This is why I dont do pets. Love playing with my friends pets. But they are always a sad when the little furry friend dies. Don't have any desire to do that.

It hurts losing a dog, sometimes more than some extended family members. It probably shouldn't, but there's something to be said for a loyal pet that loves you unconditionally and is with you every day through thick and thin. Dogs can be so empathetic, and a good one is sometimes irreplaceable. Sorry for your loss, Razor.

Our bulldog Mackie girl passed a few months back,… it sucked but at least it happened quick. My cat Timon passed like six years ago right after my father passed. That was tough as the was MY cat and my super buddy. I have another black cat now named Calabaza or Cali for short and she follows me around just like Timon. It’s amazing the comfort pets can bring.
Damn, I think I remember you coming on here and talking about getting Mackie years ago. Weren't you on the fence about getting a dog, having been a cat person for so long? Do you feel differently about dogs now?

Yep. Mackie was exactly what we thought,… a big cat. Low energy, loving and chill… I’d def get another English bulldog. Still not much of a dog person when it comes to most other breeds but that’s just me.

If that's your type, I would not suggest ever getting a border collie lol. We just got one back in October. After my wife's willful chihuahua passed at 74 years old (We had a love/hate relationship. He loved to pee on our stuff, and I hated it) I was looking for a smart breed that was easy to train. So we got the border collie. Don't think I've ever had a dog that was this loving and energetic, she practically smothers us 24/7 with affection and has endless energy. She's also too damn smart for her own good, she picks up tricks quick...like figuring out how to open the doors in the house at 5 months old. If we didn't have locks I'd have to switch all the doors from handles to door knobs. She also figured out how to pull out heavy bins so she can chew the kid's shoes. Fortunately she's outgrowing that stage a bit and learning to leave the shoes alone.

If you're looking for other low energy breeds Boxers are great family pets. Like most dogs they have a bit more energy as puppies, but once they're out of that stage they're pretty chill and like laying around.

Sorry to hear that, Razor. Your post cuts deep, it's a pain unlike most others. Dogs give us so much with unconditional love, loyalty, and joy. It's a bond like no other.

The best advice I can give from personal experience is to give yourself some time to heal, a month or two at the very least, and then maybe consider if you're ready to adopt or purchase another dog. I believe it's important to give yourself proper time to grieve from what you lost before you "replace" the dog. Doing so too soon could potentially lead a slight resentment of the new dog, as you might find yourself comparing the new dog to the old, which could be frustrating if there are growing pains in the training of said new dog.

It sounds like you're a lot like me and you're just a dog guy through and through, so no matter what you'll give the new dog a good home and be a great owner. I know just personally, when you lose YOUR dog, it's a tough pain to process and you might find yourself not bonding the same with the new dog until you're really ready. Just one mans opinion. Just a small amount of time to process before you make the decision.
