Schmidt has to start, regardless of his minuses. BK has said repeatedly that he is like a coach out there, getting everyone in their right position. We have no one else to quarterback the defense.

What about Jaylon? I've read that he is an absolute sponge when it comes to learning the defensive concepts. I'd still like to see Council in the middle.

Definitely seemed like the best game on special teams in the last 3 years lol. Couldnt believe it when i saw us returning punts

Exactly. I really think Booker may have saved his job with that ST performance overall plus if they can consistently be similarly as effective through the year . If it is going to be just a continuation of the past few years, he would be gone IMO.

BK mentioned Jaylon had some mental mistakes in the game. He's just an absolute athletic freak and can make up for it. Probably still too early for him, mentally.

Also don't forget Jaylon is also playing a different position so he has a lot on his plate

For those wondering why Chris Brown wasn't more involved, Coach D on ISD said he was basically doubled the entire game. They had a high safety to his side every single play. It's why Prosise, Carlisle and Fuller were 1-on-1 the whole game, and why he didn't see many looks.

Hard to imagine I get more encouraged about a player when he does nothing in a game, but that clearly insinuates that he was the player Rice was most concerned about. That's pretty awesome.

Did anyone listen to the game on the radio? What's up with Don Criqui's voice? He sounded way different, kind of like an older Casey Kasem.

There is nobody older than Casey Kasem...he defied age. But I'll tune in to hear what you are talking about.

Per BK at his presser today, lack of pass rush was part of the game plan. Wanted to contain Rice's QB and force him to pass.

He had 61 yards on the ground and we got no pressure on him. That doesn't bode well against michigan. Gardner is faster and can throw better than Driphus.

That's not saying much about Gardner because I'm not sure there are many starting QBs in FBS who cannot throw better than Driphus. Gardner must have a screwed up delivery or something because I swear as every pass leaves his hand it looks like it's headed straight for the ground and it somehow stays elevated enough to make it WRs.

Yes. I thought he was doubled as well though I could not confirm it. Lots of 1v1s out there. My homer in me still thinks this kid can blow the top off a defense.

Safety Communication

Safety Communication

In his presser today, BK said the DB problem was lack of Safety communication, not poor play. He specifically said it was not on Farley. He seemed to say that this can be corrected during the week and that Isaiah and Max will be working better together next week. He made it clear he has no plans to move either Cody Riggs Matthias to safety. Shumate is the best guy for the job; his problem was lack of reps since he only had @ 24 hours to prepare to start.

I was glad to hear all this and I also took some comfort in Kelly's explanation of the poor DL pressure.

Nevertheless, UM is a whole different kettle of s**t (seems better to describe them that way rather than use "fish") and I think we'll have a real nail-biter next week. I'd feel otherwise if KL, DD and IW were in the lineup but I don't see that at likely at this point.

KeiVarae Lussell wont be in the lineup...guaranteed.

Not sure I will ever be able to guarantee anything the rest of my life, but I feel pretty certain we would have lost that game yesterday, with Rees at quarterback.
With the same gameplan? Maybe. With that being said, the coaches would have put a completely different plan in place that would have worked to Tommy's strengths. We would have probably relied more on our running backs throughout the game, and would have been able to gain yards on the ground. The game would have slowed quite a bit, and probably looked and felt like the Temple game last year. IMO

Disagree. We would have pounded the football on the ground.

[FYI, I actually played against Jerome Heavens, in high school. Then I went to law school at Notre Dame, and saw him play his senior year. You mentioned you have been an ND fan since Jerome Heavens days.]

Remind me to never trust your feelings on these issues. Rees hate. Gotta love it.

Not sure if it was mentioned but Koyack blocked well yesterday. He wasn't killing people but he was getting down field and throwing some nice blocks. Good sign for the rest of the year.

Yes...saw that. Once, on the bubble screen he did very well. When receivers block down field with these RB's...good things will happen.

Yes, saw that one. He walled off the defender on Golson's first TD run. Had a nice block on one of GB's runs. He was active down field.

Not related to team play or anything, but to anyone who was at the game, what did you think about the new kickoff song? I like that we no longer play BC's song, but I don't know if it's quite as good of a pump up song.

To everyone who wasn't there, it is now this:

Because they ARE bigger, faster and stronger than ND. And we will experience this in mid-October. That is all I am saying.

I never said they were the best team in the country. That is what someone else said.

So why are you confused? It is a pretty simple point.

I'm confused bc someone said that an unranked team was taking it to FSU, and you said THAT was your point.

Really? Please show me where you made that point. Because all I saw was you expounding the virtues of FSU. Never once did you say OSU could hang with them.

Still waiting for you to show me where you made your point about FSU being very beatable. I'll take it your silence on the matters means that you're admitting you were full of it.

Same goes for you.

How many people do you know, who BEFORE the 93 FSU game, predicted we would beat FSU, and then lose the next week vs BC?

I know you think you are a Notre Dame football genius, but the rest of us are not quite as dumb as you may think, either.

Bravo. Not only do you have everyone on ISD hating you (your post bragging about how rich you are and that your basement is the "envy of the entire city" was a funny topic at the tailgate yesterday), you are now well on your way here as well. Bravo bro, bravo.
