we'll (ND Nation) always have that obvious connection to the man... thoughts to his family... lots of memories

Before everyone goes waxing poetic about Hightower, remember that this man would not shake hands with any ND players after the 10-10 tie in 1966.

He didn't shake hands with them but he shoke the daylights out Hanratty in the first quarter, knocking him out fo the game. ND's Center, Goeddecke, went down right after Hanratty. Bubba had the ND medical staff working triage. I didn't like him but any sports fan had to recognize his dominance on a football field.

One of the few players in college who just "drew an X" through one whole side of the field as far as offense was concerned. And they had George Webster at linebacker to make your life miserable elsewhere. Fortunately we had Alan Page, Kevin Hardy, and Jim Lynch who were just as good. I still remember Bear Bryant saying that he wanted to play "the big people up north" and me rolling my eyes. If Alabama played ND and MSU back-to-back that year, their entire team would have been in the hospital [though they'd have given it a good shot in the first one before the "Red Cross Parade" began]. I imagine Smith gathering up the Alabama "Watch-charm" guards and heaving them into the backfield, knocking passers around like a bowling pin. Alan would have been slightly more civilized about it, but ... same result.
