@BryanDFischer: NCAA says permission-to-contact rules will be suspended, open season on current PSU players.

@PeteThamelNYT: I asked if NCAA sanctioned schools like OSU and USC can go over scholarship limit to take PSU transfers. NCAA hasn't worked that out yet.

Seriously wonder who BK will be targeting. Any DBs on their roster who have experience that are worth it?

Came across this on Twitter...

Joe Paterno's last official win now Nov. 1997 vs. Wisc. His starting QB? Mike McQueary.

This is really a sad day for college football! Not saying PSU didnt desearve it but for the sport, this sucks...

On another not can we note act like vultures with their recrutis and former players? Sh!t the body is still warm lets all come down on who we can attempt to snag. Imagine these poor kids that have their lives before em disrupted like this!

Second part is somewhat true, but unfortunately the first vultures to the carcass get the best parts, and you can guarantee that the coaching staffs of a multitude of programs will NOT be observing a moment of silence for PSU. So, while internet posters could put a moratorium on speculating who ND could go after, I hope that the ND coaching staff is already discussing (or has discussed) who they have interest in.

The players have a Get Out of Jail Free card, so many will land fine and probably would prefer to move quickly, rather than wait this out. Those who wait may find the list of suitors drastically reduced; especially if the NCAA does not allow signing teams to exceed the 85 limit.

I agree but as a fan base we can try to sound a lil less like O$U fans.

Forgive me for possibly asking a dumb question...

Let's say ND gets one of their current players to transfer. What University pays for his scholarship?

My thought would be the school the player attends would "pay" the scholarship, but the schools that accept them will be allowed to go over their limit.....just me guessing though.

Pretty certain that BobD is right. New school's have always paid.

According to the SEC's site, Mike Slive's rule for transfers within that conference is the following :):
-'New' school pays for the scholarship
-'Old' school's boosters are still on the hook for any 'disallowed' cash payments, cars, hookers, or other bling

You have to figure not many seniors will transfer because of the academic portion. Don't most institutions require the last two years of credits from their university to earn a degree? I am pretty sure that is how it is at ND.

Some reporters are saying probably few transfer before the upcoming season because of the season starting in over a month. After the season will be a different story.

So as a fan, you want your coach in there first, trying to secure the best recruits, but you just don't want fans to speculate on who the coaches should go after? Serious question to understand your point

It's weird to say, but I'm almost proud of the NCAA today. They did the right thing. They put their foot down, asserted control, and sent the message that football should not dominate over a university. Less emphasis on power and money and coercion of the football program, and acts like this will not stand. Message sent to the rest of the teams in Division 1 - time to reassess where your program stands. There must be balance.

At the end of the day, the football program should be a representative of the university. It shouldn't BE the university.

Yeah I agree with this. I'm thinking it will be incoming class and underclassmen that leave. Not only will they be less impacted academically, but arguably have less connection in many respects to the university than those who've been there for 3-4 years.

This is probably a pretty accurate statement, being that most schools only allow a certain number of credit hours to transfer. Those that are freshman and sophomores will most likely be feeling pressure from the older group to stay as well. Regardless, I have a feeling that there will be multiple transfers once it is all said and done.

I guess so because its not even 3 hrs old and many are acting like OSU fans, not recognizing the impact on college football as one of the prominant University is pretty much hobbled for many years to come....its a sad day.

Some of the PSU boards I looked at are downright appalling. Delusional, disgusting, and pathetic.

Anytime you can whine and complain about getting punished for heinous sex crimes and a complete disregard for academic integrity, you gotta do it right? Way to make your school look even worse.

Guys i dont think we fully realize how incredible this news is. We will look back on a see this was the day penn state died as a program and possibly as a university. With that being said i would be shocked if we didnt pull any players away from their current batch of players and also some of their recruits.

To be honest this is a really sad day for not only penn state but every university in america. We just have to remember that in all reality Penn State isnt the victim in this situation its the children that sack of **** sandusky took advantage of

Agree that it is sad that it has come to this; but this day was sealed by the PSU administration and head football coach. I had previously respected PSU as a football program.

Here was Dave Joyner's (new AD) press release about the sanctions. I must say that I am encouraged by the fact that he led with contrition and respect to the REAL victims (who aren't the current football team):

The Freeh Report concluded that individuals at Penn State University entrusted to positions of authority, shunned their basic responsibility to protect children, and innocent children suffered as a result. Our hearts go out to the victims of this abuse and their families.

Today Penn State takes another step forward in changing the culture at the institution as we accept the penalties of the NCAA for the failure of leadership that occurred on our campus. We are deeply disappointed that some of our leaders could have turned a blind eye to such abuse, and agree that the culture at Penn State must change. As we move forward, today's student athletes have a challenging road ahead. But they will do the right thing, as they have always done. I am confident all of our head coaches will come together to make the change necessary to drive our university forward. Penn State will continue to fully support its established athletic programs, which provide opportunities for over 800 student athletes.

Working together, the path ahead will not be easy. But it is necessary, just, and will bring a better future. Our faculty, staff, students, athletes, and parents will work together as Penn State begins this new chapter. Though this cooperation and collaboration, Penn State will become a national model for compliance, ethics, and embodiment of the student athlete credo.

Hits keep coming: Big Ten says Penn State won't be eligible to receive its share of BigTen bowl revenues over 4-yr bowl ban.
