Disappointed that you've forgotten what most people's reactions were on here when this thing first happened.

Almost everything I saw was, "Awful situation. Feel for the family. No one should ever have to go through this. Hope it doesn't turn into a race war down there."

Perhaps you should go back and read through the thread since that initial reaction. Empathy isn't checking a block by saying the right thing at the beginning of a situation ... it is a deeper understanding.

"Deeper understanding" flies out the window when you start burning down your neighborhood in the name of justice. That kind of behavior deserves neither understanding nor respect.

I suspect that every resident of Ferguson did not participate in arson. I think we would all do well to remember that the actions of a few are not representative of a whole community -- just as the actions of a few cops is not indicative of an entire police force. I condemned the behavior of those who hurt others, I just didn't condemn the entire community, which, incidently is the very group that we should all attempt to have a deeper understanding about. Your post seems to imply that all people are what the least of them do. I'd say if that is the case, that is a very closed minded approach to a problem that cries out for open-mindedness.

Protesters rioting against cops will bring them...more cops and national guard. Brilliant.

Prayers to the family.

You don't think protesters want more confrontation? they want the cops to lose it and fire on them, thus bringing more heat onto said cops and their superiors.

A total of ZERO shots were fired by the police. All 150(ish) came from the rioters.

Ferguson: Businesses Ablaze, Bullets Fly in Overnight Mayhem Over Grand Jury - NBC News

Convenient that NBC News mentions "150 shots fired" in the first sentence but doesn't mention that the police weren't responsible for any of them until paragraph 9. The media is disgusting in this whole thing. They absolutely love it and will fan the flames as much as they possibly can.

Great point Wizards. I was wondering all night if the police were engaged in gun battles. Also, all of the testimony that the Grand Jury heard went un-read by the rioters...they didn't seem too interested in the truth. Well I think that everything should settle down now that the Reverend Al Sharpton is on the way...NOT!

I contend that the cry of "black power" is, at bottom, a reaction to the reluctance of white power to make the kind of changes necessary to make justice a reality for the Negro. I think that we've got to see that a riot is the language of the unheard.

Police officer shot in U City. U city is a real nice area in the city a few miles south of Ferguson. Sounds of automatic gunfire in Ferguson. This is really productive. If anything, it's propagating race tension and racial based hate.

My wife works at the major hospital downtown (Barnes Jewish) and put her 2 weeks in for a new job out in the county last week. I'm tempted to make her take a sick day tomorrow. This is unreal.

I can't believe Title hasn't been banned. He's clearly just baiting everyone and spitting rhetoric. I mean, he changed his name just to proved us. Unreal.

Anyone who lets this change the way they view a race is already racist & looking for excuses.

I would be the first to say that I am still committed to militant, powerful, massive, nonMichigan-violence as the most potent weapon in grappling with the problem from a direct action point of view... But it is not enough for me to stand before you tonight and condemn riots. It would be morally irresponsible for me to do that without, at the same time, condemning the contingent, intolerable conditions that exist in our society. These conditions are the things that cause individuals to feel that they have no other alternative than to engage in violent rebellions to get attention. And I must say tonight that a riot is the language of the unheard.

So you are going to compare one car on fire, to over a dozen buildings on fire and over a 150 shots fired?

Let us say it boldly, that if the total slum violations of law by the white man over the years were calculated and were compared with the lawbreaking of a few days of riots, the hardened criminal would be the white man.

Riots solve nothing. Peaceful protest is fine (Not that it necessarily solves anything either), but advocating destruction of property ala rioting is just one step away from terrorism. All rioting needs is the threat of violence towards people before it can be classified as terrorism. Rioting never changes an outcome, and it only escalates the situation and helps reinforce stereotypes.

It only reinforces stereotypes in people who already believe them. Only a weak-minded person or someone who is already racist would demonize a group of millions because of a fit of anger. It does nothing, but it comes from a place where nothing can be done. It's helplessness and disenfranchisement turned into anger which turns into violence. Again, this is one night where it may not happen again, but it will lead to peaceful protesting and assessing the problem.

No one would have heard of Michael Brown if it wasn't for riots.
