So as some of ya'll know I am a portrait artist. I've been looking to get my name out more and more.

I've recently been paying attention of others techniques in all different fields. Something I noticed is that people will put cards or flyers on my windshield or in my driver side door. I normally glance and either stash them in my glove compartment or trash them but does anyone know how effective that tactic is?

I tried to look for statistics but it doesn't appear to be a very well documented or at least I have no idea where to look.

Any help would be appreciated.

Direct mail has about a 1-3% conversion rate. I'd say windshield flyers probably rate about the same. I'd say make the rounds of local networking groups maybe join some area social groups. Granted, portrait artistry is pretty specialized work, so this is just generally speaking. But you're better off making a few strong connections who can potentially help you, rather then shot-gunning. I hope that helps.

I have a friend who put business cards in pay phone booths (good luck finding one today) when he started out as an independent insurance agent. It did get him quite a few clients. But I suspect the uninsurables he was chasing are not your target market.

What is your target market? Babies? 50th Anniverary? Newly minted Business Executives? Debutantes? Wedding?

What is your fee range?

Do you do portraits from photos or require sittings?

I don't see people paying $$$$ based on a windshield flyer.

Social Media man.

Set up a campaign where you target a specific age range in a certain location.

So say you want to target young families to get a portrait...you simply put in the age/sex/town.

It's cheaper than printing 1000's of windshield stickers and wasting your time sticking them on cars that you have no idea who drives them.

Plus, on Social Media, you can give them an immediate and quality look at an example of what you do.

Personally I hate it when someone puts something on the windshield of my car. Typically when you're parked somewhere like a grocery store or a park there isn't always a trash can within 50 yards so I either have to hang onto the flyer until I get home or I'm walking a good distance to pitch it because that's my first instinct. Don't touch my car! Grumble, grumble, grumble...

That said, I would go with social media as previously outlined. Ask people to share your stuff if they like it, and to forget it if they don't. I guess you need to identify your target market and go after that. Who typically desires portraits? More affluent members of the community? New parents? Find the target market and then think about where you'll find them. Offer a promotion, women love spending money if they think they're saving...yeah, it doesn't make much sense.

yeah social media is good, get an etsy page maybe also. if you are going to put flyers on cars make sure its at events like graduations etc, sticking them randomly otherwise does not sound like a good idea

Charity auctions might be a good way to get into some social circles. Offer a portrait for auction with a sample and stack of cards at the event. When you see how much it auctions for it can give you excellent data on price points and demand.
