we still have Tuitt, the Atkinson's, Daniels, Hagerty, Koyack, and Hardy who are all elite talents. We have real shots at Ishaq, Scarlet, Niklas, and Huggins

i think when we lose a kid but it isnt over til February

Sure you can develop a three star into an elite talent, but it's a lot easier to develop a five star into an elite talent. Saying otherwise is just ridiculous.

Trying to be optimistic is one thing, but sticking your head in the sand is not helpful. This is not a good situation.

There are an average of maybe 50 5 stars kids a year, and I don't have the exact number but their are 120 DI schools and on an average 25 shollys given out, so lets say 3000 kids sign a LOI a year.

the 50 kids have raw talent and some may have topped out.

The kids that aren't 5 stars, most of the time are subject to poor highschool coaching because in alot of states, the coaches are just volunteers and do it for fun. So alot of the 3/4 star kids have more potential than a 5 star because most 5 stars are in the "factory" type high schol to produce the college athlete. where as the other 90 percent of high school players are just coached by the guy who owns the local store.

AHHH the soap opera that we love to hate....college recruiting! I tell myself every year that I'm not going to pay that much attention to recruiting until mid Jan. and every year I get sucked in to all the early commits/de-commits.

It's a conspiracy, all the recruits banded together and they will all decommit one after the other to drop ND into the doldrums of college football.

Maybe that was just the nightmare I had.

I love recruiting to see the kids that come and go and its like a rollercoaster. Nothing wrong with a ride of emotion, it's nice to imagine the possibilities on the field but better to enjoy the actual product on the field.

The train is loading up and is about to take off but their are only a certain amount of seats. First come first serve.

ALL ABOARD!!!!

I think our recruiting class is loudly coming together more than quietly falling apart. All the rah rah guys are gone, what's left are the guys who actually want to come to ND. We've still got a bunch of solid players in there, and as others have pointed out, there should still be more coming.

A+

I'll always take the guy that walks the walk over the guy that talks the talk (FYI, I believe in Kyle B).

kelly will get the kids that want to be here, period, and he'll win with those kids. the guy can coach football.
This makes sense to me, I'm with you tko he's a real good coach and Notre Dame is not going to get many 'football player only guys' anymore. He'll win his share with college guys who are above average talent wise and coach them up. Its probably a good thing as many people want Notre Dame to win games but stay above the norm on education. I'm on record as saying the standards need tweaking but accept that they wont change. So here's too keeping the tradition in the classroom and doing the best you can on the field. My expectations are not what they used to be. I'll still watch 'em and hurt when they get pounded by a football first school but there will be no more crying 'why cant Notre Dame get back to where they need to be' from me. Those questions have been answered.

This happens every year, and we get kids to come to ND that decommit every year also......why does everyone act like it's something new?

One other way of looking at things [you will choose whether this is sensible for you or not]: a football team has 22 starters, which they'd like to be real good. And a couple of specialist kickers. It's nice to also have depth, but at least you want these 24 guys, backed up by "24+" decent players. Each class would mathematically have to contribute about twelve such talents. Because it's asking too much for the freshman class to contribute their share of twelve right off the bat, maybe the upperclasses need to be contributing about 15 starters or second teamers each. So, if we think that we're going to get about 15 commitments in a given year that the staff can work into starting or second team roles over time, we are not in catastrophic situations. Even with the current shakiness in certain areas of the hoped-for commits, I still count around that many pretty good looking talents on board.

This is true without considering that a). the recruiting "game" is hardly over for Staff Kelly as far as new signees are concerned, which if anyone is honest in their assessment of history, will likely bear much more fruit by NSD; b). we might well get "other guys" commits to "turn" in time, so this thing is no one way street; c). the "game" is not obviously "over" with some of the de-commits now happening; d). we would be dishonest to believe that Staff Kelly can't coach up "lesser star" players to big time production [Virginia Tech sure as H*** does, and Kelly already has done so].

So, yeh, be disappointed, but please don't overdue it. It's really not worth reading some of the screaming of Doom. I originally came to this site because it was fun to get all the recruiting news. Decommits aren't fun, I agree, but reading hysteria is WAY less fun, especially when it is well beyond the actual impact on the team and our coaches.

When you look at who we've lost, it's both dire and not-so-dire depending on what happens with other recruits:

Justice: this is a big deal if we don't get Savon. If we do get Savon it's only a big deal if Cierre gets hurt or we don't grab a good back next year.

Lynch: Not a big deal if we get Ishaq and keep Tuitt. If we end up with neither of them then this was a big loss.

Prestwood: I could care less. Seriously.

In the end, no reason to panic, let's see how things turn out on NSD.

So Councell is going to leave automatically if he gets OSU offer? Or has he already left? I'm very confused.

Do we offer McDaniel and keep him at RB instead of switching him to the slot?
