Defensive backfield is pretty nasty. If we can figure out how to generate more pressure without blitzing, or actually get home when we do, our defense is going to be very good.

And that NC State defense was tough, but simply could not account for all the ways we can move the ball. Once we got a little creative with the playcalling.

AP write-up

THE TAKEAWAY

Notre Dame: This wasn’t as easy as the score indicated much of the way. But Estime’s long run along with a 65-yard catch-and-run play by Chris Tyree — whom the Wolfpack lost track of behind coverage — that led to a TD just before halftime proved critical big plays. Notre Dame finished with 456 total yards and gradually asserted control, including interceptions on consecutive possessions early in the fourth quarter in turning a one-possession game into a blowout.

My main takeaway from this game is that our offense is good enough that we can really screw up and make a lot of drive-killing mistakes and still score 40+ points on a good defense on the road in bad weather… which is crazy. We haven’t been able to do that in a long time. We generate explosive plays because we have some very talented RBs coupled with a QB that maximizes a lot of opportunities.

On defense, deepest group of DBs I can remember. The biggest question mark for me is generating pass rush from the front 4. I don’t see it, but I thought they did well as run defenders today.

And how about this new kicker? Holy shit does he have a leg!
McFerson, too. Was booming punt after punt.

Where can I get Freeman's pullover with the helmet on it. That thing looked nice.
Probably nowhere. His stuff is 🔥and UA would have all of my money if they actually started to sell the stuff he wears.

Both the floor and ceiling of this offense are so much higher because of Hartman.

Hartman’s “bad” game against a good defense is 286 yards, 62.5% comp pct, almost 12 yds/att, and 4 TD’s, with a single turnover. It’s going to be hard to beat this team if they keep putting the ball in his hands.

Yup. Why there isn't a "Marcus Freeman Collection" blows my mind. He makes everything look good and I thought UA was in the business of making money.

Overall a good game and win.

Estime is becoming one of my favorite players.
Staes getting rewarded for all his blocking.
The throw from Hartman to Greathouse was a beautiful thing.
Even the missed FG had some distance. He has a big leg.
Cross was all over the place today.
The DB’s were ready to go and did well today.
BK doesn’t win this game by that margin.

A Vet like Hartman can’t take those 2 sacks and on the one fumble.
The refs have been horrible this year.
The d line is getting some pressure but need to get some QB’s on their backs.
For the most part good play calling had a few that were head scratchers.
We still have to figure out a way to get the WR’s more involved in the offense.

I know winning college football games is hard but damn if we don’t make it harder on ourselves than it has to be.

Not a good look Nick. You played there for four years
I'm going to guess there's a reason he didn't pay 5 there though.... Maybe I'm naive but I don't think people really transfer for the unique "masters" degree.

Great adjustments on offense after some eye roll play calls trying to force the running game with multiple tight ends and stacked boxes. It is really difficult to stop this offense with Hartman at the helm, our never ending stable of quality backs, athletic tight ends and dependable wideouts.

We finally saw how valuable explosive plays are when playing a good defense and the offense can’t find a consistent rhythm. What an awesome revelation to see our playmakers excel and be athletes. This is what we see the big boys do in playoff games and man it’s so much more fun.

Still in wait and see mode with our DLine pressure, but they were AWESOME today keeping Armstrong in the pocket. His longest run was 9 yards. I do think they were intentionally engaging with the OL and primarily focused on staying in their lane to keep him in the pocket rather than generate chaos for sacks.

I personally believe Liafiu is greatly improved and really showing up all over the field. I think we’re actually seeing his true ability after recovering last year and probably being too hesitant (for good reason after your snap your leg in half).

My biggest takeaway: Freeman is excellent with end of half management. He got us the 7 points before half by being aggressive with timeouts when NC St had the ball. 3rd straight week we have scored before the half. Also, he keeps his foot on the pedal and his competitive nature permeates through the team. We turtle up and run the ball into stacked boxes once the score hits 31-17 with BK for two quarters.

Like I said pre-game, a 21 point win with some overcoming of adversity is exactly what this team needed to grow AND impress.

Not sure why Sneed isn't out there if we're going to slow blitz LBs.

Great to see Merriweather essentially catch two balls. He's gotta get going and that's a start.

I think I overrated JD and Kiser when I said they're "solid" and got heat for that.

Was hoping for more from Rylie Mills. Seems like the same old same old.

No injuries!

DBs are awesome. Mickens as our next DC would be Ok with me.

I think Parker can learn a lot from this game. Again overall great outcome/flow IMO.
I’ll bring more tomorrow but Rylie mills blew up plays all game… he was fantastic despite stats not showing it

That is good to hear. Didn't see it myself.

Is Ford injured or not ready yet?

I really wish Sneed was further along. You would want him to be better than what we have been getting from the LBs thus far (outside of Marist who has been good).

Seriously. I've watched pretty much every game since about 1987, and I can't even remember the new kickers name right now. But he has the longest FG in ND history, and almost made that 56yd kick also. lol

It was almost halfway up the upright where it hit. Schrader has a cannon for a leg.

I was happy for him and appreciate him excelling in blocking down field & being a great teammate for his fellow WR in the 1st two games.

Sucks his 2nd catch got nullified by the offensive PI.

Wasn’t Tobias a nationally recognized sprinter in HS? Still can’t believe their LB caught him from behind on that great catch & run.
Announcers mentioned shortly after that dude ran a 4.49 preseasom. Thats freakin moving and on the replay you could see he blew by his own DBs as well. Dude that caught him’s got wheels, i wouldnt feel too bad about it.

Biggest issue from the 50 was the Nickel getting picked on, on in breaking routes.

I get that we adjusted and Watts jumped 2, and DJ Brown jumped that last one perfectly (great anticipation there).

Brennan being late and throwing those kinda blind helped.

Harper felt like a liability.

I’ll need a rewatch tho.
When you rewatch you will feel differently about Harper. He played a really solid game and even most of the catches he gave up were really good coverage that took a perfect throw and/or catch for the completion. I actually came away feeling good about him being a guy thats going to get a ton of snaps for us.

In a sense this game is good practice for USC. Obviously NC State doesn't have the same caliber of receivers and Williams > Armstrong but they have similar styles. Watching USC jailsex Stanford here, any practice we can get will come in handy.

Great win on the road. Only two complaints. When they stack the box I’d like to see Parker spread out the formation then run it. I’d also like to see Golden bring a blitz from some place other than the middle.

It was a good win but the offensive and defensive lines need to be much better if we want to win the big games this season.

Nc state ran 78 plays to our 61… we did have far too many 3 and outs but hard to complain with 45 points. It was clear from first snap how agreasive nc state would be. Wish we would have countered earlier.

Our penalties also extended so many drives for them

-Frustrating, sloppy, unique game. NC State came out extremely fired up and intense. They were bringing everything but the kitchen sink at Hartman. ND appears to finally be settling in and working their offense and then you get a weather delay.

-ND had trouble putting this one away early. It’s like their offense and defense could never sync up at certain points. At various parts throughout the game, I thought they could really get another score or make a key stop and really put NC State out to pasture; however, NC State would get a stop/turnover and/or score a touchdown. Until the 4th, NC State was just hangin’ around.

-The best part about ND’s offense is just how many players they can distribute the ball to. GP should force opponent’s to defend the entire field. There are so many weapons out there.

-Maybe some of you more in the know can chime in on the offensive line? Is it a cause for concern? Was NC State bringing some unique blitz scheme or were they simply bringing more than ND could block?

-Defense played well. My real complaint was just the penalties. Some were the products of poor officiating and some were legitimate. Liufau is a fun watch. He plays fast, agile and hard. Don’t get me wrong, he keeps you on the edge of your seat (not in a good way), but he really has that old school linebacker mentality. I’m not going to expound more, but Bertrand and Kiser worry me against the “Big 3” opponents ND will face. I’d like to see more pressure generated on the QB by the defensive line, but they’re good and bottling things up — especially in the run game.

-Special teams/Shrader were great.

-All in all, I don’t think ND play its best game. Not even close. They played on the road and against a respectable, formidable opponent in a wet, sloppy, disjointed game filled with penalties and mistakes —and you still won by 3 touchdowns. In short, this has the potential to be a special team. There isn’t a team on the schedule they can’t beat…Go Irish 🍀

They better find a pass rush.
They were in State’s backfield the entire game.
Armstrong was running for his life, getting pressured, throwing it away or throwing picks.
I would rather have 3 INTS (should have been 5), because of pressure, than 3 sacks.
ND had 11 QB pressure, 3 INTs & a sack.
While only giving up 84 rush yards on 30 attempts. That’s winning defense in today’s scoring college football.
