Post Game Observations (MSU '16)

2. Sanders opening game kickoff TD return called back for a hold.
3. ND came back with long drive for 7-0 score which held through the Q.
4. ND Defense looked good early.
5. Then came the 2ND quarter. ALL Sparty.
6. Sparty scored 36 unanswered points
7. ND finally got another score in 3Q.
8. Kizer aired it out in the 4Q to get ND back in the game.
9. Sparty running game, 241 yds, ran out the clock.
10. ND had no running game, 57 yds, 2.3 yds/attempt, Adams leading rusher 123
11. ND WRs looked good, 8 different receivers, Hunter lead 5 catches/95 yds.
12. ND OLine blocked early, then struggled for 2 Qs, then turned it on again in the 4thQ.
13. Defense inconsistent, looked best in 4thQ
14. MSU had almost 16 minute advantage in T.O.P.
15. MSU ran 78 plays, 16 more than ND's 62
16. ND ran 25 times while throwing 37 times.

Really sad to see this program in this state in year 7 while OSU is steamrolling Oklahoma on the road. For the first time I am really questioning whether Kelly can get it done. This team has at least 3 more losses on the schedule. Terrible play calling,terrible fundamentals and terrible technique. At least the kids didn't quit.

Just had that "here we go feeling" when sanders houses the opening kickoff and it gets called back...almost goes away then we go three and out after a pick, force 3 and out, then let a punt hit our foot rolling around. That's when it all went to hell. Not a good loss, Texas I could handle, this...no excuses.

Can you imagine what an offense like Louisville would do to this team?? This team isn't even remotely close to a championship contention level.

We need to lower our academic standards and start oversigning if we want to seriously try and win it all. Otherwise we should all just admit that our standards are worth more than winning because that's where we're at folks.

Defense played really well when they weren't getting completely gassed on account of being on the field FOREVER.... when gassed, they were HORRID.

Offensive coaches should be absolute embarrassed and apologize to ND fans for that game plan.

That last drive... lol. Reminiscent of what we did against Texas on our last drive. Why is it that we only run good offense in "desperation mode"? Punting the ball back to MSU there was absurd... if we didn't get a 3&out, the game was over. Spoiler alert: we didn't get a 3&out.

Lastly... complexion of game changed on that opening kickoff being called back and the lack of PI calls. In a weird way I'm happy we sucked so bad that I don't feel like that cost us the game.

Per usual, Kelly plays it conservatively until we are down big. Then all of the sudden we can score and score quick.
Someone needs to spend the entire game whispering in his ear that we are down by 30. ND would put up huge numbers.

I'm with everybody else now. I have stood by Kelly through thick and thin. But, you guys are right, Kelly has platode at Notre Dame.

Could you imagine how good Notre Dame would be if they had Dantonio as a coach.

More importantly there has been terrorist attack in NYC. There is more to life then a stupid football game!

Yes. I watched a shitty offense put up 526 yards and score 36 points in essentially 3 quarters. Our offense blew as well. I'm just over having an absolutely abysmal defense. BVG's last 3+ years as a college DC is one of the worst coaching jobs in history.

All great points...It just seems like such a lack of creativity on offense and more so a stubbornness of "God damnit we're going to do what we want to do...and if it doesn't work we're going to keep trying to establish it." Only when we get in major hole does it change slightly.

I agree also on the horrid officiating, it seemed like the big ten refs were blantly holding their flags in the pocket all night...but we got our ass kicked so bad for that 36 point stretch can't really dwell on that.

Exactly. The offense was disappointing, but why do we need them to be the 2001 Rams if we want to win a game? 36 points allowed is awful against a run first team. The corners remain HORRIBLE.

Honestly I dont think this first part is true, if my eyes were correct we ran almost no true reads and instead just ran dives.

We didnt even run qb power read once and we only did a run-pass-option qb draw once.

Our run game was just vanilla, and for the life of me I don't understand why.

Again did you watch the game? Did you see the turnover on the punt? Did you see the fumble? Did you see all the 3 and outs? Our D was playing very well until the Offense/Special Teams shit the bed. Shockingly if you keep the D on the field for a long time they eventually fall apart. Horror. Could our D have played better, damn right. But this loss was on the Kelly and the play calling not on BVG no matter how much you and many others want it to be.
