The Good
1. Ben Turk was fantastic today
2. Jonas Gray and Cierre Wood are turning out to be a pretty good 1-2 punch at RB.
3. Tyler Eifert is proving again that ND is Tight End U.
4. I finally saw Shembo and Flemming playing the way they finished the year last year.
5. Our defensive line did a great job against the run today except for that one run Graham broke
6. We won a game without Floyd having huge numbers. This is important because Floyd is gone next year and we need to know that we have other great players on offense, too.
7. Defense came up with a stop late in the 4th quarter with the game on the line.
8. The offense successfully ran out the clock late in the 4th quarter to prevent Pitt from getting the ball back.
9. Te'o, Slaugher, and Harrison Smith all tackled well.
10. Rees 8-for-8 drive for the TD.
11. Rees scrambling for a first down for the first time this season, I believe.
The Bad
1. Tommy Rees looked like he took a major step back today. He looked awful most of the game
2. The offensive line looked like the offensive line that used to allow Jimmy Clausen to take a beating every game and not like the offensive line that played so well the first 3 games.
3. We lost the turnover battle again and made multiple personal fouls.
4. Rees fumbles the ball every time he gets hit from the side. Notice how Pitt's QB didn't fumble ever and we completely blindsided him a couple of times.
5. We were outcoached. It looked like Pitt's defense had us completely caught off guard. What did they do that was so surprising? It's quite obvious that teams are going to try and take Floyd out of the game and to be honest we have enough weapons on offense that we should be licking our chops if they double team him.
6. What happened to David Ruffer this year? I know that the snap was bad but still...
7. Ever since Golden Tate left, our best case scenario on punt returns is a John Goodman fair catch.
8. I understand why Calabrese might struggle in coverage but why can't he tackle this year? Up until he was injured last year he was a ferocious tackler.
9. Dan Fox is horrible.
10. Do our opponents ever miss a field goal against us? Ever?
11. When it was 4th-and-20, i was screaming all i want from this punt is a Goodman fair catch. Even a monster punt and we get the ball around the 50 yard line. I don't understand why rush the punter there. Even if it technically was a ticky-tack call on Collingsworth, i still don't think the risk is worth the reward. We stopped them, it was 4th down, and we were going to get the ball back up 1 in great field position. Why call for a punt rush there??
Plays of the Game (in no particular order)
1. Rees' QB sneak on 4th and 1. Consider me pessimistic, but if he doesn't get it we either lose or go to OT.
2. Jonas Gray's huge TD run. It was pretty much the only good thing we did on offense in the first 3 quarters of the game.
3. Harrison Smith's tackle on Graham by the shoelace in the 2nd quarter. If Smith doesn't make that tackle Graham was ready for a huge run.
4. Prince Shembo chasing down Graham and catching him from behind. That saved us 7 points right there.
5. Cierre Wood's gutty run on 3rd and 3 on that game-winning drive right after he got hurt.
6. Eifert's first down catches at the end of the 1st half. We didn't get any points out of them because Ruffer missed the FG but it at least prevented Pitt from getting the ball back and scoring at least 3 points.
7. Stopping Pitt on the 2-point conversion
8. Converting our 2-point conversion
9. The drop by Pitt's Street on the 50 yard pass play.
10. Eifert's TD, obviously. Watching that replay makes me see that if Rees threw it half a second later it's probably an INT for a TD.
11. Lynch's sack with about 4 minutes left on 1st-and-10 right after Pitt was driving down the field and only about 10 yards away from FG range.
