Replacing Diaco

With the OC job, on one hand it would be nice to find someone with an Xs and Os guy who could help develop a discernable offensive identity, which is something we've generally lacked - beyond "take what the defense gives us" - under Kelly.
On the other hand, we've finally got a pipeline of talented QBs coming to fruition here, along with our stable of TEs and OLs and young depth at receiver, to run a sort of power spread. After several years of waiting for an offense, it feels like we're on the cusp of a great one. I'd hate to wind up with a guy whose system would lead us to hit the "reset" button on all that.
So if they go outside, I hope they don't go too far outside, if you know what I mean.

This is a great point. With defense, doing more of the same with a little better X's and O's is great. Just al little change.

On offense, there are some subtleties that speak of unbelievable potential.

Offensive line growing - with the best size and speed ever.

Offensive line with the ability to flip back sides for a left handed quarterback.

Three good young quarterbacks, the last two who have made the elite 11, one being left handed.

Dynamic running backs with eligibility.

All shapes and sizes of slot receivers that have had a good development year.

Off the hook wide receivers.

Off the hook tight ends.

(I mean it used to be having one great receiver was enough. Man we were rich with three guys that could catch the ball. Now we could be sitting on a dozen that could play . . . .)

meaningful minutes, and role players.

But don't you think if he was leaving or even making a decision, he would be down played or even not invited?

i could see not invited if he was leaving but if he attends i dont see why he wouldnt be introduced as dline coach, it is his title.

I think ya'll are reading too much into that statement. Kelly made a virtually identical statement just before Hinton and Warriner went to Ohio State.

Personal observations. Let's just say I think he needs some maturation.

Brilliant minds think alike.

I just came in from hours out operating the snow blower. Not just any snow blower. No, it is my daddy's snow blower. 42 inch auger. John Deere. Late 70's. I was fretting, having it rebuilt last year, but so far today we have had between a half and a foot of snow. I did like five neighbors drives half of the cul-de-sac, anything I could. I was laughing like a wild man. It was me and my dad throwing that snow today!

He passed just over nine years ago, but he was larger than life, so much so that his presence is still felt. One of the true wild Irishman I have known. He loved his toys. He would get out there and let it rip, in an alcohol fueled rampage. He sounded a horn, so that the neighbors all knew to have small children and pets off the street. And then he would get out their and let 'er rip! What athletic talent it must have taken to keep up with that thing, (as he used to say jokingly) never knowing which drive was the real one until he made that last minute guess! He must of been psychic, because we only ever had to pull him out of deep drifts a couple of times! Sláinte!

Pretty huge that Elston is staying. Think it gives us a very good chance of retaining Tuitt. Very, very happy.

Did you guys get it too? Man did it come down!

Hey LAX! I agree 100% with your intelligent contention that keeping Elston will maximize player retention. In fact, I just wonder if truth be told, Elston isn't the glue that kept the defense together from a coaching standpoint.

That being said, that is still only my second favorite reason for him staying. I truly believe that Mike Elston is a coach for the ages. If Kerry Cooks is selected as DC and he develops into a head coach, and leaves some day, I think we could do no better than Mike for a DC at that time. This is with Bobby Elliott making it clear that he doesn't want that.

This fall when the Kelly contract renewal was not getting completed, a number of rumors circulated. They made the hair on my neck stand on end. So much so that I asked my friend and his brother to make some calls. They are not necessarily insiders, but they know some people who hear everything. ND, after all is a relatively small school. All I could get is that there was some discordance. This with the fact that a certain assistant was not happy with his package, and a real change in the media presence of the staff, and there was little left to wonder.

The whole point of this is I stressed over the rest of the staff staying in place, (Yes, thank you Jesus!), and that for once the outward presentation of this be positive, after a year of horrible press on terrible issues, (did I say a year?) And it happened. I truly feel that ND and Kelly have reached a turning point. So, I don't think Kelly has to have the twin home runs he got in hiring Harry and Bobby. (Harry would be God's own offensive line coach. And God would look for ways to delegate authority to him.)

Bobby gets lost. Kelley even referred to having Bobby on the back end as a reason handling the "transition" on defense would be so easy. But what a wonderful opportunity for the young men that are ND football players to know and work with Bobby Elliott. His example since he has been at ND is one for the ages, too. I have met a few brilliant lights to shine the way on the dark path that is life on this earth, enough to know that he is one!

Not to go all Coonja on you, but rumors from who? The wait staff? Players? Coaches? Recruits?

A friend of mine is pretty tight with all the coaches. He has taken me to some of the parties at their homes and stuff. He is the one I always turn to with questions. Not sure who made the statement, but he text me from the banquet.

We got about 4-5". It started thawing and now it's snow with a layer of ice on top. Driveway is an ice rink.

I hate when that happens. It is the ice on top! We did 8-9 inches. I owned the block with my daddy's bad ass snow blower and instant weather machine. (If it isn't snowing when you use this it will be, within about 30 feet!

With our roster the 4-3 is very doable. I'd like us to run sort of a Seahawks type of 4-3. We have the personnel for that.

Would we have a realistic shot at Ken Norton Jr., linebackers coach of the Seahawks. I would think he would be a great hire.
