I'm always a bit perplexed by the people who lecture us about how the Native Americans had their land stolen from them or how US Blacks should receive reparations, but don't voluntarily do what they say all the rest of us should do. It's like the folks who say we should pay higher taxes or provide more of this or that to some people. OK, nobody's stopping you from voluntarily paying the higher taxes you think are just, and nobody's stopping you from donating or whatever to the cause you think is deserving. Yet they don't.
If someone steals a guitar and sells it to me, when the thief is identified and it's learned who he sold the guitar to, I have to give it back. Just because I didn't steal it doesn't mean that I get to keep it. If you believe the Native Americans were robbed and this is their land, give your home and land back to them. Now. Don't lecture anyone about how we all should be forced to return the land to the Natives until you do so. There's absolutely no law prohibiting you from just saying, "I'm living in a house built on land that was stolen from tribe "XYZ" a century or two ago. I can't keep stolen property, so I'm giving it back to them." If you can't do that, then stop the self-righteous, hypocritical lecturing the rest of us.
If you believe the descendants of former slaves in the US deserve reparations, that's fine. Nobody and no law is stopping you from giving a significant portion of your wealth to Black families. Sell part of your land or investments. Sell your house and move to a smaller, less expensive one. Cash in 10% or 20% of your wealth and do your part. Give your house to a poor black family.
I wouldn't lecture anyone about how I think everyone should be forced to donate $100 per week to a food bank or children's hospital, or forced to give up all petroleum powered vehicles unless I was doing so myself. If I thought it was important enough for the government to force it upon everyone, I'd already be doing it while I was attempting to get (or force) others to do so.
If you believe this land was stolen from the Native Americans and should be returned or that Blacks deserve reparations, don't let the lack of laws compelling everyone to do those things stop you. Set the example. Show us your sincerity. Be the change you want to see.
