You realize that the defense was actually really solid under Diaco, right? Kelly had improved the defense tremendously from the Weis Era... But yeah, bvg has caused that all to change.

In hindsight it seems that way, but Diaco was setting up to take a fall in 2014. He got out when the getting was good. 2013 was just the start of bad injuries, he spent a good part of the season without a healthy Tuitt and Nix, and Grace had that leg break. Losing your NT and MLB is the equivalent to complete disaster in a 3-4. To make matters worse, we struck out on our NT and MLB recruiting at the end of Diaco's tenure. Jarron was about all we had. We were lucky to pickup Cage late once Diaco took off, Diaco wasn't going to recruit him. We would have lacked the strong NT/MLB combo that you need to make the 3-4 system work, it would have been the equivalent of the Safety depth we're missing right now...except far, far worse. Diaco would have lost his leverage to get a HC position if he stuck around for 2014, and he probably knew it, which is why he took the crappy UConn job.

Kelly showed exactly why Saban is considered the best in CFB and he isn't.
Saban had the same QB situation against USC, but when it became clear who was best for the team Saban made the call Kelly can't.

BVG and Luongo need to go. Soft defense who got pushed around all game long.
Kelly won't pull the trigger and will end up fired because of it.

I expected this crap from the defense but i had high expectations with the offensive line and they have been awful, zero push and the Texas DL won the battle easily.

- Kizer is a Heisman candidate
- Adams is better than Folston
- Hunter and ESB looked great, also Saunders
- The left side of the OL was bad and it is a surprise. Actually i think Bars was the best of the bunch. Nelson is one of my favourites but he looked bad.
- Alize Jones is a big loss at TE.
- Rochell was the best defensive player yesterday
- Morgan is always around the ball but he has no clue how to line up defensively, looked lost at times.
- Secondary was a disaster.

Saban had two inexperienced QBs.. That situation is way different.. You can't give Zaire one drive then not put him in again.. Kelly messed up with going to the split in the first place...

Kelly isn't getting fired.. That's crazy talk.. BVG will be fired but this isn't the pros.. Coaches just don't get axed in the middle of the season. It kills recruiting.. Defensive players want to know who or what system they are going to. BVG will be let go at end of the season, which makes me beyond happy, and Kelly needs to go get a good DC... MI got a steal getting Brown from BC.. I want to see something like that

Shit I didn't want to acknowledge because I love Lyght but he coaches the DBs.

Let's play bump and run on a WR with Olympic speed, fail to bump him, turn and peak into the backfield and then sprint and watch him catch a ball for a TD. Does ND really teach this technique? If you're bump and run you have to get a jam at the LOS. Coaching can fix this problem, but Kelly will go to the grave protecting his buddy BVG and there's no way he'll bring in a high profile guy to take limelight from him.

I just watched the presser and understand slightly what took place here, but does one have help in cover 3? I guess the technique would suggest there was help over top? Please advise.

11 game win streak starts next Saturday. Texas is a good team. No such thing as a good loss but ot to Texas when trailing by 17 is going to look better when Texas contends for a big 12 title. It's kizer from here on. Love Zaire, get him in at wr or something he's a playmaker that we can use. D needs to play way better and I think they can. Tough way to start the season but proud of the fight they showed.

BvG doesn't recruit, it would likely help recruiting

Could not agree anymore with your post. I am absolutely sickened at this result. I am more sickened than the BushPush fiasco. And the reason is that Texas honestly didnt deserve to even be in the game with us. If it wasnt for the absolutely horrendous playcalling by Kelly and switching QBs at the worst possible time, combined with BVG's inability to understand what football is, we win by 3 touchdowns.
Kizer was the man. Unreal showing by him in only about 2 1/2 quarters worth of play.
Its really sad our season is over Week 1...people are going to absolutely tear apart our D, and we can't score 47/game.
Thank God I just got a new job that forces me to work Saturdays...I dont think I could put up with this shit all season.
P.S.- I am sick to my stomach that we made 'Kelly-Weis Contract #2'. We have to deal with this shit for 6 more years??!!!?

They have some good recruits but when tour defensive coordinator barley recruits what else do you expect. BVG is worse than the titanic.

BK is steaming as he should be , he's pissed with Drues play, the refs sucked and he pretty much is not sugar coating it. I like to see this

It's clear Kelly is going to give HIS boy MZ every chance which makes no sense. Kiser needs to be the starting QB for ND football.

I swear if MZ becomes a sour puss i'm going to lose my mind. DK played his balls off and MZ needs some more seasoning, it's clear. He needs to step up in the pocket instead of trying to get outside all the time. Kizer goes north/south much better and just has that right feel.

Has nothing to do with last year. If we played Defense to the level of a high school team we would've beaten Texas tonight. If our coach didn't keep running the same play 40 times to become the most predictable team in the country, we would've won. If he could realize how much better Kizer is than Zaire we win. I can keep going. It's not difficult to see.

LOL @ you. You crazy SOB! I see what you did there! But, really; there's no need to throw the offensive strawman out there. The Defense cost us the game. That's obvious, and they are going to have to own it. But you are cracking me up over here. (40 points and he complains that we are the most predictable offense in the country)......you crazy man, you! Good one.

See I thought Morgan played good. To me it looked like the confusion was always the DB's not knowing where go line up and Morgan trying to get them there. And all in less than 5 seconds from the previous tackle. The pace Texas ran with created some of the issues we had on D. It slowed down the pass rush and gave their WR another step up on our DB's.

Question in the targeting? What's the process in CFB for a TD reception. Torii landed with 2 feet prior to the ball being dislodged.

Process of the catch. He did not maintain possession through the complete process.

Very predictable ending. The last two possessions on offense of regulation we needed to be more aggressive. We knew the defense wasn't going to stop them but we could've put the game out of reach.

Non call on the targeting of hunter was maddening. How do they miss that?

Blocked extra point and return was awesome.

Loved sanders' punt returns. I'm still used to John "fair catch" Goodman.

Defense is horrible. I understand the safeties are bad, but why can't we tackle? Why can't we get any pressure? cage? tillery? Trumbetti? jones? Did they even play?

Something small but unnoticed was how bad our field position was even after the 15 yard penalty on the kickoff when the score was 37-37. If we had the ball at around the 40 yard line to start that drive it's a different story.

Let's be honest, Texas was going to win that game in regulation if they hadn't done that chop block.

When u know your defense isn't going to get a stop u need to go for the other team's throat on offense

Reminded me of the Stanford game. D was awful overall but had some key stops to allow the offense to come back. Then the D couldn't come through at the end.

Also an impact moment that Yoon got his extra point blocked.

Can you really not see it? Kelly has about 5 plays at his disposal. Run up the gut, qb run, etc., I have multiple friends texting me admitting how bored they are watching it. We have an incredibly vanilla offense. If we did what Texas did last night, or what Oregon or Houston dies, we could look electric. What I'm talking about isn't crazy. Weis ran a better offense than this.

A few. Texas stopped themselves more often than not.

Bad fundamentals from the defense. Can't get lined up timely. Can't wrap up and tackle. Bad hips in coverage. No push up front. Seemed like some conditioning issues. There's definitely coaching and talent issues but playing with some fundamentals would have taken some points off the board and allowed the offense to win that game in a shoot out.

Now that I have had the time to sleep on it and digest what happened, I still am in complete disbelief about the ineptness of the defense. 500 yards and 50 pts to a freshman? Unbelievable.

I don't care about electric. I care about points. If Kelly can continue to score 40 points off of only 5 plays, then I am good with that. It's not that you are wrong about the offense being vanilla. It's that it DOESN'T MATTER, as long as they continue to score 40 points with it. The LAST fvcking thing I care about, in regards to ND football, is how excited your friends are to watch it.

Alright BK, if you are listening, I am throwing my hat into the ring. I have no doubt that I could do a better job of coaching than BVG. My defenses have always been very solid. Granted it is not at the D1 level, but I think after watching last night, I could do better with scheme, technique, and fundamentals. I can coach safeties as well, so I can slide right in. I recruit tirelessly very well and build great relationships with the kids so I know I would outperform BVG significantly there. And the kicker, you don't even have to pay me the million dollars a year like you pay him. I will do it for half. You know the right thing, BK. Give me a holla. I'm sure neither one of us wants to make a midseason switch, but my defense is healthy and they could adjust. For the Irish, I would do it. Hear from you soon, BK.

The only problem relating to offense is that Kizer didn't get more opportunities to score.

The most encouraging thing I saw was when a FR WR (Stepherson) was lining up wrong and ESB smacked him on the helmet to get him fixed. It was late on the game. At least he was showing leadership. He will be special.

This post is a joke. Kelly offense is fine. They put up enough points to win last night. Kelly has a top 20 offense each year. I don't care if you and your friends find it boring to watch, it's effective and that's all the matters. I thought the toss to Hunter and throw back to Kizer was a cool play, but I guess it's Vanilla. Watching Sanders catch that screen and weave through traffic in OT was so boring and vanilla also I suppose.

Please!
