Can a player say I will pay for my 5th year to free up a scholly and become a preferred walkon?

Let's say Dayne becomes the starter and wants to come back for his 5th year.

Can he say, I will pay for my 5th year to free up a scholly and become a preferred walkon?

If a kid's family is loaded, why not?

And I just used Dayne as an example.

Is it NCAA legal is the question I am asking.

As far as the NCAA is concerned, the kid after a severe head injury pay his own way.

Yea, I guess there could be a situation where that could happen. But then again, I have never seen it done. Btw, I don't think Dayne's parent are loaded.

In this scenario I guess it we were at our limit going into the next year, and we needed a Scholly for UBER stud recruit, I imagine one of the 5th year fringe guys would be denied their 5th year to make room.

It's legal. A kid that played basketball at UNC went to Roy and gave up his scholarship a year after getting it

Yea... I didn't mean that it's impossible. But, I just can't see that situation of a starter giving away his scholarship for a recruit happening next year...

Yeah but I don't think his question was whether it would happen this year with Notre Dame, I think he was just curious about how such a player would be regarded by the NCAA for purposes of determining compliance with scholarship limits and the like.

So, to answer the poster's question, yes a player could absolutely forfeit his scholarship, pay tuition, remain on the team and allow another player to use that scholarship.
