Here’s another way I will look at this:

how many of our opponents will go to a bowl this year?

- FSU likely
- Toledo
- Cincy
- Wisconsin
- Purdue
- Virginia
- UNC
- maybe USC if they beat BYU
- VT needs one more win.

If USC and VT get in then that 9 of our 12 opponents will be in various bowl game. Will probably turn out to be 8 out of 12 but that is a decent number.

When ND scheduled these teams years ahead they didn’t think that teams like FSU, USC, UNC and VT would Schitt the bed so badly therefore ruining our SOS. All of those teams have the ability to step up any given week when properly coached and motivated to beat a lot of different teams. The talent is there. In addition I would hope that the committee would weigh in on how most teams circle the ND game as one of if not the biggest game in their schedule that season. Add to that the unusual circumstance is so many of our opponents having a bye week prior to their game with us and you increase our weekly game day challenge. I would think Ty Willingham might point that out while others Pooh Pooh it.

just looking for some angles to help make our point to get in over a weak ass Big 12 champ.

I will say this; I didn’t think when I started this thread we would get near a 1000 posts. We win big this week and we will blow by that number.

I agree with all you said. And I guarantee the committee won’t give one damn about 7 teams on bye before playing us. Should it be a factor? Yes but will the committee recognize it or acknowledge it? Def not. They will do whatever they want and put in whoever they want. Hopefully we end up being one of those

Agree?

You can't play 13 games unless you play @ Hawaii at some point during the season. This has been brought up before.

Can we see if BYU wants an extra paycheck? Of course that could be risky (sort of) not sure if there is a way where something like that could actually happen. If it could and ND said let’s do it that would show some real balls but it sure as F better mean we would be in ahead of any Big 12 one loss team.

we just need a few cards to fall our way. We will be talking about this for at least two more weeks.

Not real sure what playing BYU does. Take care of Stanford and let the stars align.

It would be interesting if we came to some sort of agreement with an independent like BYU to play on the CCG week. Not add any more games just start a week later or add a bye week in season somewhere.

I have been thinking this exact same thing the past few weeks. Something like an "Independent Invitational," sort of a de facto independent championship. I poo-pooed it in my own mind, thinking for sure that Swarbrick and ND have thought of it before. But it sure would make sense, because for one reason or another it's impossible to convince ESPN that there is no 13th data point when you schedule a game against an FCS team.

Otherwise, have to agree with the others saying it's playoff or bust. Outside of the extra practices, bowl games outside of the top 4 are meaningless in this era. Absolutely meaningless. Win or lose, there is no benefit even to the perception of the program. And I think that's true from without and within: nobody in the media is going to care about a bowl game result in 2022. You weren't a playoff team, that's all that matters. There won't be a recruiting bump and the players and coaches aren't going to gain a thing from a bowl game that they wouldn't from a playoff game.

In a playoff game, you get that crucial experience--you get your players more and more used to the big, big stage. You get your coaches accustomed to preparing the team for the limelight. Every time you make it in, you gain something invaluable that can't be replicated even in a NY6 game. Why doesn't a NY6 game do the same thing for you? Because nobody cares anymore. The playoffs have destroyed the importance of the bowl system. Win? It doesn't matter. Lose? It was only a bowl game. You can't tell recruits that you've made the playoffs 3 of the last 4 years. You can't tell them that they're the last piece of the puzzle we need to get to the top.

You could tell them we won a game against a generational Wake Forest team, but nobody is going to care. ND is showing now the type of impact reaching the playoffs can have on recruiting. There is no benefit from beating a Pitt or some other 2nd- or 3rd-tier team. We beat those teams weekly now. We need to keep on beating on the door. Eventually we'll break through. With Alabama and Clemson at their weakest in a good while, it's not impossible even this year.

So instead of playing Navy in Ireland, play Hawaii. Would be great for recruiting in the area as well. Either first or last game. Understand that Capt. Jack is probably looking at all options. BUT, a 12 team playoff essentially ensures the current state of ND would be in every year.

One thing the NY6 game will provide is an opportunity to erase this "ND has not won a major bowl since 1994" nonsense. The critics seem to have adopted a sliding scale re the defintion of "major" to suit their needs but they won't be able to do this with the Fiesta or Peach.

And it would appear that Cincy in the playoffs means Fiesta as they get to pick first and will probably pick ND. Opponent would be the #3 Big Ten team so watch that MSU/PSU game this week for our probable opponent.

A "major" bowl with ND as favorite. That hasn't happened since 1994 either.

But there aren’t any “major” bowls anymore. It’s playoffs and then just games with bowl names in front of it. I could care less about our major bowl losing streak. It doesn’t matter anymore. Getting to the playoffs and having a chance(any chance) is better than a bowl that could be riddled with opt outs

Totally agree. Beating Pitt in the peach bowl isn't going to squash that narrative. A tight loss v Georgia would probably go further from that perspective

Really starting to hope we make it now and make some noise.

If we don't, I'll be pulling for the Buckeyes.

Never understood the hatred for Ohio State on here. We hardly ever play them. They hate Michigan more than we do. They stomp Michigan on a regular basis. They are a midwest team with midwest winters and are the only school in the north that can beat the southern schools.

Unless it's jealousy. But we shouldn't be jealous. We should aspire to have a team like them.

I always knew you should have been banned.

Your awful takes are pervasive on this board, but this one is especially awful.

Take a lap.

I'm sorry that my pulling for a midwest team(in the absence of ND)against the SEC stranglehold on CFB triggers you. Sorry. I refuse to pull for Alabama, Georgia, LSU, etc.

ill pull for the midwest team that plays weather games and actually plays a real non conference schedule. Ohio State isn't even a rival of ND.

It’s not jealousy. And I strongly disagree about having aspirations to “have a team like them.” All scandals aside (which is just a click away in terms of research), meet your average fan from OSU and the repulsion is pretty automatic. I can’t speak for every OSU fan, but the ones I have met have a level of conceit that is unparalleled (save Michigan) and their instance on calling their university Thee Ohio State is some next level shit I’d rather not engage. They also hate Notre Dame. Again, I am generalizing, but not exaggerating my personal experience with their fans.

So yea, no.
