So rather than put myself thru this I DVR’d the game and just found out ND lost. I didn’t want to take my blood pressure meds early and hearing how it went down it’s a good thing I passed on watching it live. I’m looking for you guys to help me out with your insights and hopefully provide a ray of hope for next year. Sounds like we were out coached especially in the second half and that the existence of Tyree on offense and Hamilton on defense would have made a difference. Fill me in and should I even watch the game. I passed on the ACC championship last year and save myself the depression and anger.

Bring on April.

What bothers me most is getting such a big lead and thinking we were finally gonna win a NY6 bowl. Gonna take a while to get over this one.

Wasn’t sure where to put this but I was impressed with how much the spread the ball around on offense. I said these a few weeks back I think you’ll see them work Chris Tyree out of the slot a lot next year depending who stays and goes. Styles has potential to put up crazy numbers next year.

It was a great season that ended in disappointing fashion.
I really wish Kyren played, but understand why he didn't. MF needs to get a real DC so he can be the CEO head coach needed at top programs. Imo, TB12 takes this team to another level next year and hopefully we are never without a mobile quarterback again.

Throwing in the flag. This one hurt a lot and it’s just not worth it any more.

The same QB that looked great in practice but got zero reps. Even BK did better than that!

I knew Sanders was going to have the game of his life b/c all we heard from the ND beat writers was how he couldn’t handle adversity & pointed to all his picks…especially in the B12 CG. I wonder if the D thought the same thing. You can’t just blitz every play and rarely get home and expect Sanders to self-implode. He simply did what he was known to do: avoid the rush and when the middle opened up like the Red Sea, run for the easy first down. Kudos to the Sanders kid…I think he set a total offense record for the Fiesta Bowl.

FIrst quarter was great. So was most of the 2nd quarter. ND blitzes were getting home enough to affect Sanders & the WR. ND contained their run game. Rees had a perfect gameplan and it worked perfectly. I can’t speak for rest of the fanbase, but my concern begin when Okla St went right down the field in their last possession of the 2nd quarter. It was too easy and gave them a ton of motivation considering they would start the 2nd half w/ the ball as well.

ND was criticized for not trying to push the ball down the field in hopes a few chunk plays could get them in FG range right before half. I was torn and realized ND was just as liable as throwing a pick six as they were making some key chunk plays so I understood the decision. But that was under the assumption that ND would make halftime adjustments and compete in the third quarter. Instead their D gave up another TD drive to begin the third quarter before the offense began a string of 3 & outs. I thought if they were ever going to introduce a package for Buchner it would be in the 3rd quarter. Instead, it was ND stubbornly doing basically the same thing that worked in the first half despite OSU defensive adjustments.

My take from listening to all the podcasts going into this game was OSU had an unintimidating offense. Good but methodical but all the ND beat writers assumed the ND defense would stifle them while the OSU defense would eliminate ND run game. Rees short passing worked great in the first half. I was hoping he’d introduce more runs in the second half but it never happened.

The OL seemed to really keep the OSU defense at bay b/c Coan had plenty of time to pass. I think he was only sacked twice but since he was no threat to run, it really became a feast or famine game plan by the second half.

ND haters will be happy tonight but they’re always going to move the goalposts to suit their hate. Time to look to the future & hope ND can convince Lenzy, Austin, Foskey, Patterson, Ademilola, Davis & WIlkins to return…or some combo of those kids returning. I think Lenzy knows he’s not ready for the NFL but is he ready for another season in South Bend? I hope so. Austin had a Jekyll & Hyde game where he flashed some elite talent but then looked to lose some one on ones due to lack of physicality. The film won’t move the needle for his NFL aspirations.

* Tale of two halves for Coan. Near perfect first half, very sloppy second half. He gets a lot of undeserved flack. He was exactly what I thought he would be coming in: a solid but unspectacular veteran stop gap QB.
* Logan Diggs played a poor game. Very disappointing.'
* Tyree played really well. He's a lethal weapon in the passing game.
* We still saw some of the usual issues with Austin but I thought this was one of his better games this year. Got open a lot and produced.
* Baffled by Lenzy this year. He was so explosive as a sophomore and he made virtually zero explosive plays in 2021. However, I thought he looked pretty solid here late in the season. I'd like to see him back in 2022.
* Lorenzo Styles was spectacular. Best game of the season by far.
* Another good day from Mayer.
* Run blocking was awful. Pass pro pretty good.
* Horrendous effort by the defense. Made a mediocre QB look like Patrick Mahomes.
* Foskey was good. One of the bright spots.
* The parade of injuries really killed us at LB this year. No depth and the guys on the field are slow and unathletic.
* Absolutely dreadful game by Clarence Lewis. One of the worst solo performances I can remember.

Honestly I think if it proved anything today, it’s that we need an actual defensive coordinator. I think Elston, while I love the guy, showed that he’s NOT the guy. Clarence Lewis was really good all year. The LBs were an issue this year, but even without KH, they were never that exposed. Our DL was mitigated in the second half. We just kept doing the same shit and expecting different results. Results were not different.

Poor Clarence Lewis. They picked on him all game & he couldn’t handle it. His head was on a swivel….not in a good way. That last 3rd & long he let get completed was coup d’etat. It was reminiscent of Gary Gray.

Second half D and second half offense should be ashamed of themselves all the way around. OK St does not have an elite offense and we made them look great. MF (and Rees) literally owe the fan base an apology. Imagine we just doubled most of their salaries and at least quadrupled Freeman’s. I cringed when someone mentioned Charlie Strongs name. This is still a thinking man’s game as HC. We know MF has the energy and attitude and can recruit but is he the entire package? Not based on that second half of no adjustments. Gundy smoked him. Hard to pick on Coan with his numbers but a loss is a loss and he lost.

Move the goalposts? It's the same one. 28 years of not winning a big bowl. Just win one. One. That's all they have to do.

Not sure I feel sorry for CL. He started the season with swagger like he was the man and has proceeded to digress from his freshman season. Hopefully his job is up for grabs and we can upgrade in 2022.

No you misunderstood. Had ND beat OKIE ST, the haters would’ve simply moved the goalposts and said OSU is a joke of an opponent. That’s all. I agree they need to finally win one, but even when they do, haters are always going to hate ND…that’s all I was saying…nothing more.

Ok then why the hell can’t one of the backups step up and take his job?! There is no waiver wire. The coaches knew what they had in the secondary all season..especially at CB. The coaches also knew they played some shitty opponents more often than not so they should’ve known that their secondary (esp CBs) were below average. They get paid for that…the players don’t If Lewis is that bad, find someone else. If there’s no one else…again that’s on the staff for piss poor recruiting. You reap what you sow.

I thought Lewis looked bad, too.

Lots of bad, here's some good:

The true freshman offensive tackles were pretty good sissy the stout defensive front. Some mistakes but overall neutralized them for most of the game.

Fisher held his own pretty well especially when you consider 1) the opponent and 2) he hasn't played in 4 months. I was impressed.

Neither side of the ball made adjustments at halftime. That's unacceptable. OSU did and that's why the won. The defense total dogshit in the second half. The offense didn't help them at all. OSU tried to give the game back to ND by coughing up the ball twice at the end and the offense couldn't even get a first down either time. A few bright spots would be Styles, Mayer, Tyree, and Foskey. Alt and Fisher too. I'd love to say Coan was a bright spot but as great as he looked in the first half he looked equally as bad in the second. We need a DC and QB coach.

Clark Lea and Todd Lyght say hello. It’s really a shame Lyght could possibly be that bad a recruiter. Almost impossible given his resume. His old teammate Dre Bly is the opposite at UNC

Getting the monkey off our back in these bowl games is the biggest positive a win would have brought. I really don’t think it’s going to mean much in recruiting because of Freeman. How next season goes will have a much bigger impact on the future of the program.
  • We have to get more athletic and better at the LB and secondary positions. That seems to be happening with recruiting.
  • QB position and WRs are the biggest concern going forward. How that gets addressed will determine next season’s successful.
  • Disappointed TB12 did not play.

Lorenzo showed up our Senior WRs as a true freshman. Those guys disappeared as usual when Ok St tightened coverage the 2nd half. That was super disappointing, we really should have quit throwing their way. I think we should have leaned more on Mayer, Styles, and Tyree. Those guys had the hot hand and were pretty good all day.
