I'm doing this little thing on my blog where I'm rating Notre Dame's opponents for 2011. So far I have Wake Forest, Navy (I know), and Purdue as 12, 11, & 10. I think BC might be next.

Where do you guys think ND's opponents rank against each other? I'm pretty sure Stanford is the strongest, and Wake Forest is the weakest, but everything in between is up for debate.

Dont know but I'd put USF as the toughest with Michigan at #2.

Win those two and the rest of the schedule gets alot easier.

The top four are pretty easy: 1) Stanford, 2) USC, 3) MSU, and 4) UM.

As are the bottom two: 12) Wake Forest, and 11) Purdue.

The other six are all jumbled in the middle. We should be favored against all of them, but you could argue about the precise order all day.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Stanford will be so good. They won't! Last season was a one time thing only. Yeah they still have luck, but they lost a lot of guys on both sides of the ball. And Harbaugh is gone. There's no way they will have another season like last year. It just won't happen.

I somewhat agree in that I don't see them in national title talks deep into the season... but I still think they'll be one of our toughest opponents... especially late in the year on the road... I also feel the same way about MSU... don't expect the same record from them at all

Air Force 5th toughest opponent??? I think they belong more in the 9,10 range.

USC
Stanford
Michigan St.
Michigan
USF
Pitt
Maryland
BC
Navy
Air Force
Purdue
Wake

We're always thrown for loops in college football with surprise (good and bad) teams by the end of the year...so I wouldn't be surprised if all of our lists looked different come December!

I am very much stuck in the line of thought that says we should fear any kind of an athlete at QB... pretty much sums up my honest feelings of this program right now...

Fear is a terrible thing.

Welcome to the clean slate theory.

This "poll" seems like a lot of polls created wherein it isn't obvious just what the respondents are really supposed to be rating. I feel that some folks are answering different questions. Just to be controversial, if I had to rate our opponents on a generic "who's the best team?" basis, I'd go:[you don't have to agree, this is just "my turn"] ....
1). USC
2). Stanford
3). MSU
4). Maryland
5). USF
6). Pitt
7). Michigan
8). Air Force
9). Boston College
10). Navy
11). Purdue
12). Wake Forest.

If I was trying to guess which games would end up being our toughest fights [physical battles], I'd go:
1). USC
2). MSU
3). Pitt
4). BC
5). Michigan
6). Maryland
7). Stanford
8). USF
9). Air Force
10). Navy
11). Purdue
12). Wake Forest.

If I was going to rate which games were most important to win, I'd go:
1). USC ["We're BAAAACK!!"]
2). Michigan ["We're BAAAAAAAAAACK!!!!"]
3). USF ["Watch out world, here we come!!"]
4). Navy [" The nonsense is OVER!!"]
5). MSU ["We're the tough guys on THIS block!!"]
6). Stanford ["Hey!! We're REALLY good!!"]
7). Wake Forest ["No embarrassments this year!"]
8). Purdue { see above}
9). Boston College ["tough fight guys, but we're King again"]
10). Pitt ["Why can't you ba$tards just lie down and get your whipping?"]
11). Maryland [...dangerous bunch of dudes who are going to beat some folks in the ACC... we'd recover from this slip if it happened]
12). Air Force [ if it happened everyone would credit the hero-AFers and we had some weird day off].

Note each list has different criteria. The first is simple excellence. The second is physicality plus rivalry. The third is national psychology. I'm not sure which one is being asked for.

In one way, of many, I can see this as legit.

I just think USF will be a bust; I like Skip, just sayin'.

Old Man Mike, you are right there are many ways to look at it. THe responses are all over the board. As a general consensus it is my opinion that Michigan will be easier than everyone says and Air Force will be tougher than everyone says.... Of course that is just my opinion, I could be completely wrong.

I liked JK's except for this right here... USF will be a game.

Steele likes USF. He pegs them as his #5 Surprise Team in '11 (ND is #2). Holtz like Kelly is in his second year there. And like Kelly at previous stops, UCon and ECU, he got players to overachieve. USF graduated some people but Steele has them as his #25 Preseason Team. Holtz's and his OC will be in their 7th year together.

IF we have a QB out of the gate hitting receivers rather than hitting their feet, the decent running game we expect, AND the Defense continues the way it ended last season, ND could roll in this game. USF isn't USC but then, neither was Tulsa.

I don't understand why everyone thinks Stanford will be so good. They won't! Last season was a one time thing only. Yeah they still have luck, but they lost a lot of guys on both sides of the ball. And Harbaugh is gone. There's no way they will have another season like last year. It just won't happen.

They did lose a bunch of starters but have key core returners at QB (Hiesman favorite), RB, LT, RG, LBs. Their starting TE last year went down in the first game and was lost for the season. He's back this year but doesn't count as a returning starter. Steele ranks them with #1 QB and the 10th Best Backfield. IF the OLine jells (they open with SJS and DUK) they're gonna put up a lot of points and can run the clock.

Harbaugh is gone but Shaw was the OC that made that Offense hum. STs are expected to be better. They have Co-DCs which I think is a question mark and they replace people in the secondary but they shouldn't be porous.

Steele doesn't think they'll be as dominant as last year BUT he picked them to finish 2nd in PAC 10 before Oregon's troubles surfaced. He has them as his preseason #16 team. Their OOC's are SJS, Duke, and ND. Their road games, Duke, AZ, WSU, USC, ORS had only 1 bowl team (USC ineligible). They should win 10 games in the regular season with their schedule.

I think AF will be tougher than most expect for a "service academy". Holtz had problems with AF and Kelly and Diaco fared worse with Navy than Weis did. Last year AF beat Navy 14-6 a couple of weeks before Navy ran all over ND 35-17.

They were 9-4 last year with losses to OU, by 3, SDS by 2 with a blown 2 pt conversion, got ripped by TCU 38-7, and lost to Utah by 5 but outgained them by about a hundred yards.

They only return 14 starters but that's the most Calhoun's had returning since he's been HC. He's 38-14 over 4 years, winning 8 twice and 9 twice. 8.5-4.5 annually. He's the winningest percentage coach in AF history.

Steele picks AF as #30 preseason he sees 9 wins, more if the wingwipers can beat BSU, ND or TCU.
