I went to the game today. Some thoughts:

Sign me up to join the Fire Chris Ash crowd.

I dont care how many injured players in the DB corp there were. It is clear, philosophically, that he wants to sit in zone and hope a four-man front gets home.

Just get rid of him now and MFMF and Mickens can run the defense for the year.

Purdue just hung 30 on us
Take a moment and let this sink in. Purdue only scored 31 points against a terrible Ball State team. The same Ball State team that may have been lucky to have Indiana all conference football players throughout its roster. Now imagine how many top defensive recruits are on Notre Dame‘s team.

The problems on defense might not be an execution or play calling issue.

Remember when Kelly finally fired BVG and the defense played WAY better after that?

This is a coaching problem. How well do the players like and respect Chris Ash?
I remember that our defensive efficiency jumped 30 points in one week. But I don't think that happens here. The problem with BVGs system was that no one understood it and opponents got bonus TDs with no defender on screen. Here the secondary just a step too slow.

The secondary is slow because they’re confused and trailing, not because they all lost a step between the OSU game and now.

One thing you missed was the broadcast sharing that we're playing the same man/zone ratio as last year. You're correct that we're blitzing less, however, especially on third down, as Chris Ash presumably does care about all the injuries/inexperience/incompetence and may be less suicidal than you.

Why are fans trying to explain away the defensive disaster? The "injuries/inexperience/incompetence" explain a small drop. Not a drop to the bottom of CFB.

And it's not just a drop from last year. We've consistently had good defenses every year since 2017, basically top 20 in points allowed through a variety of personnel ups and downs and injuries and experience. It has been the cornerstone of our program through its best era in three decades

What else have we had every year since 2017? A good defensive coordinator.

Now we look like a mediocre Big 12 team on that side of the ball. What changed? It isn't just because Leonard Moore rolled his ankle.

1. Price is the best RB in college football
2. ND needs to throw a bag at price and get him to return next year
3. Can any insiders confirm who was actually calling plays in the second half on defense?
4. I think Golden is gonna be a star for the defense once he gets experience he’s either starting nickle next year or starting opposite Moore.
5. My top defensive coordinator this offseason is Bryant Haines not sure if he would come he’s been with the head coach for 11 years. Other options: Ted Monchino Maryland, Shiel Wood Texas Tech, Jay Hill BYU
6. Where is Greathouse

- Tae Johnson with 70 snaps which led the team. Did indeed bench Stroman once Shuler returned, thank god.

- Sneed with only 14 snaps

- Elijah Hughes w/ a pressure and 4 tackles in 25 snaps.
I’m really starting to wonder about the wisdom of playing so much nickel when it means we have to play DBs who aren’t good/experienced while sitting LBs who are good and experienced.

Faraimo and Ausberry had 61 snaps combined. Sneed’s issue is he appears to now be behind Ausberry and the coaches now want to see Faraimo more too. Another off-season hype train storyline down the drain. I’m sure Sneed will have a role, potentially large, in certain games as he did last year but the reality seems to be he’s never fully put it together. Sneed has also never been know as someone who can cover, a 3 LB set should be KVA - Bowen - Ausberry if anything. Ausberry has cross trained in the slot.

Oh other snap count - Karson Hobbs: 0.

Unless he was injured, which I’ve not seen any indication he is, I said it in the game thread this seems indicative of a week of practice the coaches did not like. There are some off season quotes I believe about Hobbs thinking he’s the best and stuff like that which when you’re good sounds like typical CB swagger stuff. When you’re bad sounds like head case tbh.

Sneed was a great recruit and struggled, seems it took him some time to grasp the concepts. Now we have changed things and he is struggling and it seems like Al golden knew how to maximize him.

Yes I understand that you have to adopt to everyone and some players just can’t do that. But he was another player the beat was so positive about.

Wasn't it reported they are essentially switching him from Nickel back to pure CB?

The man vs. Zone only tells half the story, though. You can't sit in zone and not bring pressure. You will get picked apart. You can't man up and not bring pressure. As you said, that is suicide. The whole idea of our in your face man defense working is because of our exotic blitz packages and getting after the passer. If a WR has a step, but we have a blitzer in the QBs face, thats where we get the errant throws and the picks, sacks, etc.

That being said, go back and watch film from last year. It also isnt just blitzing to blitz. Al used a lot of movement and twists to get pressure. The lineman were confused of where the pressure is coming from. From me just watching it on TV, it seems like our pressure, when we do finally bring some, are just the simple fire A gap variety.

I thought Golden was masterful at this last year.

Explains why we saw Hughes so much. Weird. Interior DL did a good job regardless.

I have nothing to back it up but I assume dinged up.

But that’s also a complete guess and counter to my Hobbs post.

Interesting snap counts zero snaps for Hobbs or Dawson. Seems like Hobbs is in the dog house. Now if they could just do the same for Knapp he has no business playing LT

I promised my daughter a movie at a certain time and the delay ran almost right into that so I only saw pre delay,… but the defense was super concerning. In fact most issues from the first games were still there, just against a lesser opponent. Did the second half feel more, ‘get right’??

CJ needs to be given the 3 next year.

Dude is a THE dude.

Hopefully Troy is looking for a head coach next year and we lose Ash. I for one will be so broken hearted over that.

Last post season one of the IE members shared the all 22 film. If you’re still out there I’d love to see this seasons all 22. I’d really like to see actual D snaps… alignment, pressure, coverage etc. I don’t think I’m dreaming the total confusion pre-snap?!?!
