat should be given to those players who have laid this groundwork. I have said all along that Notre Dame's national scope rivals any conference (not just any team) when they are excellant. We may now get to find out if I am correct.

While scouring depth charts looking for old ND targets we were high on I noticed Anthony Barr at UCLA. Remember that uber-athletic, offense/defense capable kid? He's listed as the back-up FB!... weak. That kid would have been playing next to Manti if he came here. Have fun never getting the ball, never winning and watching on as ND regains its glory.

As the link implies, these recruits are all going to get bumps in the rankings. I agree they do not matter except for bragging rights and water cooler talk. It can sometimes be viewed as good publicity as well though. With networks like ESPN pushing this stuff in every 15 to 18 year olds face, it is almost free advertising when they actually show us love.

Rivals is tough. They seem to hand out only a handful of 5th stars while Scout and ESPN are far more generous. As of now Clowney is the only DE with 5 stars. I am not sure if they are willing to give out 3 to Tuitt, IShaq, and Lynch, but I predict they will put it on 2 of them. Complete predictions for rivals:

By Rivals Rating and Stars. BOLD indicates a bump:

Aaron Lynch 6.1 :s::s::s::s::s:
Stephon Tuitt 6.1 :s::s::s::s::s:
Ben Councell 6.0 :s::s::s::s:
Ishaq Williams 6.0 :s::s::s::s:
George Atkinson III 5.9 :s::s::s::s:
Matthew Hegarty 5.9 :s::s::s::s:
Ben Koyack 5.9 :s::s::s::s:
Davaris Daniels 5.8 :s::s::s::s:
Everett Golson 5.8 :s::s::s::s:
Jarrett Grace 5.8 :s::s::s::s:
Eilar Hardy 5.8 :s::s::s::s:
Anthony Rabasa 5.8 :s::s::s::s:
Josh Atkinson 5.7 :s::s::s:
Conor Hanratty 5.7 :s::s::s:
Cam McDaniel 5.7 :s::s::s:
Tony Springmann 5.7 :s::s::s:
Jalen Brown 5.6 :s::s::s:
Brad Carrico 5.6 :s::s::s:
Nick Martin 5.6 :s::s::s:
Bennett Okotcha 5.6 :s::s::s:
Matthias Farley 5.5 :s::s::s:
Kyle Brindza 5.4 :s::s::s:

Sort of a shot in the dark but oh well. The new rankings usually come out on tuesday or wednesdays so look for them this week or next. I feel every year, the last ranking is the most generous (why I feel many of our guys are currently underrated). This may be due to the site wanting to not upset the subscribers (all about the customers) and not take stars/points away if they can avoid it. They would rather "increase" the hype of an incoming player...makes everyone happy. If this is true our ranking will be closer to scouts #3 then our current position of outside the top 10.

If Rivals new ratings next week mirror YOUR PREDICTIONS, ND would rise to an Average Star Rating of about 3.64. That would move ND up to #4 behind ALA, UTX, and OU in the Ave Star race but another half dozen teams like FSU, LSU, USC, CAL, ORE, OSU, UF, and NU are in range and have a better list of REMAINING prospects. ND has few offers outstanding.

ND will also suffer late in the arms race as some school overbook the 25 limit. If I recall correctly the SEC allows 28 signees this year. ND at 22 or 23 even at 25 is giving up players in the body count which translates to total points in some services rankings.

ND should end up in the Top 10 but without a big class and a bunch of 5 Star guys the top slots are out of reach this year, no matter how good you or I think this class fits in an ND.

Now when considering who actually enrolls in school, ND could well rise into the Top 5.

Who enrolls is what matters not the greyshirts, prep school enrollees, nor major league baseball players.
