We have to execute much better in big spots.

Kizer's play at the end of the first half likely cost us 3 points.

Carlise's drop likely cost us 4 points. (it might have even cost us 5 since it would've saved BK front a stupid 2-point decision later)

Also, there was 1 second left after Stanford made their field goal.

A great coach changes the d coordinator.

A good coach sticks with his friend and hopes things improve.

We will see what Kelly is. I think he is smart enough to know that the defense really under-performed considering the level of talent.

I love Todd Lyght, but I think something needs to be done in terms of coaching the secondary as well.

I'm not convinced we did underperform given all the injuries this D had. Given the absolute chaos that's going to happen this season in the coaching world, I think continuity is our best bet for now.

For me this was an easy season. With all the injuries early I definitely adjusted my expectations downward, and these guys continually impressed me week in and week out. These are a great bunch of guys and very easy to root for.

With that being said, completely unimpressed with the job coach Van Gorder has done, certainly would not mind seeing some changes there. Also, surprised by the lack of development and even regression on the back end of the defense. I have not made one comment about Joe Schmidt all year, because I truly respect the young man but, IMO he was a liability on the field for most of the year. The inability to get Nyles Morgan, Jarrett Grace, or anyone else ready to play says as much about BVG as it does about NM. Same goes for the inability to get two extremely gifted safeties ready to play at a higher level.

For me Kizer was tentative throwing the ball at times particularly in the redzone, I know he is young and the turnovers were in the forefront of his mind, but we can't kick that many field goals on the road when our defense is as porous as it is. For these reasons my game ball goes to Coach Denson. Helluva job this game and this year.

disappointed that Stanford punted what, once?

was hoping for a more "burn the boat" type of effort. it was the last game that could have placed them in the playoffs.

Loved Denson as a player and I love him as a coach. He was a great addition to the staff.

With all the coaching vacancies coming up what are the chances that some team will save ND and interview BVG???..

Less than Zero!!!!

Schmidt has a better chance of getting an interview than BVG!

Hiring your friend is a worse idea than loaning him money IMO. We will have less talent on D next year but if we ditched BVG and with Schmidt moving on we could be much better.

Can we please get something straight?? THE 2 POINT CONVERSION HAD ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH WHY WE LOST. Had Kelly taken the points early we would have been going for two at the end. You would be going for two after one of those scores regardless.

Now we wait and see who we have in 2016. Great season and honestly, much better game than I think anyone expected!

Agreed. ND put up over 500 yards of offense. Going for 2 in the third quarter was NOT a bad decision, when your offense is moving the ball like that.

I'm really proud of this team. (that sounds kind of weird, being proud of people you never met.)

They fought hard all season, winning 10 was a hell of an accomplishment and we could have gone undefeated.

We're gonna get a nice bowl game and have a balls team next year. I'm pumped.

The loss hurts, but very proud of the effort given all game long. The future is bright for the Irish.

Kelly has got us to a level where 9-10 wins should be a minimum every year. I am thankful for that.

BVG held McCaffery under a 100 yards. Hogan played best game of his life. We lost. Quit all the belly aching From the haters

Hogan shouldn't have played the best game of his life, though. If BVG was at all capable of in-game adjustments or our secondary was at all capable of executing on the fundamentals, we'd have won. Granted, our O left A LOT of points on the board, easily double digits, but they still did enough to win. 36 points should be enough to win and when your D is asked to just not give up 50 yards in less than 25 seconds, they should be able to do that.

That said, 2 road losses by combined 4 points. ND was THAT close to an undefeated season. With all these injuries no less? Damn impressive. I trust in BK to do what needs to be done in the off season. And a NYD bowl game is hardly the worst consolation prize for a snake bitten team this year.

I think if most of us can just remove ourselves from the emotion that comes with the disappointment of another heart-wrenching loss, we would all be damn happy and proud of what the team has accomplished son far this season.

HAVE to end bowl season on a high note for recruiting's sake.

Took Bk 6 Years to get his offense up and running but it showed this year between the 20's.

Josh Adams just keeps impressing.

Kizer to me the last 3 is a different Qb were had been seeing. I think Ziare might have a chance to get his job back.

Kelly looked tired the last 2 weeks.

Yoon was money.

The announcers were much better.

10-2 with the possibility of 11-2 is very good. But it doesn't tell all.

If BVG comes back neck year with out freaks like jaylon and day oh boy welcome to the big 10.

Those are two different things. I did think it was a bad decision to go for 2 at that time, but it didn't hurt us. Conversely, I thought it wan an okay decision at Clemson even though it did end up hurting us.

People are talking about Kizer being down on the final TD...I think he was down. But without a true side view, I didn't think there was a way to reverse that call. There was never an angle where you could truly see that the ball did or did not break the plane. Am I the only one?

Re-watched this game and it was even more painful the second time. We were the better team but couldn't get a call and couldn't get a stop. We had so many plays where if we had made one of them we would have won:

1. Opening drive spot on Stanford 3rd down
2. Incredible Stanford catch on their 2nd drive on 3rd down
3. Tillery jumping offside on 3rd down
4. Butler making an easy tackle
5. Kizer not fumbling
6. Carlisle not dropping the ball
7. If Kizer had taken off on the 2-point conversion play
8. If Butler wasn't called for a bogus PI
9. If the ref had overturned Kizer's TD
10. If Day had went for the sack on their final drive instead of trying to swat the ball
11. If Rochell doesn't get a face mask.

11-1 would've been so nice.

So let's fire the first year position coach and second year coordinator? Yeah, that sounds about right................. if you're the Cleveland Browns!

Only if you want to win.

BVG is garbage and if BK sticks with him, he will make the whole team stink.

No. None of the replays gave you a perspective where you could see the ball relative to the goal line, at the time his leg hit the ground. I am surprised that no one has come up with a coating for the ball that, when activated by a beam of some sort that represents the goal line, will fluoresce on a camera with a special filter. Then, when you see the fluorescent glow, you know the ball has broken the plane.

But in regards to the 2 point try........... they may be two different things, but one is definitely a major influence on the other. If you are moving the ball pretty much at will, you will have plenty of chances to score again later. So a gambling guy like Kelly is bound to take the risk.

Yes...we could have easily won this game. Made way too many mistakes on defense and a number on offense as well.

I know you all are hurting and angry.

I agree with kmoose, at the start of the season pretty much any of you would have been happy at 10-2 but now that we achieved it with the injuries we have had as well as defections, and by a total of 4 points, you guys are cheering that some of these guys are leaving and calling for the firing of at least a couple of coaches.

I am not exactly Sister Mary Sunshine and I know and am upset by a number of things from this season, but I have lived through a help of a lot worse.

Thank you boys for a great year and I look forward to a New Year's Day bowl considering we only lost to single digit ranked teams on the road.

Super post !!

I was impressed with the way we contained McCaffrey.

I absolutely love the guts of Kizer. He is going to be one of the great ones once he finishes his ND career.

That face mask call was a killer.

It was good to see Yoon emphasized by Showtime this week and then see him have another good game. He was a little shaky at the beginning of the year but straight money from game 3 on.

Please come back Jaylon.

Four points. Four stinking points.

At the beginning of the season I thought 10-2 would be a really good season. 10-2 with all the injuries we had makes this season that much better. This was the most fun team to watch in a long time. Every time someone went down due to injury, they seemed to get closer as a group. Even though the ending wasn't what I had hoped for, this team makes me proud to be a ND fan.

Four points...

1. Heartbreaking loss. This one really hurts because so much was on the line. But the game played out just about how you would have expected it to. A lot of offense, and one or two defensive plays really made the difference.

2. One thing that I think I noticed about this game........ It looked the coaching staff put the game on Kizer's shoulders, and said "win it or lose it for us". So you saw what you would expect from a very talented young QB; a gutty performance that was almost good enough, but not quite. I think this program is in very good hands for the near future.

3. The Secondary was once again subpar. And it wasn't even their top guys that killed us. Cajuste was their 4th leading receiver. And he just abused whomever the Irish put across from him. Some big plays were mental mistakes, which is infuriating, but part of the game. Other big plays were just mystifying........ How do you let Cajuste run down the middle of the field on that last catch? Should have treated that guy like a gunner on a punt return; line up two guys across from him and beat the living hell out of him off of the line.

4. Terry Jillery played a very good game, I thought. I think he is going to be a very sturdy anchor on the DL for the next couple of seasons. He looks like he is in elite shape. He even had that play in the 4th Q, where he looked like he was shot out of a cannon. If you look at the offense that Kelly has built, and look at the core of the defense....... once the recruiting catches up, I think future defenses will rival the 2012 one.

5. As disappointing as this loss was, let's not lose sight of the fact that this team has won 10 games. And that was a number that this board almost unanimously decreed would be a successful season, back in July and August. We're going to miss the playoffs, but will be in a New Years Day bowl game against a quality opponent. Win that game, and there will be plenty of reason for optimism heading into the Spring.

6. My game ball goes to DeShone Kizer. 13/25, 234, 1TD. 16 carries for 128 yards and 1TD.

Agree with your overall points. Add me 2 cents;
- please recruit DBs that can cover and tackle(hint: they reside in TX, LA, CA, FL)
- where oh where has our TE disappeared to? Not seen for several games, and hardly at all all season
- definitely will take 10-2, especially considering all the injuries. emergence of DK & JA bright lights for future
- disappointing that we really didn't get to Hogan with all the blitzing...had a flashback to Tenuta days
- overall decent job vs McCafferey
- looked like defensive plan was to make Hogan pass to beat us, and he did
- D really never stopped SU when they had to
- while overall good season, still apparent ND not quite at the level needed to win championships...got to strengthen the D in a big way
- hope Irish heal up and play well in bowl game to end on positive note and to slingshot for next year
- need to finish strong with recruiting, especially on defensive side
- already penciled in for next year games to attend: UT and Shamrock(Army) here in Texas, home opener vs Nevada, and probably UM & Stanford
-

The thing about the two point conversions and gambling.... I don't think 2 point conversions are very successful often. Given NDs inefficiency in the red zone it is a much larger gamble and should not have occurred that early in the Clemson or Stanford games.

He's already a dominant player. Just ask the NFL scouts and draft pundits that have him as a top 10 pick.

I would love it if he came back but I don't see it.
My damn Miami Dolphins need him because our LB's are atrocious ! With the exception of Jelani Jenkins

As do my NY Giants. Their LB corps is wholly atrocious.

What softens the blow a little bit is how hard it is to get accepted into Stanford.

3 big games with lots of time between them and some fun matchups to go along with it. Catching Miami and VT in transition, and a couple shitty teams.
We'll be fine . VT, well you never know but Miami I'm not worried at all because the BOT has ...k that program up to beyond repair.
