Brett and Kate McKay, who run the blog The Art of Manliness, recently published an article titled The 3 Keys to Balancing Safety and Risk in Raising Your Kids. I'm strongly adverse to "helicopter parenting", but my wife and mother-in-law (who lives with us) are paranoid, so I frequently get overruled when trying to encourage independence in my kids. I assume other dads here have had similar experiences, so this article might help you argue more persuasively for a "free-range" approach to parenting.

I have a difficult time not helicopter parenting. I don't know what it is but I have to remind myself to step back and let the kids explore.

My wife and I are expecting our first in September and I truly couldn't be any happier. But I will admit, the waiting for the little man to arrive is making me anxious as hell.

Congrats, man.

Expecting my first any day now and I can't wait to meet him.
