So I looked it up. Motley Crue and Van Halen have both sold 80 million albums, worldwide. They both deserve to be in the hall of fame.

I can't believe 1984 wasn't number 1. When most people think of them at their absolute zenith, it was that era. But fair enough, 5150 went number 1.

Yeah, I knew it was something terrible like that with the auto accident. Lots of other bad things to people who matter in the business. Burning bridges.

Quick story. My Tutor in college was in a band. They were playing at some club and Vince was there. He got up and sung with them for a couple of songs. Cool, right?

Well after the last song, he did some rock star thing by tossing the mic stand really hard on the stage and slamming the mic down on it. He was like 'Vince, that cost me $2,000!'

He rolled his eyes and smiled like he was saying 'do you know how lucky you are that I sung with your little band up there' and walked off.
Does Nashville have any casinos nearby? If so, you can probably run into Neil if you wanted to. I’m sure his fat, drunk ass is out pissing away his money. That’s why they keep touring, even though they’ve been claiming their last tour was the final one for 20 years.

The closest is Tunica. Went there once.

That doesn't surprise me about Vince. His little girl, Skylar, passed away and he went on a deeper downward spiral.

Vince has always been a piece of shit but I certainly have sympathy for anyone who’s lost a child. I hope to god I leave this world before my daughter. I don’t even want to think about the pain of losing her.

They weren't bigger than Motley until the Black Album. Here is what Google says.

AI Overview

+3
While Mötley Crüe was undoubtedly one of the most commercially successful and influential bands of the 1980s metal scene, it's difficult to definitively declare them the "biggest." Other bands like Metallica and Van Halen also achieved significant commercial and cultural impact. Mötley Crüe's MTV-fueled success and mainstream appeal, particularly with their second album "Shout at the Devil," certainly solidified their place in the top tier of 80s metal.
Here's a more detailed look at why Mötley Crüe is often considered a key band of the era:
Commercial Success:
Mötley Crüe sold over 80 million albums worldwide, including 25 million in the U.S., solidifying their commercial dominance.
MTV Impact:
The band's success was significantly boosted by MTV, which played a major role in popularizing their music and image.
Mainstream Appeal:
Mötley Crüe's blend of heavy metal, glam rock, and a penchant for controversy resonated with a broader audience, contributing to their mainstream success.
Cultural Impact:
The band's lifestyle, image, and music helped shape the 80s metal scene and influenced a generation of musicians.

Key Bands and Album Sales (1982–1992)

1. Metallica

• Estimated Sales: ~20–25 million albums (U.S. alone, 1982–1992).

• Key Albums:

• Master of Puppets (1986): 6x Platinum (6 million, RIAA).

• …And Justice for All (1988): 8x Platinum (8 million, RIAA).

• Metallica (1991, “Black Album”): 16x Platinum (16 million, RIAA by 1992’s end, though sales continued to grow).

2. Def Leppard

• Estimated Sales: ~15–20 million albums (U.S.).

• Key Albums:

• Pyromania (1983): 10x Platinum (10 million, RIAA).

• Hysteria (1987): 12x Platinum (12 million, RIAA).

• Why They Rank High: Def Leppard’s polished hard rock/metal sound dominated the ‘80s. Pyromania and Hysteria were massive, with Hysteria spawning seven hit singles and selling over 25 million worldwide by the early ‘90s. Their crossover appeal rivaled pop acts.

• Context: Often labeled “hair metal,” their production and hooks made them a commercial powerhouse.

• Mötley Crüe

• Key Albums: Shout at the Devil (1983, 4x Platinum), Theatre of Pain (1985, 4x Platinum), Girls, Girls, Girls (1987, 4x Platinum), Dr. Feelgood (1989, 6x Platinum).

• Sales: ~10 million (U.S.). Their “hair metal” dominance and MTV presence drove sales.

• Note: They rivaled Bon Jovi in the glam metal scene but had less global reach.

You can’t include 1982-1992 and then exclude 1991.

The crue should certainly be on the HOF by the way.

We need to talk about the real issue here.

Garth Brooks has sold 170 million albums.

Agreed. No Iron Maiden, Motorhead, Motley Crue, Billy Idol but Salt N Pepa made it

Yes - Iron Maiden, Motley Crue, Billy Idol

No - Motorhead

Others who should be in - Three Dog Night, Grand Funk Railroad, Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Alice in chains, John Denver and The Carpenters.

It's become the popular music hall and fame. And if rappers, hip hoppers and folk artists are in, the last two on my list belong.

Def Leppard…AC/DC…Guns and Roses…Van Halen…lots of bands were bigger.

Yeah, we've talked about those great bands. The Gunners and Metallica certainly overtook them. The others seem to be as big.

The main point was just that Motley belonged in the HOF. Like them or not.

That 'Looks That Kill' riff is still fire. It just grabs you.

I didn't realize people were going to be so butthurt about my opinion of Motley Crue. My bad. Maybe go listen to your Taylor Swift playlist and relax.

Oh, I don’t know, Bon Jovi, Guns N Roses, Metallica, Def Leppard, Poison, Scorpions, Aerosmith, Judas Priest, Van Halen, etc. G’N’R was the biggest band in the world from ‘87-‘92.

Motley Crue is/was awful. Nikki Sixx was such an awful bass player that they had to bring in a ringer for recordings (I’m a bassist; it ain’t that hard, especially playing mostly root notes) AND they’re fuckin’ Milli Vanilli in concert! Probably because Vince Meal, I mean Vince Neil, has a vocal range of half an octave.
Personally, I consider Van Halen more hard rock then a metal band.

Joe Cocker kinda sucked not gonna lie. Never wrote a song in his life
As someone else said earlier in this thread, I think that‘s what was being held against Joe Cocker…he recorded covers and didn’t write anything. I’m not in a position to judge so congrats to his family but shitty to wait until he dies to finally induct him.

I saw this thread pop up in the Football board and my first thought was "We had a player named Joe Cocker???" Then I saw I apparently posted in here 11 years ago.

I have said before,... but if I could go back in time to any tour from the golden era of stadium tours, the Cocker 'Mad Dogs and Englishmen' tour in the early 70's might be the choice.

Also, reading through the thread, a lot of Cocker's hits were covers, we all know that, but he wrote numerous songs during his career. The notion that he only did covers and never wrote his own songs is needlessly hyperbolic.

Cocker was hot in my hey day, but the truth of the matter is that his biggest hits were written by someone else with a number of them covers. Hs greatest Hits had 12 tracks. Nine written by someone else. Doesn't mean the guy didn't deserve to be in the HOF.

I was thinking about bands like REO Speedwagon, the Guess Who, Boston, and BTO the other day. Do you guys think they should be in the HOF?

I've lost all hope for the RRHOF. They're a joke. You have rappers and bubblegum pop stars and country artists in, but it took forever to get Cocker in and very successful influential bands like Boston and The Guess Who aren't in. No idea any longer what their criteria is for induction other than to irritate actual music fans.

This is where I think the HOF is a joke. Guess Who without a doubt. They were a major act and produced a lot of hits in the 60's and 70's. REO was also big back then and produced a number of hits. Without researching I would guess both had more hits than Boston and BTO. Boston basically had one album, but it was a huge success. I liked BTO, but not sure I would put them in, but given some that are in, why not?

Good posts guys. Thanks. I'm thinking REO and the Guess Who should probably get in. Boston and BTO may be on the outside looking in. The hall of very good, as Peter King would say.

Boston should absolutely be in, I'd put them first. I would put Guess Who in next. Then Speedwagon. Then BTO. Each band had multiple hits and weren't one hit wonders.

Not being argumentative because we all have our own taste, but The Guess Who had something like 15 top 40 hits. I don’t think Boston had near that many. Not that I don’t like Boston, because I wore out their first album. Lol

Edit: google shows Boston had 9 top 40 hits. That’s more than I thought.

Between his time with The Guess WHO and BTO, Randy Bachman does deserve to be in.

I can only think of 5 Guess Who songs that I know: American Woman, No Time, These Eyes, No Sugar Tonight, and Share the Land. You sure you're not thinking of The Who? I'm kidding.

[EDIT] Don't know if it was Top 40, but I forgot about Clap For the Wolfman.

I have no particular opinions about what qualifies someone for entry in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - it seems like an inconsistent mess - but I have always sort of wondered at the confusing existence of both The Who and The Guess Who as major rock bands at roughly the same time.
So I just found this funny little story about the time The Guess Who decided to "confront" The Who about encroaching on their name, and were told, in British, to fuck off. They all became good friends.

Also reading through,… Motley Crew isn’t in the hof!? For real!? I never paid enough attention but that’s insane. I’m not even the biggest crew fan but they spawned an entire subgenre of rock that defined a whole decade. Idk how anyone can make a case against them.

This is something that is so stupid that I just have to ignore or I get all worked up over meaningless bs lol. Motley Crew should be a complete no brainer, among others obviously
