Hi all,

Tonight, my wife and I attended the Notre Dame Club of Chicago’s Rockne Athletic Banquet. Brian Kelly was the main speaker.

For any avid reader of ND football sites, BK didn’t really say much that was new.

He discussed the QB situation, and said nice things about each QB. He did say that Golson, all too often, would throw a beautiful pass on one play and then would fumble the snap on the very next play. Regarding Kiel, he said he will be very special one day, but he is quite raw. Kelly made rather generic comments regarding Rees and Hendrix.

He discussed how they will line up Eifert all over the field. He also discussed CBs, safeties, and LBs rather generically. He said that our D-line and O-line were the real strength of the team, even with the absence of Lynch. Regarding Lynch, he said the same line as earlier. To succeed at ND, you have to have your heart and mind in it, and Lynch didn’t.

The one newsworthy note was that he really tried to set expectations for an 8 win season, and he strongly stressed the difficulty of the schedule.

All in all, it was nice to hear from BK, but if you follow ND football sites closely then you wouldn’t have heard anything new, except for maybe the stress on 8 wins.

Thanks for the writeup (reps incoming). Setting us up for eight wins? That doesn't sound like a very positive outlook. I realize the schedule is absolutely ludicrous, but it's year three and at this point, I would have liked to be back into the ten wins a season category. He's absolutely got to pull off a great win this year though. It's been too long.

Thanks for the info. I read your post on TOS. Without revealing a name, was the recent player you spoke with someone who played under Kelly or Weis (if you don't mind sharing that info)?

Post edited by NDinLA? Hmmm..... it's a conspiracy.........

8 wins would be a very solid year next year. Every single team on our schedule except for Purdue should go bowling.

Both, but I don't feel I should provide any more detail than that.

Kelly is also being cautiously optimistic about next year, if he expects 10 and gets 7, people will scream for his head, 8 win is fin by me, as long as we with that bowl game!

I know we expect 8 wins but for Kelly to strive for 8 wins is ridiculousvfor the coach of the university of notre dame.

Since when is 8 wins at ND an acceptable goal?

We haven't had 8 wins+ for 3 straight seasons in over 18 years. I can't make this crap up. 8 wins against our ridiculously impossible schedule next year will be fantastic.... and basically hinges on BYU, Stanford, and Miami all not being as good as they could be.

What the hell happened to "you don't come to Notre Dame to go 8-4" ???

Reality and the SEC no longer accepting "college students."

They now accept any limp cortex that can register many tackles...

Stanford just went to 2 consecutive BCS bowls. They're standards are higher then NDs

And Notre Dame is possibly in the National Championship discussion last year if Andrew Luck is our QB. Lets see how they fair this year.

so are a lot of teams.. I fail to see your point.. you're faulting Stanford for recruiting, signing and developing a #1 overall draft pick? I just don't really get what you're trying to say, no disrespect

I highly doubt that he specifically said were gonna shoot to win 8 games.

Here's a theory: BK can't come out and tell everyone that it's BCS or bust. He doesn't want to put his a$$ on the line and possibly get let go of after this year if they do have a mediocre year. Look at the schedule, on paper, it is the hardest schedule in years. I would take a 8 win season and then win the bowl game.

Guys, it has been pretty widely reported that what really hurt ND on the recruiting trail and regarding general expectations last year was that ND was branded a BCS team. When ND completely floundered, it really hurt us given the high expectations. Kelly knows that the BCS is very unlikely this year, so why set practically unattainable expectations for this year only to have it inevitably screw him in the end?
